00:00МУЗЫКАЛЬНАЯ ЗАСТАВКА
00:40Round 10 of the season brings us to the Temple of Speed.
00:4545 minutes, as always, to get used to the circuit once again
00:49with practice and get bedded in after the summer break.
00:54We would see some near misses.
00:56Rafa Kamara amongst that, going wide at the Sky Chicane.
01:00We would have a big incident coming out of Lesmo 2.
01:04Colton Herta spinning, going into the barriers.
01:07That would bring an early end to the session with Alex Dunn,
01:10fastest for road in motorsport,
01:12by just under two-tenths ahead of Oli Gertha.
01:15Nico Verone, the best of the rest, half a second back in P3.
01:20Now we roll into qualifying this to set the grid for both your sprint race
01:25and your feature race.
01:26We reverse the top ten from qualifying in the sprint race tomorrow.
01:31Two points will go to the driver who takes the Aramco pole position,
01:36and there you can see a look at the circuit.
01:39One change to it is that we will now have an additional DRS zone
01:43between the Ascari Chicane and Parabolica last year.
01:47It was an Italian on the top step in Leo Fornaroli in the sprint race.
01:52Luke Barroning converted from pole position to win the feature race.
01:56One of just two drivers to do that on our nine visits so far,
02:01and this visit ten here to Monza.
02:05What a weekend we have ahead.
02:06My name is Chris McCarthy.
02:07Alex Brundle alongside me.
02:08Alex, one of the trickiest ones in terms of qualifying, isn't it?
02:12If you can get a good toe, it can make all the difference around here.
02:16It's all about what everybody else chooses to do,
02:19and then using the hole in the air made by the rest of the field
02:22to try to maximise your qualifying time.
02:25On the super soft tyre, not a high degradation circuit.
02:28They've got a lot of wiggle room in terms of when they run
02:31and exactly how.
02:34Relatively short lap in terms of time.
02:36Pretty long in terms of distance here in Monza.
02:40High average speed.
02:42But a toe worth so much to these drivers, Chris.
02:45And they'll be looking to try to achieve that if they possibly can.
02:53Drivers sitting in the pit lane, looking at each other.
02:56The lights have gone green at the end of the pit lane.
02:59But we so often see this, just the field with nobody wanting to get left behind
03:05without the opportunity for a toe.
03:07Although, it should be said, you have seen drivers in the past set lap times
03:11good enough for pole position all on their own here in Monza.
03:15So we'll see what strategies they choose to employ.
03:18See the purple sideboard super soft tyres on the cars.
03:21Once again, like last season, it will be the soft and the super soft.
03:25Our last winner back at the Hungarian was Noel Lyons.
03:29It's P5 in the championship now.
03:32Not far back from Alekstan.
03:34In terms of your top three, just 22 points sit between Nikola Solov,
03:39Gabriele Mini, the Italian, and Rafa Kammerer in third.
03:42So it is getting close as we approach the business end of the championship.
03:47And this will be an important weekend.
03:49A threatening weekend for drivers who normally perform well in the series.
03:54We talk about qualifying and its importance.
03:56The feature race here has been won from the absolute rear of the field by Gabriele Bortoletto.
04:02So they all know that this is an important session.
04:05They all know they need to put themselves in the right position.
04:08But the day in Monza very much is race day.
04:12That being said, it's one of the most perilous first corners anywhere in a Formula 2 campaign.
04:19If you're in the middle of the pack here, there's a good likelihood that you're going to need the clutch
04:24down towards turn one,
04:26such as the concertina effect in the races.
04:29So it's still helpful to keep yourself out of trouble to be up front.
04:33Absolutely is.
04:34We can see Emerson Fittipaldi, new livery for the AIX racing team this weekend.
04:40See what Fittipaldi can go and do around this circuit.
04:45Nicholas Solov, the Red Bull junior, leading the way in the championship so far.
04:51Well, we've just been talking qualifying strategy ourself.
04:54Let's hear what the championship leader, Nicholas Solov, had to say about that coming into the weekend.
05:02It's all about finding the toll, but you also have other stuff to manage, such as tire warm-up and
05:07brakes,
05:07especially in F2, because if your brakes don't work, it's pointless getting a toll.
05:12So I think it will be important to kind of put all factors together, which is the hard part.
05:18Then obviously if it gets too messy, you can't be risking a toll.
05:23So it's difficult to tell you how it's going to plan out from now,
05:26but let's see how the session unfolds.
