00:06Heading off on holiday, empty cities can be a prime target for burglars.
00:11That's why police forces across Europe are urging residents to take
00:15extra precautions to protect their homes from break-ins and intruders.
00:20In 2024, Eurostat recorded around 1.2 million such offences across the EU.
00:27But there's some good news. Compared with a decade earlier,
00:31the number of burglaries has fallen by 35% across the block.
00:36These figures cover both residential and business premises.
00:40The steepest decline was recorded in Lithuania, where the rate of burglaries per 100,000 residents
00:47dropped by 79%, followed by Bulgaria with a 78% drop, and Greece, where burglaries were down 71%
00:56compared to its peak in 2015. The picture is less optimistic in Spain.
01:02The country saw the smallest fall in burglaries, only 21% down since 2014.
01:09France is only slightly better, with a decrease of 23%.
01:14It's also the country most affected by burglaries in general, totaling more than 300,000,
01:20closely followed by Germany. But the highest rate per 100,000 residents belongs to Austria,
01:27with 700 burglaries.
