00:09What a beautiful afternoon to you guys, thanks for watching again.
00:13The third sport edition of African Cup of Nations came to a glorious close on Sunday
00:18with the Hoaxed, Ivory Coaxed emerging African champions for a tall 10 and the Super Eagles
00:23of Nigeria finishing runners-up. The Super Eagles were favourites from the start of the campaign,
00:28not losing any of their matches till the final day of the tournament.
00:32In these videos, City Sports take a look at how the Nigerian national team, the silver medal glorious
00:37run from the start of the tournament till the end and we title it Super Eagles Journey to Silver Medal
00:44Glory.
00:45The Super Eagles started the 34th edition of African Cup of Nations on a shaky note,
00:50coming back from a goal down to force a 1-1 draw against Equitaria Guinea.
00:53In a match which the Super Eagles dominated, having 17 shots at goal and 7 on target,
00:59it was Equitaria Guinea that drew the first blood in the 36th minute when Ibn Sabato scored a well-placed
01:05shot leaving the Super Eagles goalie standing overwhelmingly motionless. The Super Eagles
01:09instantly responded after the restarts with the reigning African Player of the Year,
01:14Vitor Osemen nodding home an equalizing goal for Nigeria in the 38th minute.
01:19Despite creating many scoring chances, Nigeria failed to get the winning goal. The match ended
01:23in a draw and a point shared between Nigeria and Equitaria Guinea in the first game.
01:29As the tournament progresses into match day 2, Ose Pesero discovered the winning formula
01:33for the Super Eagles as they edged past the Oaks by a lone goal. It was an epic battle that
01:39saw the
01:40Super Eagles being solid in their defence with a 3-4-3 tactical formation adopted by Ose Pesero.
01:46All of the Eagles players, from the goalkeeper to the defenders, midfielders and forward,
01:51gave their role and performed above average in that particular encounter.
01:55And that changed the narratives about the Super Eagles who had played 3 consecutive 1-1 draw
02:00in its lowly ranked teams. Nigeria continued their newly found form with a second game running after
02:05another 1-0 victory over Guinea-Bissau on match day 3 thanks to a 36-minute home goal from Opa
02:11Sangati,
02:12which was all the Eagles needed to secure the maximum points from the Kenley Contexted match.
02:17It was another game that showed how too close the Super Eagles of Nigeria had been in the tournament
02:21still not sharp and Kenneka in front of goal. Nigeria Anapolis striker Vito Oseme struggled
02:27throughout the game as he failed to get a shot at goal in a 95-minute play. The Super Eagles
02:33qualified
02:33for the Round of 16 level on points with surprise group leader Equitoria Guinea, both teams having
02:397 points each but for Equitoria Guinea better goal difference advantage. In the Round of 16,
02:45Nigeria were fixed with familiar foes, the indomitable Lions of Cameroon, their perennial rivals and
02:52nemesis. What looked like a mission impossible for the Eagles was attained by beating the Rigobertson-Gled
02:58Lions 2-0 at regulation time to qualify them for the quarterfinals. Nigeria adopted same defensive
03:05style worked for them to the extent that Blizzard Abubakar, the Cameroon top scorer who was the highest
03:11goal scorer at the 2021 edition, couldn't manage a shot at Nigerian goal pokes after being brought on
03:17late into the game. Ademola Lukman backed his first and second goal of the African Cup of Nations, having
03:23scored a brace a Nigerian goal against the Indomitable Lions. The Antalanta winger emerged player of the
03:30match for that encounter. The victory boosted the confidence of both the Nigerian team and their fans
03:36whom afterwards believe no other team in the tournament can beat them to the Afon title this term. Knowing
03:43also that the likes of Algeria, Egypt, Ghana, Senegal, Tunisia have been eliminated, Nigeria became the
03:50Ixt-ranked team remaining in the tournament apart from the Oxte Cote d'Ivoire who were ended a second
03:56chance and didn't take it for granted. Nigeria sailed through to the quarterfinals becoming only the
04:01second team to have won 44 knockout stage games after Egypt. In the quarterfinals, it was against
04:08the Dark Horses, the Antelopes of Angola, the Southern African country had a good battle against the Eagles
04:14and like their previous meetings, it was a clearly contextual game that could have gone either way. But
04:20the Super Eagles found a way through the boots of Ademola Lukman who now joined the likes of Odeon
04:25Egyalo, JJ Okocha and Rashidi Yekini to score twice in the Afcon knockout stage. Lukman scored the
04:31only goal of the game to help Nigeria reach their 15th Afcon semi-finals. Lukman for two consecutive
04:37matches emerged the man of the match and three goals in the bag for the Atalanta forward. In the semi
04:43-final,
04:44the Super Eagles were stretched beyond 90 minutes as the Vafana Vafana of South Africa broke Nigeria's
04:48clean sheet run after four consecutive games without conceding. Though the same was the case
04:54with the Super Eagles as the three-time champions beat Erwin Williams, the Bafana Vafana captain,
04:59to break his four-game clean sheet run. The semi-final game went into extra time and after a
05:05goalless 30-minute penalty shootout was used to decide the winner, where Super Eagles showed class
05:10with their spotkicks against Erwin Williams whose heroic spotkicks saving had helped Bafana Vafana
05:16reach that stage of the tournament. Nigeria won the shootout 4-2 and proceeded into the final,
05:23beaming with confidence having won five consecutive games. They have now become the favorite to clinch
05:28the 34th edition title and at a touching distance with their fourth Afcon title. The Super Eagles are
05:34ready for their eight Afcon finals and against the Oaks Ivrykoks who they played and beat 1-0 in the
05:41preliminary stage. Finally, it was the final game at the Alasani Watar Stadium. Arbidjan,
05:47Osepecero twacked things a little as we projected, started Chikweze ahead of Moses Simon and it was
05:53all going well for the Super Eagles who enjoyed less ball possession but drew the first blood in the 38
05:58minutes through captain William Trostecon who nodded from Ademona Lukman's corner kick and was touched
06:04before the park defender nodded from the edge of the area, hitting Uaya Fofana in goal and giving the
06:10Super Eagles a relief lead going into the second half. Nigeria looked set to repeat their 1-0 victory
06:17over the Ivorians at the Ebimpe Olympic Stadium during the group stage after Trostecon who had netted
06:23a penalty to the side. The first meeting scored the opener late in the first half. However,
06:28Frank Kessier equalized to just after the hour mark and Holla turned in Simo Aligrass Cross
06:34in the 81st minute to spark wide celebrations among the Sea of Orange in Abidjan stand. The match ended
06:412-1 in favour of Ivrykoks who emerged champions in the Super Eagles runners-up. And that's how the Eagles
06:47journey to silver medal glory through the 34th edition of the African Cup of Nations.
06:52And that's how we are wrapping this up with the Super Eagles silver medal journey at the 34th edition
06:58of African Cup of Nations which was held in Ivrykoks. It's been an amazing journey. We actually