05:28I think it's going to be quite cardiac.
05:32So warming up tires and brakes as well.
05:36It's so easy for a lap to go wrong at that very first corner.
05:40You're flying up.
05:40Yeah, you've got to get the brakes ready.
05:42Carbon ceramic brakes in Formula 2.
05:45If they don't have enough temperature, they'll simply switch off
05:47and won't work for you in that first big braking zone.
05:51It is relatively warm today.
05:52We saw Nikola Solov, they're cuddling the dry ice, basically.
05:5756 degrees of track temperature, 32 degrees in the air.
06:01So that'll be helping them in their plight to get temperature
06:04through those front brakes and front tires.
06:06But they don't have a lot of corners to play with on the out lap.
06:09Corners are generally helpful because, you know, it's a braking effort.
06:12You can put through the brakes, and then you can turn and put some load
06:15through the car on the build-up lap.
06:18But here, you've really got to do a lot of that work on the straights.
06:22Most effective is the brake pedal.
06:24For that, you not only get brake temperature, brake rotors, of course,
06:27sitting inside the wheel and the tire in terms of the disc,
06:32so that temperature will bleed through.
06:35But it also puts nice energy through the tire
06:39and compresses the sidewall of the tire as you brake,
06:42which is the beneficial route because a lot of the heat,
06:45most of the heat in a tire comes from that compressing force of it
06:50rolling and bouncing over the surface of the track
06:53rather than scrubbing across the road,
06:56which is the negative way, I would say, to heat a tire.
06:58Yeah, technically very hard, mentally very challenging as well
07:02because you get a lot of time to think about things around here,
07:05a lot of time to think about the mistake you might have just made
07:07or one that you could make coming into the next corner.
07:10It's pick a braking point, isn't it?
07:12A very binary decision from the drivers
07:15where they don't get really a second chance.
07:17You've got to hit the brake pedal with a lot of force.
07:20They've got a lot of downforce on
07:21as they approach just past 150 metres to the aretophilial chicane.
07:28And at the beginning of each of these critical qualifying laps,
07:31you've got to go down there with brakes,
07:33not at the optimum temperature, as Nikola Solov was describing.
07:37Maybe with a car in front of you, maybe not.
07:40With a variable fuel load
07:42and make a decision about where you're going to brake.
07:45It is so hard to do, particularly under pressure.
07:48It really is, and we've already seen signs of that
07:52in the Formula 3 qualifying session.
07:54We won't spoil the result for you in that one,
07:57but we did see in that the tow was very effective.
08:01Rafa Kamrat just watching from pit lane
08:03had a very good drive from the back of the grid
08:05in Formula 3 here last year.
08:08Off a run of decent finishes, Kamrat,
08:11with a feature race victory from Pohl in Spa,
08:15another podium in the Hungara in driver's seat.
08:17It's third in the championship,
08:20still within touching distance very much of Gabriele Mini,
08:23a couple of points in it,
08:23but also of the lead of the series with Nikola Solov
08:2620 points further up the road from Mini.
08:30So all to play for.
08:32Out of the pitch then in these little gaggles,
08:35and you can see the two high-techs there
08:37being released together.
08:39Yep, saw Colton hurt a disappointing day for him so far.
08:44He had that crash,
08:45and then his free practice one appearance with Cadillac
08:48came to an early end as well.
08:51So he'll have to try and now put that all to one side
08:54and come out and really attack this qualifying session.
08:57But he had that off at Lesmo 2,
09:01so putting him on the back foot coming into the weekend.
09:03Good to see them get the car back out there
09:05because there was quite considerable damage,
09:07wasn't there,
09:08to that high-tech.
09:11Lower downforce rear wings are on the Formula 2 car.
09:16We see them sometimes at Spa,
09:17sometimes in Baku.
09:20But, yeah,
09:21they're seeing them definitely here in Monza.
09:23And releasing the downforce off these cars
09:26often uncovers balance problems
09:29that the drivers don't see for the rest of the year.
09:31Downforce, magical stuff in racing.
09:33You can paint it over the top of quite a lot of evils,
09:36and it'll cure them.
09:38But when you take the downforce off in Monza,
09:40all of a sudden the car starts doing things
09:42in the middle of the corner
09:43that it doesn't do anywhere else.
09:45It might have done,
09:47but the downforce had covered it.
