00:00Life was missing its mystique. My squeaky toys had lost their squeak.
00:04And then, out of the blue, I saw the phone, and BAM! My destiny was calling me!
00:10Pitched my vision for a show. They loved it, thought I was a pro.
00:14They got my contract back to find, to their alarm, a dog had signed.
00:19Oh, I like that name.
00:24I didn't wait to renovate, found six contestants. All were great!
00:28And now I'm on the road to fame. I've got a game show and its name is...
00:33It's very catchy.
00:35Ruff Ruffman!
00:36It rolls off the tongue. Wait, stop!
00:39Somebody want to tell me why we got cats singing?
00:43Funding for Fetch with Ruff Ruffman has been provided by...
00:46The National Science Foundation, where discoveries begin.
00:59Creativity is the path to a healthy planet.
01:01That's why Green Dog Clothes for Kids is proud to sponsor Fetch on PBS Kids.
01:06And, by contributions to your PBS station from viewers like you.
01:16And here come the contestants now!
01:21Her favorite smell is fettuccine Alfredo.
01:24Harsha!
01:27He's got a foosball table, cause he plays lots of foosball.
01:31Jay!
01:33On a scale of one to ten, she gives her dancing skills a seven.
01:38Sammy!
01:40What does he like off the grill?
01:42Broccoli!
01:44It's DJ!
01:46She hates pumpkins.
01:49It's Noel!
01:52His great uncle created a new variety of apple.
01:56Sam!
01:58Let's get an update on the scores.
02:00Tied for fourth place with 25 points is Sammy and Noel.
02:04We have a tie for third place between Jay and Sam, each with 70 points.
02:08In second place, DJ with 80 points.
02:11And in first place, Harsha with 90 points.
02:15Hello, Fetchers!
02:18Man, I have recently found out that Blossom's been promoted.
02:24Well, she's, uh...
02:26No, you're not my boss, Blossom.
02:28I mean...
02:29Alright, settle down.
02:31Yes, I can't do anything without getting your approval first.
02:33But, um...
02:34Well, anyway, I have a new assistant.
02:36Strictly temporary.
02:37Name's Chet.
02:39Chet!
02:39Where are you?
02:40Whoa!
02:42Whoa!
02:42Easy, Blossom.
02:43Deep breaths.
02:44Anyway, turns out there are a lot of animals out there who need help.
02:48Some of them who need homes wanted to work here,
02:51but I don't even know if I can handle Chet.
02:53And that brings us to challenge number one!
02:56Yeah!
02:56A PSA!
02:58What's that?
02:58Sam!
02:59Sammy!
03:00You're gonna find out!
03:01Look for my friend Jay at the Animal Rescue League!
03:04Your instructions are in the mailbox, so go fetch!
03:07Let's get him!
03:10See you guys later!
03:11Bye!
03:12Good luck!
03:12Hey!
03:16Alrighty!
03:17I've been trying to build something today,
03:19and the way it's going, it just might be impossible.
03:22But is the impossible going to stop Noel and Jay?
03:26I hope not, cause it's challenge number two!
03:29Alright!
03:30This is my buddy Brian.
03:32You'll be meeting him at a construction site,
03:33so your hard hats and tool belt are in the wagon,
03:36and everything you need to know is in that mailbox,
03:38so go fetch!
03:40Alright!
03:41Thank you guys!
03:43Don't forget your equipment!
03:45Bye!
03:46See you later!
03:46Bye-bye!
03:47Happy building!
03:50As determined by the Fetch 3000,
03:52DJ and Harsha are staying behind in Studio G,
03:55but they'll be eligible to win points
03:57during the Halftime Quiz Show!
03:59Fetch operates on the Fetch Fairness Guarantee!
04:01All the contestants will have competed
04:03for the same number of points by the grand finale!
04:05So, with the four kids out on the challenges,
04:08up to 100 points are at stake in the triumph tally!
04:12Is a successful challenge in the cards for Jay and Noel?
