ONE PLANT, BUT IT CAN PRODUCE GREEN TEA, BLACK TEA AND OOLONG TEA – DID YOU KNOW?

GREEN TEA PLANT – Camellia sinensis

Known as tea, green tea, or simply the tea plant, Camellia sinensis (L.) Kuntze belongs to the tea family – Theaceae, in the order Ericales.

This evergreen species is naturally distributed from the eastern Himalayas through southern China to Indochina, including Vietnam. Today, tea is widely cultivated in many regions with suitable climates.

🌱 IDENTIFICATION FEATURES

Stem: The tea plant is a shrub or small tree with a woody stem and many branches. If allowed to grow naturally, it can reach several meters in height. However, in commercial cultivation, plants are regularly pruned and shaped into low, spreading bushes to make maintenance and harvesting easier.

🍃 Leaves: Simple leaves arranged alternately, with oval to elongated blades. They are green, relatively thick, and usually glossy on the upper surface. The leaf margins have small serrations, with pointed tips.

Young shoots and young leaves are the most important parts harvested for tea production.

🌼 Flowers: Flowers usually grow in the leaf axils, either singly or in small clusters. They are white, lightly fragrant, with numerous prominent yellow stamens in the center.

🟤 Fruit: The fruit is a capsule that turns from greenish-brown to brown as it matures, usually containing about 1–4 seeds. The plant can be propagated by seeds or cuttings.

🍵 USES

1. Tea production: The young shoots and leaves of Camellia sinensis are the raw materials used to produce tea. Depending on the cultivar, growing region, and especially the methods of processing, oxidation, and manufacturing, they can be made into green tea, black tea, oolong tea, white tea, yellow tea, and many other types of tea.

2. Beverage: Tea is widely consumed as a hot or cold beverage. Tea leaves contain caffeine and many naturally occurring compounds that contribute to the characteristic flavor and properties of tea.

3. Economic value: Tea is an important industrial crop, providing raw materials for the tea-processing and beverage industries, as well as for various other products.

🌱 HOW TO GROW

Tea prefers slightly acidic, organic-rich, loose, and well-drained soil. The plant needs good light, although in hot and dry conditions, partial shade may be beneficial.

The soil should be kept consistently moist but should not remain waterlogged for long periods. Tea can be propagated by seeds or cuttings; cuttings are commonly used to preserve the characteristics of the parent plant.

When grown for harvesting young shoots, tea plants are regularly pruned and shaped to encourage the production of new shoots and make harvesting easier.

🌿 INTERESTING FACT

Green tea, black tea, and oolong tea do not necessarily come from different plant species. They can all be produced from Camellia sinensis – with the major differences coming from how the leaves are processed and the degree of oxidation they undergo after...
