00:00Chester Zoo in England has welcomed three baby rock hyrexes, two males and one female,
00:06in a rare breeding success.
00:08The six-week-old pups named Russ and Spad and Jackie were first shown to the public
00:14this week.
00:14They are tiny, weighing just 350 grams, and staff say visitors are delighted to spot them
00:20in the enclosure.
00:21Zoo staff say the species is not often bred in captivity, making the arrival of the pups
00:26especially significant.
00:29A lot of visitors seem to be very excited when they spot them for the first time, because
00:33you're looking in there, you're picturing this large mammal, and then when you see the
00:36rock hyrex, the adult, they go, oh is that the baby?
00:40And then we're like, no, no, if you look just beside it, and then just beside it out pops
00:44one of the little pups, and honestly it's amazing just seeing the excitement from visitors when
00:50they get to see them for the first time, it just makes it really special.
00:53Rocks hyrexes may look small, but they have a surprising family link, they are related
00:58to elephants and manatees, like elephants, their front ancestors keep growing throughout
01:04their lives.