09:49Yeah, and two very different tracks
09:51that we've gone from one to the other
09:53in the Hungar ring
09:54and now here to Monza,
09:55and then it'll be a first trip to Madrid next weekend
09:59as everyone's gone out for an outlap
10:01and brought it back in again.
10:03So is that just a case?
10:05Do you think of just taking some surface off those tyres?
10:08Building a little bit of temperature, maybe,
10:10and just managing the car,
10:14but maybe hoping to get a little bit of a tow,
10:18but not achieving it.
10:20Milly will be hoping for a good session.
10:23Let's see what the Italian driver had to say about qualifying
10:25coming into the weekend.
10:29It will be quite a lot about the track position.
10:32We know that the slipstream can play a very big effect.
10:35We're talking about from three to five tenths per lap
10:37if you take a very good one.
10:40And so, yeah, it will be all about that.
10:42And then, of course, doing the lap when it matters.
10:43We know that it's most likely going to be chaotic,
10:46so we see many cars, you know, going slow
10:48to try and have a tow, have a slipstream.
10:52So we can expect a bit of everything,
10:54and even for the races,
10:55but for sure the trickiest part will be qualifying,
10:58and we'll just see how the situation evolves.
11:01We are not the first on the pit lane,
11:02so we don't have to wait for everyone.
11:04So, yeah, it's a bit...
11:06It can be both good and bad,
11:08but we'll see how it will evolve.
11:12Qualifying has sometimes been a bit of an issue
11:15for Gabriele Mini in terms of getting that peak result.
11:18Yet to take a pole position.
11:20He's at best result, third place at Baku last year.
11:24So we want to try and get over the line
11:25and get a Formula 2 pole position.
11:28It's a tough thing to do
11:29and builds the rest of your weekend.
11:33Each of these qualifying sessions,
11:35so short in duration,
11:37they have to decide what their strategy is going to be.
11:39So early before the session
11:42because they're locked in on the fuel load.
11:44And then it is all down to the driver to deliver.
11:47We've seen a lot of truncated qualifying sessions
11:49throughout the year.
11:50We've seen a truncated free practice here as well
11:53with the incident for Colton Hurter.
11:55Alex Dunn was the fastest driver in that session,
11:58but plenty of laps there left on the table, Chris,
12:01and perhaps a couple of drivers coming in
12:03to this quali session,
12:05not with all of the experience and knowledge
12:08that they might want.
12:09Yeah, absolutely.
12:09He did lose them some track time, didn't it?
12:11Around 15 minutes.
12:12Alex Dunn is going to take us on a first flying lap then
12:15as we see him come into the first corner.
12:17Oh, and dropped the rear of the road
12:20in through the middle of that first apex.
12:22Tiny little lock-up as he made his way in.
12:24He's going to roll the car through Curva Grande.
12:27So Dunn has decided he's going to get a banker on the table,
12:31and this is insurance against the end of this qualifying session
12:34being so difficult with traffic that basically nobody gets a lap in.
12:40And I would say it's a premium worth paying.
12:43Absolutely.
12:43So I couldn't agree more there.
12:45This is just going to take that pressure off
12:48so he really can go and take even more risks come that flying lap later.
12:53Out of Lesmo 2, that looked nice and clean,
12:55and now the run begins down to Ascari.
12:58Yeah, absolutely nothing in front of him.
13:00An underestimated dip underneath the old banking
13:04and then a really blind entry to the Ascari chicane.
13:08That's a big lock-up, and he did...
13:09I was thinking he'd done well to recover that one,
13:12but that's because he didn't.
13:12Across the mid-corner of the Ascari chicane,
13:15and unfortunately, he's thrown that banker in the bin.
13:18Yeah, the gravel trap.
13:19He found himself in in the feature race last season,
13:22albeit with a helping hand from one Alpine junior to another.
13:25There's Kursh Maini looking to try and take back-to-back pole position,
13:29and Intra Puvezak in the background,
13:31just dropping a wheel on the exit of Lesmo 2.
13:33Green sectors for everyone as they are making their way through.
13:37DRS open for camera.
13:39Is there going to be gravel on the track
13:40through the exit of the Ascari chicane?
13:42Looks like there's not too much,
13:44so they're going to be able to complete this first round of flyers.
13:47Done across the line, a 1.42,
13:49but we saw that trip through the gravel, of course.
13:52Noel Leon looking very quick.
13:54Joshua Dirksen has just done a very good first sector as well,
13:58fastest of anyone through there.
