Europeans are skipping family visits and medical appointments to pay energy and fuel bills, study finds

The rising cost of fuel and energy bills is hammering Europeans, with some taking extreme measures to offset higher prices, such as giving up on medical care. However, not all of them are affected equally.

00:00How are Europeans coping with their energy and fuel bills?
00:07Across Europe, financial insecurity is becoming a long-term feature of people's living conditions,
00:13with energy poverty further aggravating their vulnerability.
00:17More than 6 in 10 Europeans fear they will not be able to afford fuel costs,
00:23according to an annual survey by Ipsos and Secours Populaire Français.
00:27Among the 10 European countries studied, Greek, Italian and Portuguese respondents
00:32are the most worried about fuel expenses.
00:35Over the past year, more than 1 in 3 Europeans has sacrificed significant expenses,
00:41such as food and health care, to cope with their energy or fuel bills.
00:45People in Moldova and Greece sacrifice up to 3 times more than people in Germany and the UK.
00:52When confronted with fuel costs, the first trade-offs involve holidays,
00:56followed by visits to relatives living far away.
00:59In addition, Europeans are adopting many other strategies to help cope with energy bills,
01:04from lowering or turning off the heating to taking cold showers.
01:09Almost 7 in 10 respondents have implemented at least one measure to reduce their energy bills,
01:14while slightly more than 5 in 10 respondents claim to implement several.
01:18For example, French and Greek respondents are the most likely to turn off the heating in certain rooms,
01:24while Moldovans choose not to use certain appliances.
