00:00In Formula One, there are accidents that seem impossible to survive.
00:05Cars flying through the air, single-seaters ending up flipped over,
00:09crashes where the car is completely destroyed, and...
00:13Even so, many times the driver walks away as if nothing had happened.
00:18However, the opposite case also exists.
00:22Accidents that don't seem that terrifying but end in the worst possible way.
00:27And then there are the accidents that fall right in the middle.
00:32The ones that don't end in death, but aren't just a simple scare either.
00:37The ones that leave drivers unconscious, with broken bones, burns, skull fractures, comas,
00:43and accidents that change lives forever in a matter of seconds.
00:48Because in Formula One, surviving doesn't always mean coming out unscathed.
00:52That's why today we're not gonna talk about fatal accidents.
00:57We're going to talk about brutal injuries, chilling crashes,
01:00and drivers who managed to survive but were marked forever.
01:04Because in these cases, making it out alive wasn't the end of the story, but just the beginning.
01:11These are the 15 most brutal injuries in the history of Formula One.
01:20Sergio Perez suffered the most serious injury of his career during the 2011 Monaco Grand Prix.
01:27On the Monte Carlo Street circuit, during qualifying, the Mexican was competing in just his first season in Formula One
01:34with Sauber.
01:35Perez was on a fast lap when, coming out of the tunnel, and approaching the chicane,
01:41he slightly brushed the wall, lost control of the car, and that happened.
01:50The Sauber crashed head-on into the barriers at high speed.
01:56After the first hit, the car bounced violently against the barriers and ended up crashing sideways into the inside wall
02:03of the chicane.
02:04Perez was left stunned inside the single-seater and had to be assisted by the doctors,
02:09who removed him from the car on a stretcher before taking him to the hospital.
02:13Later, tests confirmed that he had suffered a concussion and a hematoma mistype.
02:19These injuries not only left him out of the Monaco Grand Prix, but also the next race in Canada.
02:26Unfortunately, that wasn't the only major accident that weekend,
02:29because the next day, another driver would also end up crashing into the barriers in the principality.
02:40Vitaly Petrov experienced the most worrying moment of his career during the 2011 Monaco Grand Prix.
02:47In the final laps of the race, while several cars were fighting for position,
02:52there was contact that left Petrov with very little room to react.
03:02The Renault ended up against the barriers, right in the swimming pool section,
03:07and although the impact didn't seem that violent,
03:09it was serious enough to leave the driver trapped inside the car while the medics arrived at the scene.
03:16Petrov was conscious, but for several minutes there was real concern,
03:21because after the crash, the Russian driver couldn't feel his legs.
03:27Finally, he was removed from the car and taken to the hospital for medical checks.
03:32Luckily, the accident didn't end with a permanent injury,
03:36but during those minutes, the scene was terrifying.
03:39A trapped driver, a race stop,
03:42and the uncertainty of not knowing if he would really be able to walk out.
03:51Not all brutal injuries in Formula 1 happen at over 250 kilometers per hour.
03:58Sometimes, danger appears in an area where everything seems to be under control.
04:02In the pits.
04:04During the 2018 Bahrain Grand Prix,
04:07Kimi Räikkönen came into the pits for a stop.
04:10But while the team was trying to change the tires,
04:13something went terribly wrong.
04:14One of the mechanics, Francesco Siggarini,
04:18was still working on the left rear wheel when Räikkönen got the signal to leave.
04:22And then...
04:24This happened.
04:25Well, let's see if they're going to leave.
04:27Hey, he's run over a mechanic!

04:30The Ferrari took off while Siggarini was still in front of the wheel.

05:09the Sauber driver was battling for position with Jarnotrolli
05:12when he touched the rear of his Toyota.
05:14The car lost control, lifted slightly off the ground, and this happened.

05:24Kubica has suffered a brutal crash.

05:28We saw how his head moved in that brutal impact.
05:31Kubica crashed violently into the wall.
05:34The car bounced, crossed the track completely destroyed,
05:38and ended up spinning until it stopped against the barrier on the other side.