04:15Let's find out!
04:18Right.
04:19Here we go.
04:19Wow, that's a big building.
04:2124th floor.
04:21Alright, we need to look for a sign.
04:23Oh, look.
04:24Sign with Brian.
04:25Hey!
04:26And there's Brian!
04:27Hi, I'm Brian.
04:28I'm an architect,
04:28and we're going to build some buildings today.
04:30Today, I'm going to turn you guys into pro card stackers.
04:35Cards?
04:35Yes!
04:36Card stackers!
04:37So, I hold the Guinness record for the world's tallest house of cards,
04:41which is 25 feet high.
04:43It weighed 250 pounds.
04:45Wow.
04:45That's right!
04:46He's a world champion card stacker!
04:48He actually has the world record!
04:51So, just give it a try and see...
04:53Hi, it looks like Noel is building a little pyramid there.
04:55So, you're going with the triangles method.
04:57That's what you're thinking is the best idea.
04:59Well, that's a logical assumption because the triangle is actually the strongest structural shape in most cases,
05:05but not in card stacking.
05:07I guess it's hard to stack cards when they're slanted.
05:10The first thing we need to do is take a look out the window at some real buildings to get
05:14an idea of how things are done in the real world.
05:16So, what do you guys notice?
05:17They're made up of squares and right angles.
05:20So, these buildings are like lots of cubes stacked on top of each other.
05:24Okay, so what do you think about the building with a clock tower?
05:26What do you notice about that one?
05:27Well, it's different from all the other ones.
05:29Usually, the older ones are like small, but that one's really tall.
05:33It's like almost as tall as the more modern glass one.
05:35Well, that's because that was one of the first buildings in the city to be built with a steel frame.
05:41So, tall buildings have steel frames.
05:43Let's go down and take a look at a real construction site.
05:46All right.
05:47Let's check in with the PSA team.
05:49Check!
05:50I am trying to do a show here.
05:53Are you Jay?
05:54I'm Jay.
05:55Welcome to the Animal Rescue League of Boston.
05:58Ruffson's here to make a PSA.
05:59Yeah, we are clueless though.
06:01What is a PSA?
06:02A PSA is a public service announcement.
06:04It's like a commercial except it's for a charitable organization like the Animal Rescue League of Boston.
06:10We're going to use that PSA to tell a lot of people about what we do.
06:13So, do you know much about the Animal Rescue League of Boston?
06:16I'm guessing they just help animals in need.
06:19Yeah, we have animals in our shelters.
06:21We rescue animals in trouble.
06:23We need to tell our story to a lot of people.
06:26And that's why we need this PSA, the public service announcement.
06:28Looks like we've got to get started on our PSA.
06:30Well, listen, before you go, Ruff left something for you.
06:34Oh, okay.
06:35Thanks for helping us out.
06:36Bye.
06:37Chad, what is going on in there?
06:39Seriously, what are you doing?
06:41Here's my friend, Claude.
06:42Hi, Claude.
06:43I'm in charge of the field operation here and watching all of these guys helping build this building.
06:48Wait, wait, wait a minute.
06:49We need to stack cards, not build buildings.
06:52What you're looking at here is what we call exoskeleton.
06:55It's like the bones in your body.
06:57That's what really is supporting the building.
06:59That's the grid that withstands all the forces that people and nature put on it.
07:05Can you talk to us a bit about why they put concrete on every floor?
07:10The concrete we put on the floor is not just because it's a hard surface to walk on.
07:15That concrete, when it hardened, actually acts as a diaphragm, a stiffener for that building.
07:20So that's all part of the structure of the building.
07:22So why are the beams shaped like that?
07:24We call it an I-beam.
07:25So what is an I-beam?
07:26If you were to look at the end of it, cut a slice through and look at the end of
07:30the beam, it looks like an I.
07:31And the two outside flanges reinforce the web in the middle, and the two faces stiffen that center section
07:39so that everything is stiff and can withstand the pressures that are put on it.
