00:31Yes, we are really frustrated because of the context of the game.
00:37We were in advance first, after we conceded this 1-1 with their first opportunity.
00:46And the red card asked me to reorganize the team in 5-3-1 to keep a lot of our
00:57principles.
00:58But we did a tactical mistake at the end of the first half and they scored the second goal, 2
01:05-1 for them.
01:06In the second half, we came back with the same organization as I explained.
01:12We created things, we have the ball, we come back to the result, 2-2.
01:19We have the opportunity for the 3-2, we missed it.
01:22And at the end, it's really hard to concede this third goal in the same way with a cross and
01:28a ball not win in our box.
01:33And I'm really frustrated for the players because they gave a lot on the pitch and they don't have the
01:39income of their effort.
01:40We spoke on Thursday about the defence gradually improving, but it seems like it's going backwards.
01:47It's now 11 goals conceded in four games.
01:50How concerned are you about that issue?
01:52Yes, it's too much goals conceded. I'm aware of that.
01:57I think today we conceded less chances for the opponent, but they were really efficient.
02:04And what is important to know and we saw the same thing.
02:11We took three times the same goals, a cross and a ball not win in our box.
02:18That's why we have to work on that because now we close the play, but we have to deal with
02:24it to prevent the crosses and to win the ball in the box.
02:27Do you have the personnel to solve that problem?
02:30Because of course you have only got one central centre-back.
02:33Sorry?
02:34Do you have the personnel to solve that problem?
02:36Because you only have one player who can play in the central centre-back position naturally.
02:40No, we have other possibilities to take.
02:48No, no, it's always a problem when a player is missed, but we have a solution to replace him.
02:57Hi Pierre.
02:59Just wondered where JD Convoy was today.
03:02He wasn't in the squad.
03:03What was the reason for that?
03:05It was a sporting decision.
03:08But I have to be honest with you, I didn't take him in the team because of his game in
03:18Fulham and what he did during the week.
03:21I spoke with him, I want to him more, I need more from him.
03:28I'm sure he is able to do and I wait for a good reaction of his part from Monday.
03:36You did the same with Eva Angersand and Dwight McNeil when you weren't happy with their performance.
03:41But you also talked about the importance of having a settled side.
03:44How are you getting that balance?
03:46And, you know, how are you getting that balance?
03:49Because if you're dropping them after what you see as poor performances, then you're not getting a settled side.
03:55Do you think that also plays a part in the goals that you've conceded?
04:00I don't know if I understand well the question, but I will try to respond, to reply, sorry.
04:10You know, when I put 11 players on the pitch, I'm in my head.
04:16It's the best team of the moment to win or to create something.
04:20And it's not a pleasure to put out a player, to don't take him in the team, to don't take
04:26him in the group.
04:27And I always wait a reaction of them.
04:31But today I didn't see a team on the pitch who gave up.
04:35I see players in 100%, maybe more of what they have to do.
04:42They give their best.
04:43I think the mentality is here and I have to protect that.
04:48That's why when I think some players are not at their best level of my demands, I take this kind
04:56of decision.
04:57But for me, it's not a pleasure to do that.
04:59So, yeah, the second part of that question was more about you want a settled team and you want your
05:05defence especially to get used to each other.
05:08But you've changed the defence, partly forced, in every game this season.
05:13Yeah, yeah.
05:15And we have to continue because of the red card.
05:18But we need stability.
05:20We need stability with a lot of games.
05:23That's why we need rotation for the freshness.
05:27But we have to, I have to find the best back three of the moment and to just have some
05:36little rotations to be more balanced than we are.
05:40But today, I think we are more balanced than every other game.
05:45We consider the goals as I described.
05:49But we don't consider too much chances at the end, less than the other game.
05:56But we have to be now more aggressive outside because we close the playing side.
06:02Do you see progress then in the defence or the defensive unit as a whole?
06:07Do you feel like you're making progress?
06:09In the defensive unit, yes.
06:11But now the problem is in another part of the play on sides.
06:17We concede too much crosses and we don't win the ball in the box.
06:22There are still new problems.
06:25But the consequence of what we did well is because we closed the play inside.
06:31Now it's clear.
06:33But we have to be more efficient in the consequence of that.
06:38And Dean Henderson wasn't involved today.
