00:00 In the 1970s, our parents did things that today would get a knock on the door from Child Protective Services.
00:08 And we turned out mostly fine.
00:12 Let's begin with the car.
00:14 There were no car seats, there were no seat belts, or if there were, nobody used them.
00:20 You rode in the way back of the station wagon, facing traffic, waving at strangers, rolling around like laundry.
00:27 And mom's safety system? Her right arm flung across your chest at every stop sign.
00:34 That was the airbag.
00:36 Sunscreen? Never heard of her.
00:39 You went outside at 8 a.m. and came back at dark the color of a catcher's mitt, and that
00:44 was called a good summer.
00:47 Speaking of dark, the one rule.
00:50 Be home when the streetlights come on.
00:53 No phone, no GPS.
00:57 Your parents had no idea where you were for 10 hours, and they did not lose one minute of sleep

01:04 You drank from the garden hose.
01:07 You ate dinner at the neighbor's house, and nobody called ahead.
01:11 You rode your bike with no helmet, off a plywood ramp, over your friend,
01:16 and the only medical treatment was your mother licking her thumb and wiping your face.
01:21 If you misbehaved, any adult on the block was authorized to correct you.
01:27 And then they'd tell your mother, and you'd get it again at home.
01:32 Double jeopardy did not apply.
01:35 You played with lawn darts, actual metal spears, for fun.
01:40 You handled fireworks at age 7.
01:43 And somehow, against all odds, here we all are.
01:48 We didn't have safety.
01:51 We had freedom, skinned knees, and a whole neighborhood raising us.
01:57 And honestly, we wouldn't trade it.
