Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman reportedly urged U.S. President Donald Trump to launch strikes against the Iran-backed Houthis after Houthi forces seized the strategic Yemeni port city of Mokha near the Bab el-Mandeb Strait.

MBS reportedly made the request twice as concerns grew over the Houthi advance along Yemen’s Red Sea coast and the threat to the strategically vital Bab el-Mandeb chokepoint, a major route for global shipping and energy supplies.

But Trump reportedly refused to directly intervene with U.S. military strikes against the Houthis, despite Saudi Arabia’s growing concerns over the escalating situation in Yemen.

The developments highlight rising tensions between Saudi Arabia, the Houthis and Iran-backed forces around the Red Sea and Bab el-Mandeb, one of the world’s most important maritime chokepoints.
