Ten years ago, Beholder put the final flourish on a Hall of Fame career when she famously defeated Songbird in the 2016 Breeders' Cup Distaff. Today, the Hall of Famer is the queen of Spendthrift Farm, where she is the dam of eight foals and has become a barn favorite amongst her caretakers.

00:00Beholder and Garrett Gomez!
00:01A lot of times I'm holding her or doing something and I brag.
00:05I say, look at me, I'm holding the best mare ever.
00:07So I do brag about it.
00:10And Beholder and Garrett Gomez have won the greatest cup.
00:22Beholder was probably a really good racehorse because of her intellect.
00:28She obviously has a lot of guts too, and she will.
00:33She won't back down here on the farm when she has something that she wants to do.
00:39She doesn't back down.
00:40I mean, one race each has gobbled up the horses and beat them really easy.
00:45I mean, she just looks like she was exercising.
00:48Beholder and the comeback kid, Gary Stevens, have won the Breeders' Cup Vistas with authority!
00:55My most favorite was the Pacific Classic win in 2015, that she just blew that race away.
01:03When she beat Songbird in the distaff, that was a pretty great race too.
01:09Songbird! Beholder! They are nose to nose!
01:12This race living up to its expected power as they come to the mire!
01:17Their nose is apart! It's Beholder!
01:20I think she got her head down on the mire!
01:22After she won her last Breeders' Cup race and she came here, I remember being very nervous
01:29because she was a big, big deal.
01:32And we wanted everything to be perfect.
01:35We had people here filming her, but she handled it really well.
01:39And I remember feeding her a carrot and just imagining, you know, what it was going to be like to
01:45take care of her.
01:47I started working here about seven years ago, and kind of the first things I wanted to go do is
01:52go out and see her.
01:53She owns this farm.
01:56She's definitely a diva. She is not the most cuddly horse. She's fine with people.
02:03And she likes attention to a point, especially when treats are involved.
02:08She's very good at staring down the aisle way one way and staring down the aisle way another way, posing.
02:14Kind of working the crowd that way, but once she knows that the treats are not there anymore,
02:19she's happy to go back into her stall and kind of ignore people.
02:23She knows her situation. We try not to change it at all.
02:26We can do everything we want with her, but if she doesn't like something,
02:30we've got to find another way, a better way.
02:33You know, she's a good mother. She raises these foals pretty well.
02:38She meant a lot to Mr. Hughes and to now to Tammy and Eric.
02:43So much that they named one of her fillies after Tammy, Tamara,
02:49and she became a pretty good racehorse herself.
02:52When a lot of people say, I work at Spindorf and I do this and that,
02:55and they ask me, do you know this mare?
02:57And I go, yeah, behold, yeah. I work with her every day and it feels good to talk about it.
03:01I still do think about her as being special.
03:05It's a little humbling sometimes.
03:08It doesn't feel like I should be managing a horse that great,
03:15but it gives me some pride to think about that.