06:34Gerhard Berger experienced the most terrifying accident of his career
06:38during the 1989 San Marino Grand Prix.
06:42In the opening laps of the race,
06:44Gerhard Berger was coming at high speed in his Ferrari
06:46when he suffered a mechanical failure that left him out of control.
06:50The car went straight into the wall,
06:52and this happened.
07:05The Ferrari crashed violently into the barriers,
07:08and almost immediately was engulfed in flames.
07:13For several seconds,
07:14Gerhard Berger was trapped inside the car
07:17while the marshals ran toward the fire
07:19to put it out as quickly as possible.
07:22Luckily, they managed to get him out alive,
07:24but unfortunately,
07:26he did not come out unscathed.
07:29Gerhard Berger suffered burns on his hands,
07:31rib injuries,
07:32and was knocked unconscious by the impact.
07:34The accident caused him to miss the next race in Monaco,
07:38and it left behind one of the most powerful images
07:40ever seen on the Italian circuit.
07:47Michael Schumacher suffered the most critical injury of his career
07:51during the 1999 British Grand Prix.
07:55On the first lap of the race,
07:57the German came into Stowe Corner,
07:59but when he tried to brake,
08:01the car didn't respond.
08:02And then,
08:03this happened.
08:11The Ferrari went straight on
08:13and crashed head-on into the tyre barriers.
08:17And although at first the impact didn't look that terrifying,
08:20the result was much more serious than it initially seemed.
08:24Schumacher suffered a fracture in his right leg,
08:27an injury that kept him out for several Grands Prix.
08:30And with that,
08:32he also said goodbye to the fight for the Drivers' Championship,
08:35and Ferrari had to continue the season without their main driver.
08:38He finally returned after missing six straight races
08:42at the Malaysian Grand Prix,
08:43where he took pole position and finished second.
08:46But by then,
08:47the accident had already completely changed his season.
08:51And although that comeback was spectacular,
08:54later on we'll see another driver,
08:56who also managed to return.
08:57But after surviving a much worse accident,
09:05Olivier Panis suffered a life-changing injury
09:09during the 1997 Canadian Grand Prix.
09:13In the final laps of the race,
09:15the Frenchman was fighting to secure another great result with Prost
09:19in a season where he had become one of the surprises of the championship.
09:22But as he went through a fast section of circuit GL Villeneuve,
09:25he lost control of the car,
09:28and then this happened.
09:36Panis went straight into the barriers,
09:38hit the tire wall violently,
09:40and the front part of the car was destroyed.
09:44Immediately,
09:44the doctors arrived and noticed that this was not just any crash.
09:49Panis suffered fractures in both legs,
09:51a brutal injury that left him out for several Grand Prix.
09:55And the crash came at the worst possible moment.
09:59Because up until then,
10:01Panis' career was on the rise and showed a lot of promise,

