00:04In New York, family members of the more than 3,000 victims
00:08remember that fateful September 11th, compounding this pain
00:11in the declassification of thousands of documents
00:14revealing a truth that had remained hidden for over two decades.
00:19Our New York correspondent, Henry Camelo, has more.
00:23On this Friday, bells rang out again in lower backhand
00:27in honor of the more than 3,000 victims of that fateful September 11th, 2001.
00:35Although 25 years have passed, images of the Twin Towers in flames
00:41following the impact of two passengers' planes hijacked by members of al-Qaeda
00:46continue to shock the world.
00:49For many, these are wounds that will never heal.
00:52He called them 10 minutes before the towers were hit.
00:55Unfortunately, at that time, they were talking about how to store boats
00:59and do things for the rest of the winter.
01:02And then when my husband found out, he hit.
01:06He never heard from Paul again.
01:07We did searches trying to find any survivors
01:10and then trying to recover bodies of our brothers who died that day
01:15as well as all the people in the building.
01:16More than 3,000 people died on September 11th, 2001,
01:21following the collapse of the Twin Towers,
01:25including over 400 firefighters and rescue workers.
01:29But in these 25 years,
01:31hundreds more have died due to this posture to toxic dust,
01:35and survivors suffered from serious respiratory illnesses and cancer.
01:40Yet, they still have not received compensation as 9-11 victims.
01:47We cannot simply talk about how this affected the lives of 3,000 people
01:52and the lives of so many others who were breathing contaminated air.
02:00While, at the time, authorities and New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani
02:07were telling the world, and we see the footage,
02:12I'm not making this up,
02:14that the air was safe to breathe and everything was secure.
02:19But that wasn't the case.
02:21Documents declassified 25 years later,
02:24revealed by Mayor Zoram Mandani,
02:27showed that former Republican Mayor Rudolf Giuliani
02:30knew the air 9-11 workers were breathing was highly toxic.
02:36Yet, he chose to remain silent.
02:39These are documents that show what the city knew
02:41about the toxic air around Ground Zero,
02:44when they knew it,
02:46and how they acted to limit liability.
02:48They contain details about DEP's response.
02:52They show how asbestos was found
02:54nearly everywhere that inspectors tested.
02:57And they will help New Yorkers access the health care they need.
03:00And although many New Yorkers are celebrating
03:03the declassification of these documents,
03:06others believe former Mayor Giuliani
03:09should face legal charges
03:11for lying about information
03:13that could have saved the lives
03:16of thousands of Ground Zero workers.
03:18I would like someone or people to be held accountable
03:22for having had hidden away these files.
03:24But unfortunately, I feel probably no one will be held accountable.
03:28And, you know, and we just have to continue on
03:31and deal with the sicknesses
03:32and just try our best to survive and go on.
03:3525 years later,
03:36these memorials remind new generations
03:39that behind every name
03:41are parents, children, and family members
03:44who continue to mourn the loss of their loved ones.
03:47Many of them were never able to recover their bodies.