07:44Oh, thank you.
07:45So what does this construction stuff have to do with the cards?
07:48What's neat about this is that you can really see how all these little parts of a building go together
07:52in kind of a system that's very repetitive to create a much larger thing.
07:58And so that's kind of the point of you seeing a real building going up a lot of the way
08:02that cards go together.
08:03Oh, yes.
08:04They're going to use what they know about real buildings to make a building out of cards.
08:09Wow.
08:10Chet's got a lot of stuff.
08:12Is that a ping pong table?
08:14And a jacuzzi?
08:16All right, so let's figure out these keys.
08:18Maybe.
08:19Oh, yep.
08:20There you go.
08:20We got it.
08:21Hey, Fetchers.
08:22Everything here is fair game for you to use in your PSA.
08:25Go find Debbie in the adoption center.
08:28Let's go.
08:29Off to the adoption center and to find Debbie.
08:31Wow.
08:32Oh.
08:33Oh, my God.
08:34All right.
08:35Let's not go on over the cats.
08:37They're so cute.
08:38Don't touch the lens, please.
08:40I'm stressed.
08:40Isn't this cat so cute?
08:42Yes.
08:43The cat is adorable.
08:45Look how cuddly.
08:47What are these?
08:48These are ferrets.
08:49Hey, brother.
08:50It's a doggy.
08:51Hey, buddy.
08:52How's it going?
08:52Hi.
08:53They're so cute.
08:54Are you Debbie?
08:55Hi.
08:55They found Debbie.
08:56Welcome to the animal shelter.
08:57Would you like to meet one of the dogs?
08:58Yeah, sure.
08:59I think that's a great idea.
09:00Toby is a 10-year-old chihuahua.
09:03He's actually a dog.
09:04You would be able to use in your PSA if you'd like.
09:06Oh, cool.
09:07Yeah.
09:07Would you like to hold him?
09:08Sure.
09:09He's so cute.
09:11He's good looking.
09:12Oh, look how cute he is.
09:14Where do all these animals, like, come from?
09:16We get animals for all different reasons.
09:18Some animals are turned in from their owners because they're moving or they have allergies.
09:24Some animals are brought here because they're lost.
09:26And some animals were brought here because people weren't being nice to them and they needed
09:30a safe place to go until they found a new home.
09:32Would you guys like to have a tour of the shelter?
09:35Oh, yeah, definitely.
09:35Good boy.
09:36Wow.
09:36Look at that set up.
09:38Ferret's got a hammock.
09:39I want a hammock.
09:40So these are our ferrets.
09:43Oh, hey.
09:44Pardon you.
09:44This is Satya.
09:45He's an Angora rabbit.
09:48He's very, very soft.
09:50Feels like a marshmallow.
09:51And right around this way, we have kind of an unusual animal.
09:55What is it, an elephant?
09:56Oh, that's definitely a corn snake.
09:58A what?
09:58A what?
09:59Would you like a chance to hold him?
10:01Definitely.
10:02No, thanks.
10:06Rob, isn't this awesome?
10:08I hate snakes.
10:09I hate them.
10:11All right, we're back at our construction site.
10:14These are your building materials.
10:16We have observed the construction of actual buildings.
10:18Now, Noelle and Jay are going to make a house of cards using lessons they learned
10:21from that construction site.
10:23You have to learn to put these four cards up first.
10:26So this is the first cell.
10:28And everybody that wants to build a house of cards that's going to last has to learn how
10:31to build those without fail.
10:34And the reason is, is because this card would like to bend like this.
10:38But it can't do it because each card is reinforced by its neighbor at its midpoint.
10:44So like this card right here now, it has a neighbor on this side, forcing it to stay upright.
10:51Okay, let me try that.
10:52Yeah, no, maybe it's...
10:54Nope.
10:56So let's try to build a bigger grid and see what happens when we do that.
10:59Jed, I'm trying to build a structure here.
