00:02Tasmania Police has charged the 29-year-old man from Nile in central Tasmania over a series of
00:07fires they allege were deliberately lit between August 2025 and April 2026. The charges come
00:13after an in-depth investigation into blazes near Perth, near Launceston, Sassafras, Longford,
00:19Whitemore and Brett Auburn. The fire at Brett Auburn tore through thick gauze and vegetation
00:24near Launceston's airport in April this year. Twenty fire crews worked to contain the fire,
00:29which destroyed a number of power poles, closed a major highway and caused heavy smoke to affect the
00:34region. Police say it was lucky nobody was injured in the Brett Auburn blaze and the unpredictable
00:39nature of deliberately lit fires means they always pose a high risk to the public. Police say they'll
00:45continue to investigate suspicious fires in north and northwest Tasmania. The man will face the
00:50magistrate's court in Launceston later this month.