14:00Here's his teammate, Rafa Kammerer,
14:01making his way up to the line,
14:03and he's going to grab a toe as well
14:05from one of the Alpine juniors ahead of Kursh Maini,
14:08and he will go to the top of the times.
14:101.31.9.
14:12Let's jump back with Noel Leon now
14:14to see what he can do as he heads up to the line.
14:16He'll be getting a hint of a toe as well,
14:18and that'll help him to the top.
14:21200s quicker than Rafa Kammerer.
14:23It was a double toe for Leon.
14:24I thought it was a nice one for Kammerer too.
14:26Let's see what Dirksen can do.
14:27Two purple sectors so far,
14:29and there is a hole in the air in front of him,
14:31and Dirksen goes top in the Invicta.
14:33Nice placement on the circuit there
14:36from both the Invicta drivers and Joshua Dirksen
14:39at the back of this queue going fastest overall.
14:431.31.7.
14:45James Robinson talking about how he has the pace.
14:48Dirksen just needs the fortune to go with it.
14:51Big lock-up from Villa Gomez.
14:53Inside rear lock-up from Villa Gomez
14:56on his way down to the first chicane.
14:58This is Alex Dunn.
14:59We are following on board,
15:00and that is just brakes that are too cold
15:02on their way to the Ascari chicane,
15:05and they turn up, gather temperature,
15:08and then the temperature spikes,
15:10and they lock.
15:11Difficult moment for Alex Dunn.
15:13Sometimes deleted.
15:14Unsurprisingly, one of them being Alex Dunn's air
15:17who went off the circuit.
15:18But the other ones to note, Bennett and Verone.
15:21We saw what happened with Villa Gomez.
15:24So take two for the Irishman.
15:27Across the line, he comes now.
15:28That looked like a cool lap to me.
15:3037 for Dunn.
15:31So he looks to sort of maintain tyre temperature.
15:34And he's going to have to go again using fuel,
15:36which is going to give him less wiggle room later
15:39as to when he runs.
15:40Looked deep again, didn't he?
15:41Down towards turn one.
15:43And I wonder if he's going to be reporting
15:44the brakes are not working for him
15:46as nicely as he's expecting,
15:48because it looks so difficult to stop that road in.
15:51Yeah, he's really struggling, isn't he?
15:53Out there, up to the Roger chicane next,
15:55and four tenths off already through the first sector,
15:58and he's bailed from the lap.
15:59No surprise.
15:59Going to need another set of tyres, guys.
16:01And it's not good news, is it, for Alex Dunn.
16:04I wonder if they'll throw some blanking on that car
16:07so they can chuck some tape over the brake ducts
16:10to manage the amount of temperature
16:13that the brakes are producing.
16:19He just didn't have the deceleration, didn't it?
16:23Down towards turn one.
16:25Trying to commit the car very late.
16:28It looked like he was on the team radio straight away after that
16:31just to report what had happened,
16:33and I think you could be right in your assumptions there as well.
16:36All right, following his teammate, Martini Estenchon now.
16:40Into the Roger chicane.
16:41Got to be so accurate.
16:43That second kerb tends to do exactly that.
16:45Throw the rear across the road.
16:46Estenchon's got a car up ahead of him.
16:49Useful for a tow, but not very useful
16:51through this middle sector of the lap.
16:53The two Lesmos requiring the front end.
16:55Decent lap so far for Estenchon.
16:57Better lap from camera.
16:58He's purple in the first sector.
16:5929.3 for him through the first sector.
17:02A good first sector, likewise,
17:04for Gabriele Mini and also Noel Leon.
17:0729.4s for them.
17:09Fastest through the second sector, Martini Estenchon,
17:11if he can get a good exit out of here,
17:14he could get a tow down towards Parabolica
17:16and up to the start and finish line.
17:18It looks like that could be the case
17:19as he heads to the final corner.
17:21At least a couple of laps here in the tyre then,
17:23and this is the way that it tends to be in Monza.
17:25Fabulous shot as they make their way down
17:28into the famous final corner of the lap.
17:30Let's see what they've got across the line, Chris.
17:32Martini Estenchon in that black and white road,
17:34and he's had some really good performances in qualifying.
17:37What can he do here as he heads up to the line?
17:39P4 for him.
17:40Dino Beganovic behind going to P6.
17:43What about Rafa Kamara then?
17:45He is in that yellow Invicta up to the line,
17:47and he's fastest by almost four-tenths of a second.
