00:00Titanosaurs were among the largest animals known to have walked the Earth,
00:04and fossilized eggshells found in the far south of Argentina
00:07showed that they nested much further south than previously thought.
00:10One of the biggest titanosaurs was Patagototan,
00:13which was longer than three double-decker buses.
00:16Some estimates say it weighed more than 70 tons,
00:18roughly as much as a fully-loaded Boeing 737.
00:22And this is the only occurrence in the southern hemisphere
00:25to show us that dinosaurs were actually nesting in these high-latitude regions.
00:32You know, that would be in the area of the Drake Passage today
00:36off the tip of South America.
00:40So the other option is basically, you know, building a nest
00:45and burying those eggs in some sort of substrate.
00:50You know, at that time, at that latitude,
00:53the sunlight probably wasn't strong enough to fully incubate those eggs
01:00as they would have needed to survive.
01:04So if you could envision these nests of eggs
01:10buried in huge mounds of vegetation
01:13that would have been decaying or rotting through that period of incubation,
01:20that fermenting, for lack of a better word,
01:23or rotting vegetation would have produced heat
01:25to actually incubate those eggs
01:27so that the embryos can grow and eventually hatch.
