00:00Kohl generation has stopped growing in 17 of 26 Chinese provincial level regions tracked
00:06according to the think tank EMBA in its review of China's energy transition.
00:12Regions where kohl production has stopped growing include industrial heavyweights such
00:16as Shandong and Hunan, both have turned to producing thermal power in recent years.
00:22Electric trucks are also gaining ground, they accounted for 26% of new truck sales in China
00:28last year. For perspective, leading European markets have only just reached that number
00:32for EV cars. China's clean technology exports topped $220 billion last year, bringing it
00:40closer in scale to the country's three biggest traditional exports, garments, furniture and
00:46household appliances. Yang Piching is from the global think tank EMBA, who wrote this report.
00:53In 2025, all of China's electricity demand increase was met by clean energy sources. So as a result
01:01of this, thermal power generation, which is mostly from coal, declined by 0.7% last year. And how
01:09significant, this is the first time that coal generation declined in a decade. And this is the
01:15first time that this is predominantly driven by the strong growth of wind and solar. With that,
01:23we're observing that China's current focus of the transition is moving away from just building clean
01:29energy capacity towards a clean electricity system becoming more integrated in the energy system and the
01:37wider economy. So the transition is moving towards a new stage in China as clean energy starts to displace
01:44fossil fuel in the system. I mean, coal generation has stopped growing isn't the same as we've stopped
01:53using coal, is it? I mean, the world still has a long way to go. Yes, exactly. So we mentioned
02:02earlier
02:03that power generation from coal dropped by 0.7%. But in fact, power generation from coal has been fluctuating
02:11around a similar level since the beginning of 2024. And this shows that the sustained growth of coal power
02:19generation in China that lasted for decades is soon reaching a peaking stage. However, coal has played a
02:27hugely important role in the Chinese economy and has been a dominating source for power generation, not to
02:34change the world. As I mentioned, it is very important for people and our society. In addition, our
02:40infrastructure as well as markets and regulations need to be transformed to adapt to a system with higher
02:47proportion of renewables. Therefore, yes, indeed, challenges remain, but it is up to us now to
02:57transform the role of coal and to adapt to a system with more and more wind and solar integrated in
03:04it.
03:04How much is this going to take then? How much longer is this going to take to transform, to change?
03:12Well, the next five years, so the 15th five year plan period will be very important for China's energy
03:21transition. So 2030 will be the year of China's carbon peaking commitment. So China has been building an
03:29impressive amount of wind, solar and other clean energy technologies. And beyond the great expansion of
03:39clean energy looking towards 2030, we're seeing that China's priorities shifting towards the wider
03:47transition of building grid infrastructure, of the development of clean flexibility and other
03:53important technologies. So however, we are, even though that challenges remain, we are also seeing that
04:00the momentum for the transition remains, particularly given that clean energy technologies are becoming an
04:07important pillar of the Chinese economy. So the momentum for transition remains strong.