17:50Noel Leon splitting the two Invictas,
17:53but there's some pace in that Invicta
17:55as we now hop on board with championship leader Solov.
17:57What can Solov do?
17:58Look neat down to the apex of the Parabolica
18:01and in the power nice and early.
18:03He's going to drive the shortest distance to the line
18:06under the bridge is where the time turns up,
18:08and it's only fourth for Solov.
18:10So the two Invictas and the two Campos,
18:13one, two, three, and four.
18:15Fittipaldi making a nice improvement up to P14, he goes.
18:19The best of the rest is MP Motorsport.
18:21They have P5 with Gertha, P6 with Mini,
18:24then it's Bennett, Stenshawn,
18:26and the front row for the sprint race,
18:28if the chequered flag were to wave now,
18:29would be Roman Belinsky and Dino Viganovich.
18:33Interesting to see what they choose to do now.
18:36Remarkable generosity going on out on track
18:40with the toes being given out at this stage of the session.
18:44I'm going to eat those words, I'm pretty sure,
18:47towards the end.
18:50But sensible stuff, it must be said, so far,
18:53with Camara taking really good advantage
18:56of a couple of laps of nice toes across the line.
19:01Yeah, and we can see Alex Dunn.
19:03We talked about him going for a banker lap.
19:06He's had two failed attempts at doing that so far.
19:09So he currently is at the very back of the field,
19:13six seconds off Rafa Camara.
19:16So he's pitted and come back out again.
19:17I wonder if he said to the team,
19:19we need to change something with these braids.
19:22And they've said yes,
19:23but you also need to go out there
19:26and deliver a banker lap,
19:28just in case, as happened in qualifying,
19:30this session gets ended early.
19:32We need you up in the top 10,
19:35in the reverse grid, at least at this stage.
19:38Otherwise, you're going to be in trouble.
19:40Yeah, and his DRS is open.
19:42He's definitely going for this, isn't he?
19:44Rafa Camara has stayed out once again.
19:46DRS open for him.
19:48Down to Reta Filoške.
19:49Yeah, Camara staying out.
19:5112 minutes left on the clock.
19:54It's a one minute 30 lap,
19:55so they've still got plenty of time to get in,
19:57change the tyres and get back out again.
20:00And in many ways here for Dunn,
20:01the tow would be more important than the tyre.
20:04You can tell by the vibration through the car
20:06he's on that same set of tyres
20:08because he flat spotted them earlier on
20:10and Camara's having none of giving the Irishman a tow.
20:14Absolutely so.
20:15I wonder if it's a fuel thing for Camara staying out.
20:17That looked good through the Roger chicane.
20:19So, so far, so good.
20:21It seems, from what we can see from a distance,
20:24if he did have anything with the brakes,
20:26all is fixed.
20:27But coming up to Ascari next,
20:30once we get a clean exit from here,
20:31which we do.
20:32The glow tells you everything you need to know,
20:34doesn't it?
20:34Down through the second of the Lesmos.
20:37Now he's got a little bit more temperature.
20:39It is a better first sector than he's achieved before.
20:43And he's only 900s off what Camara's done so far this session.
20:47So, Dunn recovering this nicely.
20:49This is looking very quick.
20:51Now the run begins down to Parabolica.
20:54He'll be punching his own hole in the air.
20:57We'll see what difference that makes
20:58in terms of time to Camara,
21:01Leon and Dirksen into the final corner.
21:04We go on board with Alex Dunn.
21:06Will this be good enough to put him
21:07to the top of the times
21:09as he makes his way to the start-finish line?
21:12Now he can only move forwards
21:14and he goes to P4 for the time being.
21:17Given the age of his tyres,
21:19that's a pretty good lap.
21:19Yeah, the rest of them will be looking at that
21:21and thinking, hmm, four laps in on a tyre.
21:25And then with the other difficulties as well,
21:29Dunn is going to be one to watch
21:30for the rest of this session.
21:32There was a little toe from Camara
21:34at the beginning of the lap.
21:35He soon got out of the way.
21:36But you've got to remember,
21:37the Invicta driver also had a toe across the line.
21:40So let's see what they can do with Dunn now
21:42and see how far he is out of sequence
21:44with everybody else
21:45and how much that little error has affected
21:47the rest of his qualifying session.
21:48And we can see the heat off the brakes
21:51from Rafa Camara there.
21:53Now there are some laps being deleted.
21:55Van Hoopen has just had a lap deleted.
