🛣️ ALL Roads Did NOT Lead to Rome — The Roman Empire's Giant Road Network

“All roads lead to Rome.”

But the actual Roman road network was far more complicated.

A new 2026 study mapped roughly 300,000 kilometres of Roman roads across Europe, North Africa and the Middle East. Researchers found that Rome was not the only major overland hub; cities such as Byzantium, Antioch, Ancyra and Corinth could play important roles in the network.

The study also challenges another popular image: Roman roads were not always perfectly straight. Geography often forced engineers to adapt routes around mountains, valleys and other terrain.