06:40What was the issue of him?
06:42He played injured from the beginning of the season because he injured him in Freiburg.
06:49He played with that.
06:51He didn't win too much, but he played well.
06:54But the pain is too hard for the moment and we don't have to take a risk.
06:58I think he will be back for Nottingham for us.
07:02And so just one more on the decision to drop, you know, J.D. Convoy and previously Evan Gassand and
07:09Dwight McNeil.
07:10Is this you sort of saying to your players, this is my way, you need to play better.
07:15Otherwise, I'm going to drop you.
07:16And just showing your authority as a new manager, especially.
07:22I don't care about my authority.
07:24I just want the player at 100% of what they are able to do.
07:30And when they give less, I have to shake them.
07:37But for me, it's really a problem because normally I needn't to do that.
07:45Because every player has to be focused on his job and what he has to do.
07:50Maybe it's my interpretation, but they have to understand my demands and why I do that.
07:57But like I told you, it's not a pleasure to do that.
07:59I prefer to make the choice between 25 players, ready to play, fit and 100% in mentality.
08:11Just on that, why do you feel you are having to do that at the moment at Crystal Palace, given
08:17it's not something you think you'd normally have to do?
08:21What I did bad?
08:23In terms of what you did with JD today and with the other players earlier, why is that happening?
08:33You know, with this kind of situation, when I took it and the result is positive, always everybody thinks it's
08:43a good way to do.
08:44But when we lose, it's more difficult to understand and to accept this kind of decision.
08:52But my view is not a short term, it's in long term.
08:57JD is always a young player.
08:59He needs to improve.
09:03He has a lot of gap with the level he can achieve.
09:08And I'm sure with the time, it will be good to do like this with him.
09:14You've been very open with where it's JD, Evan, Dwight, of saying you need more from them.
09:21How do you make sure that that criticism is constructive for them and they don't respond negatively to that criticism?
09:28By giving them the perspective to come back.
09:33Because some players didn't play, were not with us in some games and now they are with us.
09:40And the most important thing is not to give me reason or not.
09:45I don't care to have reason.
09:46But the most important thing is to have the player at the best level.
09:52And I think some of them are able to do more.
09:54That's why I take this kind of decision.
09:57And just finally, our first goal today for Ipswich felt like Palace were expecting an offside flag.
10:04Axel Dostasi makes a pretty nasty challenge which leads to his red card.
10:09Why do you think your team are making what seem like quite basic defensive errors?
10:15It's difficult to make the link between these two things.
10:20Because first of all, I didn't comment the referee's decision.
10:25And I want that the players continue to play, especially in session.
10:30Because now with the VAR, the decisions are late.
10:35And we have to protect the box.
10:37We have to continue to play and don't wait for the referee's decision.
10:43But with all this kind of thing, it's a context.
10:47We know what we need.
10:49We know what we have to do.
10:51And we just have to do the job now.
10:55I don't know if it's a good answer to your question.
10:58Just on the first goal and expecting the offside flag, is that a concern?
11:04That the players seem to stop playing?
11:06Yeah.
11:07I had this discussion with them yesterday because they did the same thing in a session.
11:12And I told them to continue to play because of the VAR.
11:18Now, I prefer to deflect the ball in corner and ask to the referee if they were offside or not.
11:28Just quickly on Axel De Sazi, how do you deal with somebody who does that on the pitch?
11:34Obviously, it's quite a reckless challenge.
11:36I'd say you don't have any arguments about the decisions showing a red card.
11:39And how will you deal with him after that?
11:43For the moment, I didn't speak with him because I have to manage the other players in the game.
11:51I think he is frustrated for his teammates because he let them in a numerical inferiority.
11:58But I will speak with him about that on Monday.
12:22Yes, we need to do it because at the end, we have not too much choice to change Jürgen when
12:31he is in the game.
12:32And he was tired, but I'm really satisfied with his performance.
12:37He scored three goals in two games, but he gave a lot to the team by defending, by being positive.
12:43And it's a good way to do.
12:46I want to congratulate him for that.
12:48But I think he is really frustrated by the result too.
12:53That's why he and us need to continue our work to be able to play 90 minutes with the players
13:01able to perform in the moment.
13:05Okay, thank you.
13:06That's it.
