00:11EU officials downplayed the fallout from Iceland's referendum defeat as they met in Dublin to discuss the enagement process.
00:20U.S. President Donald Trump said on Thursday he would ask European countries to repay American aid provided to Ukraine
00:26under former President Joe Biden.
00:30German car giant Volkswagen has announced that management and unions have agreed to cut a total of 100,000 jobs
00:37by the end of the decade.
00:40Britain has reaffirmed its absolute and unshakable commitment to the Falkland Islands after Argentine President Javier Mille renewed Argentina's claim
00:47to the territory.
00:51Senior EU officials have issued a warning to the Serbian government over the funeral of war criminal Radko Mladic
00:59with the bloc's enlargement chief saying that it will be a very important test in Belgrade's bid to join the
01:05European Union and its future path.
01:08European Commissioner for Enlargement Marta Koss said that the handling of Mladic's funeral will be considered in relation to Belgrade's
01:16alignment with the EU's foreign and security policy,
01:19a key requisite for joining the bloc.
01:22Ireland, which currently holds the six-month EU presidency, is moving in the same direction.
01:27A state funeral would be unacceptable.
01:30As I understand it, there's not actually a state funeral taking place, but there may well be senior figures from
01:36government memorializing that man.
01:38So that's not acceptable.
01:41Mladic died on August the 27th, aged 84, in a UN detention facility in The Hague,
01:48where he was serving a lifetime sentence for crimes against humanity related to the Srebrenica massacre and the siege of
01:55Sarajevo.
01:57His body was returned to Serbia in a government plane on Thursday with his coffin carried by soldiers
02:03and wrapped in a Serbian flag shown in images broadcasted on television.
02:14EU officials downplayed the fallout from Iceland's referendum defeat as Brussels tried to keep the momentum for enlargement alive at
02:22a high-level meeting in Dublin.
02:24European affairs ministers from EU member states and candidate countries met in Dublin to discuss the enlargement process in the
02:32wake of Iceland's vote.
02:33On Saturday, Icelandic voters rejected reopening accession talks with Brussels, frozen since 2013 by 52.8%.
02:42I regret the decision of the Icelanders not to come back to the accession process.
02:49Why? Mostly because they are part of the common market.
02:55What they say, they are part of Schengen.
02:57But our European Union is much, much more than just those two things.
03:04The EU commissioner said the result doesn't mean the EU has become less attractive.
03:09This Irish minister pointed to the progress made by Montenegro, Albania, Moldova and Ukraine.
03:15The Icelandic people voted the way they did.
03:18What can we do? They made the decision.
03:21I think there was a very specific issue there in Iceland, which was obviously the issue of the marine industry
03:26fishing.
03:26That has no impact on what we're doing today.
03:29The candidate countries are working hard to continue the accession process.
03:33Contenegro is on track to become the bloc's 28th member by 2028, and Albania is following closely behind.
03:44Two senior officials resigned from Nigel Farage's far-right Reform UK on Friday,
03:50after the party was reported to the police over illegal donations.
03:54It follows an undercover investigation aired by Britain's Channel 4 News
03:59that alleged they had conspired to secure a foreign donation, barred under UK electoral law.
04:05Reform said in a statement that James Orr and Dan Jukes had stepped down from their roles pending the outcome
04:11of an internal probe.
04:13The ruling Labour Party was among rival parties to say they had reported reform to police
04:18over claims it took funding from a U.S. firm for three opinion polls it commissioned earlier this year.
04:23But the purported donors were in fact undercover reporters for investigative journalism group Verbatim.
04:30The allegations land just as Reform opens its annual conference in Birmingham,
04:35where Farage is seeking to reassert his authority after a difficult summer
04:39that has seen the party slip behind Labour in the polls.
04:44Reform UK is also under investigation over a £5 million donation
04:48from British cryptocurrency billionaire Christopher Harbourn to Farage,
04:53who said the money was for his security.
05:00Ukraine's finance minister Sergei Marshenko has warned that the country may have to cut non-military spending
05:06unless it can secure funding from its allies.
05:10Marshenko told Euronews program Europe Today that Ukraine had not faced such a tight budget situation
05:17since the start of the full-scale invasion in 2022.
05:21When asked about whether this would affect external creditors,
05:25he said the impact could be felt at local level.
05:28It's only related for some expenditure which is very necessary.
05:33For example, some capital expenditure to build shelters, construction, etc.
05:38in the local levels and central levels.
05:40But it's very important to prepare for the winter.
05:44That's why if we realise that we have not sufficient money in our accounts for military,
05:49it means that we should postpone other payments until we have sufficient liquidity.
05:54Marshenko said he's working on a new budget on the assumption that the war will continue into 2027
06:01with an estimated funding shortfall of 32.6 billion euros to be covered.