21:59Likewise in Chapuvasak,
22:00so they dropped to the back
22:01and this is coming out of the first chicane,
22:04out of the Retafilo chicane,
22:05we're seeing track limits being met.
22:07Yeah, it can be drivers going across
22:11the middle of the chicane, of course,
22:13and losing their lap,
22:15but it can also be on the exit kerb
22:20if they run too wide.
22:22Martin Estential is still out there
22:23getting his lap in.
22:26Let's see if he chooses to conclude this one.
22:29It isn't better in either of the sectors
22:31than his previous effort.
22:33And with that, he's going to come into pit lane,
22:36so that's a bit of a late half-time, isn't it,
22:39for this session.
22:4020 minutes in, just under 10 to go.
22:43Championship leader, Solov P5,
22:45for the time being,
22:46but I have a feeling this is going to get
22:48a lot closer
22:50going into this last 10 minutes.
22:52So the rotation of the tyre
22:54that you saw for camera there,
22:56really interesting.
22:57That is the mechanic there,
22:59effectively fanning the brake with the spokes.
23:01And that's how much temperature
23:03they're having to get through the front axle.
23:05So once it's finished going through the air
23:08for 25 seconds,
23:09from the Parabolica down
23:11to the Retafilo chicane,
23:13it's still,
23:14the brakes still work
23:15when they get down there.
23:17So they're having to toast up
23:18the front brakes.
23:21But obviously what you don't want to do
23:22is go over the limit
23:23to the point where
23:25when you've done a flat-out lap after that,
23:27you end up getting brake fade at the end
23:29or indeed blowing up the front tyre,
23:32which will be affected in its temperature
23:34by the end of the lap.
23:36So difficult balance to strike.
23:38And again, Nikola Solov gave us loads of information
23:41in his interview at the beginning.
23:43If your brakes don't work,
23:45it doesn't matter how good a toe you get,
23:47you're finished.
23:47Yeah, and the temperature is rising
23:51in all areas out there, isn't it?
23:5357 degrees track temperature now.
23:55It's a guess as well, isn't it?
23:57Because you're going to get a lot less airflow
23:59through those brakes
24:00if you're running in traffic
24:01in comparison to
24:03if you're running in clean air.
24:04So you look at Alex Dunn
24:05running in clean air on his own
24:08and one could argue
24:09that the expectation of brake ducting
24:11would be that he would get less airflow
24:13than based around practice.
24:15But he's run on his own
24:17and therefore probably got a little bit more
24:18and as such ended up
24:20with cold brakes through the lap.
24:22Well, it's a huge amount
24:24that goes in to this lap.
24:26It may look a bit more of a simple one
24:29on the face of it,
24:30but those braking zones
24:32have a huge effect on your lap.
24:35Ask anyone in IndyCar,
24:39NASCAR or any other oval formula
24:41and they will tell you circuits
24:43that appear simple
24:44have the greatest depth
24:46because the margins become tiny.
24:49Every single thing you do
24:51to these cars around a circuit like this
24:54when you're looking at a 31.3
24:56to take pole position,
24:5832.3 puts you 13th at the moment
25:02and outside of even the reverse grid.
25:04That's the difference
25:06between good and great
25:08around a circuit like Monza.
25:09One of the original racetracks, Chris,
25:12in the Formula One calendar
25:13was part of the first ever
25:15world championship in 1950.
25:17Lots of history to the circuit,
25:20isn't there?
25:20And a racetrack we've been coming to
25:22in the modern era of Formula Two
25:25from the very beginning in 2017.
25:28This is our 10th visit
25:30to the Temple of Speed.
25:32Lots of memories made.
25:33You mentioned about a driver,
25:35a champion who came from last to first
25:38and there's been some really big
25:40races around here.
25:41It's always exciting, isn't it?
25:43The circuit where we know
25:47it's not over
25:48until the very final minutes
25:50of race day.
25:53And drivers are always excited
25:54to come racing at you.
25:56Just going so fast
25:57for so long
25:59around Monza
26:01and something incredibly
26:03satisfying to it.
26:05It's the fettuccine bolognese
26:07of racetracks.
26:07It really is.
26:08Simple but fantastic.
26:11Absolutely so.
26:12Great summary of it
26:13as they're all now heading back out.
26:16But the last few
26:17just waiting for them
26:18to come down.
26:19But this is going to be
26:21a bit more of a sprint.
26:22It's part of qualifying,
26:23isn't it?
