00:00The hockey world has lost one of its biggest personalities, Barry Melrose, the mullet, the suits, the voice that introduced
00:08a generation to this sport, has sadly passed away at the age of 70.
00:13So Melrose's wife, Cindy, confirmed his death Wednesday to ESPN's Steve Levy.
00:18He stepped away from the network back in 2023 after a Parkinson's diagnosis, which is a fight that he'd been
00:26in ever since.
00:26We celebrate his legendary career as a broadcaster, but Melrose, the player and coach, was hockey through and through.
00:36He appeared in 300 NHL games as a defenseman for the Jets, the Maple Leafs, and the Red Wings from
00:421979 to 1986 before leading Wayne Gretzky and the Kings to the Stanley Cup Final in his first season as
00:50head coach in 1993.
00:52He posted an overall record of 84, 108, and 29 as a coach, also including a 16-game stint with
01:00the Lightning back in 2008.
01:03We all know he was a legend on the ice and in the coach's box, but his true calling was
01:08in the TV studio where he became one of hockey's beloved figures with his flashy suits and big personality.
01:15For nearly 30 years, he was ESPN's signature hockey voice.