06:07Ukraine's finance minister urged the EU to consider a new Ukrainian plan
06:12to tap into approximately 300 billion dollars of frozen Russian assets.
06:17The plan was rejected by EU ministers last December
06:21as they struggled to bridge their differences with a 90 billion euros loan,
06:26jointly financed, decided instead.
06:33U.S. President Donald Trump said on Thursday he would ask European countries to repay American aid
06:39provided to Ukraine under former President Joe Biden.
06:42Trump has long demanded that Europe shoulder more of the cost of Western support for Ukraine,
06:48but he did not specify which countries he expected to pay.
06:52He also rejected reports that U.S. forces were running low on ammunition amid the war with Iran,
06:58saying Washington was building up its own stockpiles
07:01and had temporarily suspended some overseas arms sales.
07:06Meanwhile, the World Health Organization said one of its main warehouses in Ukraine
07:10was damaged in an overnight air attack in Kiev Oblast.
07:13Between three and four.
07:15No WHO personnel were affected,
07:16but damage assessment and inventory of lost supplies were ongoing.
07:21The organization said three warehouses it used in different parts of Ukraine
07:25had been damaged by airstrikes over the past three months
07:28as attacks on humanitarian facilities continued.
07:32At least 20 attacks have affected warehouses.
07:38For much of the war, Russian drone and missile attacks on the Ukraine capital, Kiev,
07:43followed a particular rhythm.
07:45They almost always came at night.
07:47Now, Russia has changed tactics with the use of fast-flying jet-powered drones,
07:53and the expectation that daylight brings a return to normal life has been shattered.
07:58In Kiev, the recurring wail of air-red sirens has become part of daily life.
08:03It has interrupted commutes, shopping trips and children's schools,
08:08intruded on life's biggest moments, from weddings to funerals,
08:12and, as these attacks always have, taken lives.
08:15Meanwhile, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said on Thursday night
08:19he hoped to host U.S. President Donald Trump's envoys in Kiev in the coming days
08:24to resume efforts to end the war.
08:26Diplomatic push to end Russia's four-and-a-half-year invasion
08:30has stalled in recent months
08:32as the United States has shifted its focus towards the war with Iran.
08:43German car giant Volkswagen has announced that management and unions
08:47have agreed to cut a total of 100,000 jobs by the end of the decade.
08:52This includes a reduction of around 50,000 jobs
08:56on top of another 50,000 already agreed.
08:59Hit by U.S. tariffs, patchy demand for electric cars,
09:03and above all, fierce competition in and from China,
09:06Europe's largest carmaker is in trouble.
09:10The total 100,000 cuts will be the largest restructuring
09:14ever carried out in the global automotive industry,
09:17amounting to about 15% of the carmaker's staff worldwide.
09:22Volkswagen further said that management and unions agreed
09:25the future of four German plants could not be assured into the 2030s.
09:31Their closure would mark the first time Volkswagen
09:34has shuttered full-skill factories in its home country.
09:41Britain has reaffirmed its absolute and unshakable commitment
09:44to the Falkland Islands after Argentine President Javier Mille
09:48renewed Argentina's claim to the territory.
09:50British Defense Secretary Westry Ting said the Falklands were British
09:54because their residents choose to be British,
09:57adding that Mille's comments said more about domestic politics in Argentina.
10:01Mille said winds of change were favoring Argentina's cause
10:05after U.S. President Donald Trump suggested
10:07Washington could reconsider its position on the islands.
10:10Mille also announced new sanctions targeting oil companies
10:14operating off the Falklands, which he described as being under British occupation.
10:19The dispute has remained highly sensitive since Argentina invaded the islands in 1982,
10:24triggering a 10-week war that ended with Argentine surrender.
10:28In a 2013 referendum, Falkland Islanders voted overwhelmingly to remain British,
10:34with more than 99% in favor.
10:42Rescuers in Nepal pulled two workers alive from a hydropower tunnel on Friday,
10:47nine days after they were trapped following last week's catastrophic floods.
10:51Officials say emergency teams continued an operation to reach others believed to still be trapped inside.
10:57The two men were aged 30 and 45,
11:01one was a mechanical supervisor and the other a foreman at the plant.
11:05Officials said both men were transferred to nearby hospitals to receive treatment.
11:10At least 557 workers are missing from the Trishuli 3A hydropower project along the Trishuli River,
11:17with about 115 believed to be trapped in the main tunnel.
11:21Officials present at the rescue site said rescuers believe some people may still be alive inside.
11:27The floods in Nepal have killed more than 1,250 people,
11:31but authorities fear the death toll will significantly rise as more than 5,000 people remain missing.
