00:00Why did the French Revolution happen? At the time, society was divided into the clergy,
00:04nobility, and commoners. After the war in America, France was left broke. But Louis XVI and his queen,
00:11Marie Antoinette, continued their lavish lifestyle, while the rest of France was forced to work even
00:15harder and pay huge taxes. Soon, a famine came, and food became too expensive. In 1789, the king
00:23called a meeting of all three estates to solve the crisis, but completely ignored the commoners.
00:27So, the commoners formed the National Assembly and stormed the Bastille, marking the beginning of
00:32the revolution. Soon, the king would be captured and later executed. Many monarchies in Europe were
00:37scared that revolutionary ideas would spread to their empires as well, so they attacked France.
00:42However, France managed to beat them. Robespierre, one of the leaders of the revolution, went on to
00:47kill thousands for being suspected enemies of the revolution. However, in 1794, he would be taken to
00:53the guillotine as well. But in 1799, Napoleon would overthrow and take control of the government,
00:59ending the revolution.
