00:01A leatherback turtle has returned to Rantau Abang Beach in Terengganu and laid 81 eggs,
00:08less than two weeks after it was first recorded landing at Pasir Puti Beach in Marang.
00:14Terengganu Fisheries Department Director Pang Yukang said the world's largest turtle species
00:20was believed to have landed between 1.30am and 2.30am on Sunday.
00:27The nest was discovered by a licensed turtle egg collector at about 4am,
00:33but the mother turtle had already returned to the sea.
00:36The department believes it could be the same turtle that laid 44 eggs at Pasir Puti Beach on September 1.
00:45The turtle's tracks measured 2.2m,
00:48while the eggs have been transferred to the Turtle Conservation Centre Hatchery in Rantau Abang for incubation.
00:55The eggs are expected to hatch within 50 to 70 days.
01:00The mother turtle is also expected to return in about two weeks to lay eggs for the third time.
01:06The last recorded leatherback turtle landing on a Terengganu beach was in 2017.
