Green stems nestled among white spines,
Come bloom season, the whole pot glows fiery red.
This is the peanut cactus, in Vietnam also known as the rat-tail cactus – small, but its flowers are remarkably striking.
Scientific name is Echinopsis chamaecereus, belonging to the cactus family – Cactaceae. This species is native to Argentina.

🌿 Botanical characteristics:
The plant has succulent green stems, small and elongated, about 1 cm in diameter, usually growing in many branches to form a dense clump. The stems tend to creep horizontally or trail down when grown in pots.

On the stems are many areoles – the characteristic spine-bearing points of cacti – from which clusters of fine white spines radiate evenly around the stem.

🌸 The most special feature is its flower.
The flower is quite large compared to the stem, funnel-shaped, usually a brilliant reddish-orange, standing out vividly against the green and white of the stems and spines.

Uses:
The peanut cactus is mainly grown as an ornamental and collector's plant, suitable for pots, hanging baskets, balconies, gardens, or cactus dish gardens. When the plant develops into a full clump and blooms en masse, its decorative effect is stunning.

🌱 How to grow:
The plant loves sun and good air circulation. Use a very well-draining substrate – you can mix cactus soil with coarse sand, perlite, or mineral pumice.

Water only when the substrate is relatively dry, avoid leaving the plant sitting in moist soil for long periods. In Vietnam, especially during the rainy season, place the plant under cover to prevent waterlogging and root rot.

It can be propagated very easily by stem cuttings: detach a healthy branch, let the cut dry and callous over, then lay it on a dry, airy substrate to root.

Peanut cactus – a tiny, spiny plant, but when it blooms, it is surprisingly brilliant.