11:01Please, thank you.
11:02Oh, wow.
11:03Okay.
11:04I see an I-beam.
11:05Like, I see lots of them.
11:07You're right.
11:07It's basically a bunch of interlocked I-beams.
11:11There, see?
11:12It looks just like the grid.
11:13Oh, I'm getting a phone call.
11:16Hey, Fetchers!
11:17For your next challenge, I need you to build a card tower that's three stories tall.
11:21And not only that, it also has to support a statue of me holding my marble collection.
11:26That's seven pounds altogether!
11:28Good luck!
11:29It's kind of, like, ugly-ish.
11:32Hey!
11:33That's a trophy I won when I learned to roll over!
11:36Which I now find somewhat degrading, actually.
11:38Let's get started.
11:40Okay.
11:42Okay, here comes the foundation.
11:44Ralph, this is nerve-wracking.
11:45I know, I know, I know.
11:47You're doing a lot better than me.
11:48So just put another card right there and we're fine.
11:50Okay, so they're building their walls.
11:52Okay.
11:53One story done, Ralph.
11:55One story done!
11:56Oh my gosh!
11:56Oh!
11:57Oh!
11:57No, no, no!
11:58Domino effect!
11:59Okay.
12:00Just rebuild that side.
12:02Alright, we only lost a little bit, so we're good there.
12:05Looks like they're putting some cards on top just like a roof.
12:07Looks good!
12:09Now they repeat the same pattern on the second level.
12:12Steady.
12:13Easy, Noelle.
12:14Breathe.
12:15I got the top.
12:16I'll finish the top.
12:17That is a pretty big base.
12:19It's a good idea.
12:20See, now the weight's spread out over more cards.
12:22Okay.
12:24Okay.
12:24Looking good.
12:25Two floors.
12:26Hey!
12:26Back in Studio G with DJ and Harsha.
12:29Whoa!
12:29Getting ready to earn some points of their own during the Halftime Quiz Show.
12:33Let us brush up on the rules.
12:3550 points available.
12:36You have 60 seconds to answer as many questions as you can.
12:40Ten questions available at five points apiece.
12:43Are you ready?
12:44We're ready.
12:45Then let's go!
12:47The name for a person who builds buildings out of cards is A?
12:50Architech.
12:51Incorrect.
12:52What shape building did Noelle first try to make with the cards?
12:55Triangle.
12:56Correct.
12:57When the fetchers looked out the window, they noticed what shape in the buildings?
13:01Square.
13:01Yes!
13:02The support column used in the real building the fetchers looked at is called A?
13:07Eye beam.
13:07Yes!
13:07What does PSA stand for?
13:09Public Service Announcement.
13:11Correct!
13:12Jay and Noelle's card structure has to support what?
13:15Marbles.
13:16And what?
13:17On top of a statue of you.
13:18Yeah, that's right!
13:19What prevents the cards from bending in Jay and Noelle's card structure?
13:23Another card.
13:24Another card supporting it.
13:25That's right!
13:26The purpose of Sam and Sammy's PSA is to inform audiences about the services of the?
13:31Animal Rescue League.
13:32The Boston Animal Rescue League.
13:34Yes!
13:35What is the name of the dog Sam and Sammy are told they can use?
13:38Toby.
13:38Yes!
13:39And your time is up!
13:41Let's go over the one you missed.
13:42The name for a person who builds buildings out of cards is a card stacker.
13:48Card stacker.
13:49Yes.
13:50Let's see what you got.
13:51Vets 3,000.
13:5240 points.
13:53Respectable score.
13:54Nicely done, both of you.
13:56Have Sam and Sammy found an animal with movie star level charisma?
14:00Not unless they're using me.
14:02Let's check back at the farm and find out.
14:05Over here, this is a drop net.
14:08And this is what we use to catch dogs that have been out on the loose for a long time
14:12and are afraid of people.
14:14So here we have our stuffed dog that we pretend with.