26:23Everyone's decided to go out
26:25in the same five,
26:26six minutes.
26:27So we might see it
26:28get a little bit more bunched up
26:30in this part of qualifying.
26:32We've had the bank of laps in
26:34and now we will start
26:35to see drivers
26:36really push the limits.
26:37What's the plan here?
26:38I can see Rafa Camera,
26:40one of the last drivers
26:43out of the pit lane here.
26:46We're following Noel Leon then
26:48and look how tight it is
26:49down into the Roger chicane.
26:50It really is Noel Leon,
26:53the Campos racing driver
26:54who lead the team's championship
26:56quite comfortably.
26:56Let's hear what he has to say
26:57about that coming into the weekend.
27:01It's very important for me
27:02to be part of this amazing year
27:04of the team
27:05to give them
27:06the constructive championship.
27:08You know,
27:08even in the driver championship,
27:10they are fighting
27:11and I'm still not far from them.
27:13So we'll keep pushing
27:15to go for it.
27:17I think so.
27:17We don't need to
27:18very looking into the championship,
27:20just going race by race
27:22and it will come naturally.
27:24So yeah,
27:25very happy with all the progress
27:26and we'll keep working.
27:29Starting to get busy out there,
27:30isn't it?
27:31We have a look at Noel Leon now
27:32and this is where the game
27:34starts to begin.
27:35Really feisty.
27:36The driver who won
27:37the last feature race
27:39in Hungaroring.
27:40We're just going to go
27:41and go with them.
27:42If they drive through,
27:43we drive through.
27:43We have time for that.
27:46Let the games begin.
27:47As you mentioned,
27:49this is it,
27:50the final qualifying lap
27:51in Monza.
27:52Who is going to be
27:54the driver
27:55who is forced
27:55to dish out the tow
27:58to the rest of the field?
27:59Is anybody going to take
28:00a totally alternate strategy?
28:30They've all watched
28:32where the rest
28:32will come back out
28:33onto the circuit.
28:34So Mary Boyer
28:35has taken control
28:36of this qualifying session
28:38in terms of
28:39who is going to get it to.
28:40Yeah, he's
28:43what appears
28:44to take control.
28:44Yes.
28:45But unfortunately,
28:46that mainly involves
28:47losing control
28:48of the session
28:49because where you want
28:50to be is here.
28:53Drive through,
28:53it's a known gap.
28:55They know how long
28:56it takes for the car
28:57to drive through
28:58the pit lane
28:58so they can drop
28:59by a known amount.
29:00And this is simply
29:01about not being first
29:04when it comes time
29:05to deliver the laps.
29:06They're trying to manage
29:07brakes and tyres here
29:08and the game is
29:09keep your car
29:11in the window.
29:13Tyre degradation
29:13is not a problem.
29:14It's all about
29:15brake temperature
29:16and tyre temperature
29:18and how slow
29:19can you go
29:19to keep your car
29:21in the window
29:22to deliver a lap
29:23without tripping
29:24over anybody
29:25or getting a penalty.
29:26Yeah.
29:27In terms of our
29:28championship leaders,
29:29Solov,
29:29P5,
29:31Gabriele Mini P7,
29:32Camera P1.
29:33Those are the top three
29:34split by 22 points.
29:36Remember the top 10
29:37reverse for the sprint
29:38race tomorrow
29:39so they want to be
29:40in that top 10.
29:41It can prove critical
29:42in their race weekend
29:46and Marie Boyer
29:47slowing the pace
29:49right down
29:50just waiting to see
29:51if anyone will go by him.
29:53If not,
29:54he will be the one
29:55to dish out a toe
29:56to the championship leader.
29:59Spending
30:0090% of the time
30:01in the mirrors now,
30:03Marie Boyer,
30:03what's he going to
30:04choose to do here?
30:05Do you,
30:06as the driver in the lead,
30:07do you think,
30:09how much am I prepared
30:10to hold up
30:11my qualifying session?
30:13And actually,
30:14you're getting to the limit
30:15here of where
30:16you can't get
30:18sensible laps in.
30:19They know they're all
30:20going to make it
30:20across the line
30:21and say,
30:21Marie Boyer is now
30:22going to crawl
30:23down to the Parabolica
30:26but nobody behind
30:27is going to pass him.
30:29Yeah,
30:29this is it.
30:30This is why you need
30:31a good banker lap in.
30:32Noel Leon is going
30:33down the outside there.
30:34We're now almost stationary
30:36and we're three right.
