Some nights on the river come with an unexpected kind of company.

The filmer, Chuck, was bowfishing on the Mississippi River near Clearwater, Minnesota, when mayflies that had just hatched began gathering around the boat’s bright front lights. As the boat sits on the water, dense clusters of insects fill the air and cover the lit area at the bow, swirling and landing in thick layers around the illuminated deck.

With the lights acting like a beacon, the scene turns into a striking reminder of how quickly a routine outing can be reshaped by a natural hatch.