14:16And you want to make sure that you use something that the dog likes.
14:19Today, we have dog food in there.
14:21Oh.
14:22Tossing a few egg rolls and you got a meal.
14:24And then, it's possible to catch the dog using the net system.
14:28Mike!
14:28Marie, was that...
14:29Oh, it was Mike.
14:31I didn't know you were under there.
14:31I didn't see you.
14:32Sorry about that.
14:33It scared me so bad.
14:35You're more than welcome to use this for your PSA if you'd like.
14:37Yeah, it's great.
14:39A lot of times, cats get stuck up in trees, and so we use these ropes to get the cat
14:44and bring the cat back down.
14:46Oh!
14:47That's Brian.
14:47He's part of our rescue team.
14:49Hey!
14:49Hey, Brian.
14:50This is where we practice rescuing cats out of trees.
14:52Maybe you guys can use it for your PSA.
14:54Yeah, that'd be great.
14:55That's a good idea.
14:56So what's the bag on your hip?
14:57This is what we use when we get up in the tree to put the cat in.
15:02We want to make sure the animal's nice and secure and safe before we come back down.
15:06This is our animal ambulance, and we use this to bring animals that were rescued back to the shelter or
15:11to our veterinarian.
15:12Well, it's time for me to check out, and thanks for coming today, and I can't wait to see it.
15:17Let's check back in with our card stackers.
15:19Ah!
15:20Chet!
15:21Could you not do that?
15:24Good job!
15:25They did it!
15:26They built a three-story card tower!
15:28But they're not done yet!
15:29And now it's time for the drop-dead gorgeous Ruff Ruffman statue.
15:34Hey, don't tape my mouth!
15:36Get down close.
15:37Oh, I'm so nervous!
15:39Don't think about what you're doing.
15:40Just set it on there, and don't shift it around.
15:43Oh, boy!
15:43Just set it on there.
15:44I'll get it easy!
15:45Good job!
15:46Whoa!
15:47It holds!
15:48But now it's time for the marbles!
15:51Yeah!
15:51Ha-ha!
15:53Whoa!
15:55That's quite a good idea!
15:57Easy does it!
16:01Yes!
16:01Whoa!
16:03Oh, man!
16:04Look at that!
16:04And it's holding seven pounds!
16:06Oh, but they're not done yet!
16:08Congrats, guys.
16:09But the bad news is...
16:11What?
16:12I have one more challenge for you.
16:14Come with me.
16:15All right.
16:16My tower's looking pretty good!
16:17Wait, check out!
16:18Oh, no, no!
16:19Oh!
16:20Do you even have a building permit?
16:22No, I don't think so.
16:24So I'm gonna write down possible locations.
16:26Okay.
16:26Sam and Sammy are coming up with ideas.
16:29Wow, people still use Polaroids.
16:31Let me just write down what it is.
16:32Oh, they're taking pictures of the different locations.
16:35See, that's smart.
16:36Hey, can we take some pictures?
16:40That was so unnecessary!
16:42How about the first shot?
16:43We'll have somebody, like, calling somebody else, maybe?
16:47And then we can show...
16:48Do the ambulance going by with the sirens.
16:50Ooh!
16:51I like that!
16:52It's very common for these to get stuck around any animal's neck.
16:57So I think the phone call should be,
16:58Your cat got its head stuck in that.
17:01Mm-hmm.
17:02And then it got scared and it ran up the tree.
17:04All right.
17:05Pin that up there.
17:06Now they're putting the pictures in order to map out their story.
17:09Murray, why don't we do this?
17:11And then, after that, we can show the real cat saying it got saved.
17:16It's all right.
17:16The end.
17:17The end!
17:18I love happy endings!
17:20Ralph, this is awesome, dude.
17:22Cameraman Sam is ready.
17:24Off they go!
17:25Come on!
17:25Director Sammy and cameraman Sam!
17:29Sweet biscuits, Chet!
17:31Please knock off the hammering!
