A short video about the book The McAskill War.

00:09What is the McCaskill War? What's it all about? Well, it started out 2016, 2017. I was working
00:20at our local museum, and I came across a treasure trove of hundreds of letters that had been sent
00:26during World War I to Gladstone. I was thinking, oh, something should be done with these letters
00:33because there's some interesting stuff in there. So 2017 happened to be the anniversary of Armistice,
00:41World War I, so I wrote a one-man show about that and using those letters and went around the
00:50school
00:50division to perform it. And this was quite well received. I was still thinking there was a lot
00:56more letters and something should be done with them. Well, as time went on, technology developed
01:04and it became possible to scan these pages, these letters, and have software analyze what they said
01:14because one of the problems was it was difficult to make out some of this handwriting. It was shaky
01:22and yellowed. So it's a software developed to do this. I started to scan the pages and then have
01:32the software analyze it. And it wasn't perfect. I still had to double check it, but it was enough
01:37to speed up the process significantly. So the McCaskill War is a collection of those letters transcribed
01:47from the original handwritten pages and with all the pictures and postcards that these gentlemen sent
01:55along. So if you want to have a primary source material of World War I, this would be for you.
