Less than a year ago, Texas Governor Greg Abbott hailed Texas as the "epicenter of AI development." Now, in his bid for re-election, he is calling for sweeping new restrictions on data centers. Across the country, as Democrats ride a wave of local opposition to data centers ahead of the November elections, Republicans are increasingly breaking from U.S. President Donald Trump’s pro-AI agenda. - REUTERS

00:00What politicians and consumers are increasingly realizing is that data centers don't bring a lot of jobs to a local
00:08community.
00:09I think that this shift is notable because it is both because of campaign season, but you're also seeing a
00:19critical mass of consumers really complaining about this.
00:24Homeowners, local businesses, seeing their electric bills and water bills go up because of data centers that were built in
00:33their hometowns or data centers that are coming that they're worried about the effects of them.
00:38And in Texas, where Paxton and Abbott, the governor, have said they're taking a new look at it, you're seeing
00:48both that this is affecting them in the polls and the election, but also you're seeing more education in general
00:56about the issue and more reasons why Republicans may not fully embrace this like they had been.
01:04It's concerning to many in the administration who want to see America beat China in the AI race.
01:13So you have this balance where politicians are trying to figure out how to strike the balance between between ensuring
01:21that America is competitive and and addressing the concerns of consumers.
01:27This is a sea change for big tech.
01:30It's a wake up call to that industry.
01:33And you're seeing not just socialist Democrats.
01:37I mean, you're seeing Greg Abbott in Texas, the Texas Republican governor, very conservative governor.
01:45And his views on data centers are more in line with Bernie Sanders and AOC than they are with Trump
01:55in the White House.
01:56And so you're seeing a sea change for this industry where they're going to have to pause.
02:03They're going to have to take a look.
02:05They're going to have to spend more resources, not just in lobbying politicians, but in actually giving money back to
02:14communities.