10:18Luciano Burti suffered an accident that ended his career during the 2001 Belgian Grand Prix.
10:24At Spa-Francorchamps,
10:26he was fighting for position with the Dierwijn,
10:28when upon reaching Blanchimont,
10:30the two cars made contact.
10:32Burti's car lost its front wing,
10:35became almost uncontrollable,
10:37and this happened.
10:45The car went straight into the barriers and ended up buried among the tires.
10:49The impact was terrifying.
10:52For several seconds, doctors and marshals worked around the car while Burti remained
10:58inside.
11:00Finally, he was removed from the car and taken to the hospital, where he was diagnosed with
11:05a severe concussion, head injuries, and facial injuries.
11:09And because of that, Burti didn't race again for the rest of the season.
11:14In fact, that accident practically marked the end of his career in Formula 1.
11:23Filipe Massa suffered one of the strangest and most dangerous accidents in Formula 1 at
11:29the 2009 Hungarian Grand Prix.
11:31During qualifying, Massa was coming at high speed in his Ferrari, when a spring that had
11:36come loose from Rubens Barrichello's car flew toward his helmet.
11:40The impact left him unconscious.
11:43And then this happened.
11:51The Ferrari kept going out of control and ended up crashing hard into the tire barriers.
11:57The impact against the wall was very strong, but the most serious damage had happened seconds
12:03earlier, because the worst blow had been the spring hitting his head.
12:07After the accident, Massa was taken to the hospital, where it was confirmed that he had
12:12suffered a skull fracture and injuries near his left eye.
12:15The injury was so serious that he had to undergo emergency surgery and was out for the rest of
12:20the 2009 season, and although he returned to compete the following year, that spring was
12:26just inches away from changing his life forever.
12:33Rubens Barrichello suffered an accident that nearly cost him his life during the 1994 San Marino
12:40Grand Prix.
12:43During Friday's qualifying, Barrichello lost control while going through a fast section
12:47of the circuit.
12:48The car hit the curb, flew through the air, and this happened.
12:57The Jordan crashed violently into the tire barrier and ended up overturned.
13:02Barrichello was left unconscious inside the car, while the doctors quickly arrived at the
13:07scene of the crash.
13:09However, the situation was even more serious than it seemed.
13:12Years later, the Brazilian said that he swallowed his tongue and stopped breathing for a few
13:17minutes.
13:19It was Sid Watkins, the Formula One doctor, who managed to clear his airways and save his
13:25life.
13:25After that, Barrichello was removed from the car and taken to the medical center.
13:30There, the magnitude of the impact was confirmed.
13:33He had a fractured nose, cuts in his mouth, bruised ribs, and a temporary loss of memory.
13:40Fortunately, he managed to recover, but he couldn't take part in the race on Sunday.
13:46A race that would end up becoming one of the most tragic days in the history of Formula One.
13:53However, just two weeks later, another driver would be involved in a crash that wouldn't
13:59end with a broken nose, but with something much worse.
14:12Carl Wendlinger suffered a very serious accident that left him in a coma at the 1994 Monaco Grand
14:19Prix.
14:20During the first free practice, Wendlinger was driving his Sauber through the chicane, one
14:25of the fastest parts of the circuit.
14:28When he reached the braking zone, he lost control.
14:31And this happened.
14:36The car went straight into the barriers and hit the wall sideways.
14:41At first glance, it didn't seem like a serious accident.
14:45However, the result was very severe.
14:47Wendlinger suffered a severe head injury and had to be taken immediately to the hospital,
14:53where he fell into a coma.
14:55Finally, after 19 days, he managed to wake up.
14:59But although he survived, the accident completely changed his career.
15:04Wendlinger did not race in Formula One for the rest of the season, and although he returned
15:09the following year, he was never the same again.
15:16Mikhail Hakkinen suffered an accident that almost cost him his life at the 1995 Australian Grand
15:23Grand Prix.
15:24During qualifying, De Fin was driving his McLaren when he suffered a puncture in one of the
15:29fastest sections of the circuit.
15:31The car lost control, went straight into the barriers, and this happened.
15:40The impact was brutal.
15:42The car crashed hard against the tyre wall and came to a stop in the runoff area.
15:48However, it quickly became clear that this was not a normal accident.
15:53Hakkinen remained motionless inside the car while the doctors arrived and began to treat
15:57him.
15:58The driver had suffered a severe head injury and a skull fracture.
16:02His condition was so critical that the doctors had to perform an emergency tracheotomy to allow
16:08him to breathe.
16:09After being stabilized, he was transferred to the hospital in critical condition, where
16:14he remained in a very serious condition for several days.
16:18Fortunately, Hakkinen survived once again and months later returned to compete in Formula
16:23One.
16:24But that accident came very close to forever changing the story of a driver who, years later,
16:30would end up becoming a world champion.
16:37Romain Grosjean suffered an accident that ended his Formula One career during the 2020 Bahrain
16:44Grand Prix.
16:44Grosjean was in the middle of the pack when he made contact with Daniel KBY X Alpha Thorey.
16:50The Haas lost control, went straight into the barriers, and this happened.
17:02The impact was terrifying.
17:05The car went through the guardrail, split in two, and was engulfed in a huge ball of fire.
17:12For 28 seconds, Grosjean was trapped inside the car, surrounded by flames, while the medical
17:18car arrived at the scene.
17:19He finally managed to get out and jump over the barrier, but although he survived, he did
17:26not come out unscathed.
17:28Grosjean suffered burns on his hands and other parts of his body from the time he was trapped
17:33in the fire.
17:34The halo, the fireproof suit, and the quick response of the doctors saved his life.
17:39However, that accident marked the end of his career in Formula One, and although his injuries
17:44were much less severe than they could have been, the next two cases were not so long.
17:50Because here, we are not just talking about burns on the hands, but about drivers who were
17:56marked forever.
18:02Niki Lauda suffered one of the most chilling accidents in the history of Formula One during
18:07the 1976 German Grand Prix.
18:09Lauda was the reigning champion and leader of the championship.
18:13But before the race, he had already warned that racing at NĂĽrburgring under those conditions
18:18was too dangerous.
18:20Even so, the race went on.
18:23In the opening laps, Lauda's Ferrari lost control, crashed into the barriers, bounced back onto
18:29the track, and then it happened to...
18:40The Ferrari was left broadside in the middle of the track, and seconds later, it was hit
18:46by other cars.
18:47But the worst came immediately after.
18:50The car began to catch fire with Lauda trapped inside.
18:53For almost a minute, he was surrounded by flames and exposed to toxic smoke, while other drivers
18:59and marshals tried to get him out of the car.
19:02They finally managed to rescue him alive, but the consequences were terrible.
19:07Lauda suffered severe burns on his face and head.
19:10Lauda also had lung injuries from inhaling toxic gases.
19:14His condition was so critical that he even received the last rites at the hospital.
