00:01Hello, and it's been a wonderful day, hasn't it?
00:06I'd really like to just have a moment to give thanks
00:11for all the people who have made this possible.
00:19There's a lot of people putting their heart and soul into this,
00:23and it shows.
00:27So, I wanted to bring to the conversation
00:32a sort of a dizzying reality around the habits of the way
00:43most of us who have been through a school system
00:47and taken part in the modern world,
00:51the habits of how we've come to perceive.
00:56And I wanted to start with this quote from my father,
01:01which is, ironically, probably the most famous quote
01:06that he never said.
01:10And I'm pretty sure he never said it because...
01:15Because, now I'm not exactly sure in the Portuguese translation,
01:21but funciona.
01:22Funciona.
01:23Okay.
01:24So, that is not a word he would use.
01:30Okay.
01:31So, this quote comes from a talk he gave
01:37in which he said something like,
01:41the major problems in the world
01:43are the result of the difference
01:46between the way nature learns
01:50in mutual interdependent processes of vitality,
01:57and the way people think.
02:00But there was an editor.
02:03And the editor had been through the school systems
02:07and lived in the modern world
02:09and did the thing,
02:12which is he changed that
02:14to how, in English, it's how nature works.
02:17In Portuguese, how nature functions.
02:20And both of those words refer to mechanism.
02:25Both of them secretly call up in us
02:30a familiar world of mechanistic process,
02:37which is very different
02:40than the way life makes life.
02:47My father,
02:50I want to mention him
02:52because one of the most important pieces of work
02:56that we can do right now,
02:58and thank you, Denise, for bringing this in,
03:02is in the intergenerational conversation.
03:06The way that each of us
03:10is in relationship
03:11to the generations who came before
03:14and the generations who are younger than us
03:17and the ones not yet here.
03:21How are these habits of thinking
03:24being transmitted invisibly
03:28between the generations?
03:30And how do we change that?
03:32So one of the things
03:34that has happened in my family
03:38is that
03:42even though
03:43every ancient culture
03:46since ever
03:48has known
03:49that life was
03:51an interdependent
03:54process of vitality
03:56producing more vitality,
03:59it really has taken
04:01quite a bit of time
04:02for this to come
04:04to Western science
04:05and to the academy.
04:08It's problematic.
04:10And my grandfather,
04:13he was the person
04:15who actually coined
04:17the term genetics
04:18back in 1905.
04:22And during that time,
04:25there was another darling
04:27of science.
04:28And the darling of science
04:30at that time
04:31was eugenics.
04:33Not the same.
04:35Genetics is the study
04:37of how things change
04:39over time,
04:40how organisms change.
04:43And eugenics is the study
04:45of how you make them change.
04:48Not the same.
04:50So this eugenics piece
04:56was an obvious consequence
05:00that came out
05:02of the industrial era.
05:05and in the industrial era,
05:08there were,
05:10there was a time
05:12when if you want to study
05:14systems change,
05:16study that moment.
05:17Because in that time period,
05:20those ideas
05:21of how things work,
05:23how to make things
05:24optimized,
05:25efficient,
05:26faster,
05:27better,
05:27cheaper,
05:28the factory,
05:29the machine,
05:30how that came to be
05:32and infected everything.
05:35It infected
05:36the health system,
05:37the education system,
05:39the economic system,
05:41the political system,
05:43the family.
05:44It infected
05:45even architecture,
05:47agriculture,
05:48everywhere.
05:50It was a transcontextual,
05:52multifaceted
05:53systems change
05:55that we haven't
05:56gotten over yet.
05:58So when my dad says
06:01the major problems
06:03in the world
06:04are the result
06:05of the difference
06:06between how nature
06:07produces life
06:09through mutually
06:11vital processes
06:13that are in
06:13interdependent relationship,
06:19what he's saying
06:21is that those ideas
06:24that came
06:26with eugenics
06:28have actually
06:30become
06:31so deeply
06:33entrenched
06:34that even
06:36in the best
06:38of intentions
06:39they sneak
06:41into a project
06:42that should
06:44be about
06:45the ecology,
06:47that could
06:48be about
06:50multiculturalism,
06:52that could
06:52be
06:54holding
06:55other ideas
06:56if they sneak
06:57in.
06:58I wanted
07:00to give you
07:00this example.
07:03This is
07:03maybe you
07:05had this
07:05in 10th grade,
07:07the lifeboat
07:08story.
07:09And in the
07:10lifeboat story,
07:12which was
07:14offered by
07:15a guy named
07:16Garrett Hardin,
07:17who wrote
07:18The Tragedy
07:19of the Commons,
07:22he offers
07:24an ethics
07:24question,
07:26what I would
07:27consider to be
07:28a very cruel
07:29ethics question.
07:30And the ethics
07:32question that he
07:33gives is,
07:34imagine that
07:36you're on a
07:37lifeboat
07:38that has
07:3950 seats
07:40and there's
07:41100 people
07:42in the water.
07:43How will you
07:45choose who
07:46is saved?
07:49this is a
07:50horrible
07:51question,
07:52horrifying
07:53question.
07:56And I
07:57want you
07:57to know
07:58that Garrett
07:59Hardin was
08:00a card-carrying
08:02eugenicist.
08:03This is a
08:04eugenics
08:05question.
08:06Because what
08:08happens
08:08is that whether

08:11university or
08:12in 10th grade,

08:15or the people
08:16in the room

08:17think of
08:18criteria.

09:06impossible
09:07complexity of
09:09every living

09:12is a hundred
09:13people,
09:14not a hundred
09:15floating numbers.
09:17And every
09:18one of those
09:19people has
09:20a history,
09:21has a life,
09:23has experience,
09:24has stories.
09:27And if it's
09:28all of us
09:28and we're
09:29going to try
09:29to figure out
09:30how to get
09:31on lifeboats,
09:32I'm not
09:32leaving you
09:33behind.