17:32You cannot look.
17:35One, two, three.
17:37Oh!
17:39Oh!
17:40Oh, it's a clock tower.
17:41That looks just like the clock tower, but it's made of cards!
17:44Yeah, it's the custom house.
17:45Very good.
17:46That's right!
17:47It's the custom house!
17:48Your challenge is to tear it down.
17:51The more cards you pull out, the better, without the whole thing falling down.
17:55Some cards are structural, some cards are not.
17:59They're being held up by the building.
18:01If you look right here, there's a whole bunch of cards that are just sitting on here,
18:05and they're not really holding a whole lot.
18:07You can take out surprising amounts of cards.
18:10See, you can take out a whole corner.
18:12The more cards you pull out, the more points Ruff will give you.
18:16But the tower has to stay standing.
18:17We can pull these out.
18:18They're decorations.
18:19Yeah, yeah, get rid of those.
18:20They're not doing anything.
18:22Okay.
18:24Whoa.
18:25Got a lot of cards here, Ruff.
18:28Oh!
18:28Oh, hey, be careful!
18:30Oh!
18:33It's shaking, it's shaking.
18:34Careful!
18:35Oh, careful!
18:36Easy does it!
18:38Easy!
18:39No, no!
18:40Whoa, whoa, whoa!
18:41Oh!
18:42Oh!
18:42There goes the whole thing!
18:47Here we go, they go to Monte Carto.
18:49That was good.
18:50Nice.
18:50Hey, thanks a lot, man.
18:51Don't run off.
18:52Your next challenge is to pick these up as quickly as possible.
18:55We've got to go back to the garage.
18:57Yeah, we'll see if that can show you.
18:58Yeah, yeah, they've got to go back.
18:58They're on your garage.
19:01Alright, now here's what you do.
19:03You press this to start it.
19:04Alright, Ritz, quiet on the set, please.
19:06I'm just going to be like, hello?
19:08Be like, really nervous.
19:09I feel like, oh my gosh.
19:10Okay, ready?
19:11Go.
19:13My cat?
19:14Yeah, hello?
19:15Yes, good.
19:15Panting is good.
19:16Yeah, my cat, he got one of those soda plastic things.
19:20Got it on his neck and he got really, really scared and he ran up a tree.
19:23Get there as fast as you can.
19:24Yes, he's choking and in a tree.
19:26Okay.
19:26Okay, got it.
19:26Nice.
19:27Okay, so Sam, here's what I think.
19:28Since we want to promote the name, say, hello, Animal Rescue League.
19:31Don't be like, this is.
19:32Yeah, okay.
19:33You know?
19:33Fine direction, Sammy.
19:34Ready?
19:34Go.
19:35Hello, Animal Rescue League.
19:36My cat, he got one of those, the soda plastic containers stuck on his neck and he got really
19:42scared and he ran up a tree.
19:43Got it.
19:44Okay, cool.
19:45Yeah, we need Mike to join the...
19:46All right, you're gonna run the siren for like a few seconds and then you're gonna drive
19:50off.
19:50Okay, so while we're shooting this, I need you to go up the tree and wait for us to come
19:55down there.
19:56Three, two, one.
19:58You know an animal's getting rescued when you hear that.
20:02Okay, apparently I don't have a tall enough tripod.
20:04Now it's time to rescue the cat from the tree.
20:06So what we need you to do is take the cat and put it in the bag and then just
20:10come down.
20:13Cat's in the bag.
20:15Get it?
20:16It's a...
20:17Okay.
20:18Apparently some people around here don't like cat humor.
20:22All right, thank you.
20:23I gotta run.
20:23Oh, thanks.
20:24Save my cat.
20:24Gotta go.
20:25Hey.
20:25All right, well, we need Toby.
20:26Here you go.
20:27Oh, hey, Debbie.
20:28I heard you were looking to use Toby for the shot.
20:30Yeah, it's great.
20:30Wow, we're using a live animal!
