Early cartographers used traditional Indigenous names like **Athabasca** and **Nipigon**, or names connected to royalty and famous figures, like **Lake Louise**.
But when aviation and aerial photography revealed hundreds of thousands of previously unmapped bodies of water, mapmakers started running out of ideas. 😅
Soon, names like **Long Lake** and **Clear Lake** began appearing everywhere.
And when they needed even more names, cartographers sometimes turned to local hunters and loggers for suggestions—leading to some truly unusual official names, including **This Lake, Stupid Lake, Crotch Lake**, and Nova Scotia's famously named **Big Ass Lake**!