30:38It looks like a rolling start.
30:39It isn't.
30:40It's just Marie Boyer
30:41does not want to give out a toe.
30:43Who is it that's going
30:44to go for it?
30:45I think Roman Belinsky's
30:46had enough of waiting around
30:47and he wants to keep
30:48some heat into those tyres
30:50to make sure he has
30:51a good run going down
30:52to Redefilo
30:53and look,
30:53it's all over the place
30:54in the background there.
30:56Everyone all of a sudden
30:57trying to go for it
30:58at the same time.
30:59So in clear air out front,
31:01this could be a very good decision
31:02that has been made
31:03by Roman Belinsky.
31:05I don't know if somebody
31:05lost the engine
31:06in an Alpine Junior
31:07Leverage car
31:08in the background there
31:09from going so slowly
31:10but there are toes
31:11then being given out
31:12and it's a Basti Montoya
31:15who's having a look
31:16down the inside
31:17of Solov
31:17they're in towards
31:18turn one
31:18so they're tripping
31:19over themselves
31:19already on this
31:21qualifying lap.
31:22Yep,
31:22we weren't far away
31:23from getting into
31:24the window of drivers
31:25not even getting across
31:2630 seconds in hand
31:28as some of the ones
31:29towards the back
31:30come across the line
31:31they just have to hope
31:32there isn't a yellow flag
31:33up ahead
31:34but look at that
31:35four tenths down
31:35is Roman Belinsky
31:37through the first sector.
31:38Has Belinsky
31:38made a mistake there
31:39in the first sector?
31:41Is anybody improving?
31:42Yes,
31:43Bennett and Stenshawn
31:43have done better
31:44first sectors
31:45so it's Boya Villa-Gomez
31:46and Feta Paldi
31:47so there are improvements
31:48to be had out there
31:49but they messed around
31:51a little bit too long
31:53I think
31:53letting the tyres cool
31:55on the way down
31:55towards turn one.
31:57Stenshawn is in a very
31:58good position here
31:59because he's catching
32:00Murray Boya
32:01and he will get
32:01a very good toe
32:02going down to Parabolica
32:04and then down
32:05the start-finish straight
32:06as well
32:06hearing some lock-ups
32:07through the headphones
32:09as the drivers
32:10make their way
32:10into Ascari
32:11but it's definitely
32:12a clean run here
32:13Alex
32:13for Stenshawn.
32:14Turn 11 incidents
32:15been noted
32:16Race Control
32:16will be having
32:17a look at that
32:17Stenshawn's better
32:18in the first
32:18not better
32:19in the second
32:20Solov the reverse
32:21let's see what
32:22the final sector
32:23gives them
32:23on new tyres
32:24that are now
32:24up to temperature
32:25the time is zero
32:27this will be it.
32:28Across the line
32:29we come then
32:29Alex Dunn
32:30has gone purple
32:31through the second sector
32:32what can Belinsky
32:33do?
32:33He improves
32:34a couple of positions
32:35Murray Boya
32:35up towards the top 10
32:36Stenshawn has gone third
32:38Solov will be P5
32:39at best
32:40as John Bennett
32:41puts himself
32:42in the top 10 positions
32:43will there be
32:44any more changes
32:44behind?
32:45Yes
32:45Alex Dunn
32:46will join Rafa Kammerer
32:47on the front row
32:49but there still
32:50are some drivers
32:50to complete their laps
32:52up to the line
32:53we come now
32:53with the final few
32:54and Dirksen
32:55makes it
32:56and Invicta
32:561-2
32:57to Sanepol
32:58Intrapuvizac
32:58over the line
32:59now
32:59that's P7
33:00for him
33:01we're just waiting
33:02for Gertha
33:03and Van Hoopen
33:04over the line
33:05but it looks like
33:06the Aramco pole position
33:07has gone to Rafa Kammerer
33:09with a 1.31.326
33:12just beating his teammate
33:14Joshua Dux
33:14the camera
33:16keeps the pole position
33:18right at the end
33:18final lap across the line
33:2037.3
33:21and this
33:24again
33:24we see it every year
33:26we say it every year
33:27a little bit too much
33:28wasn't it
33:28Belinsky on the grass there
33:30and we'll have to see
33:31how that plays out
33:32with race control
33:34turn 11 incident
33:36has been noted
33:37you've got a car there
33:39still going
33:40incredibly slowly
33:41which one of the
33:41Alpine juniors
33:42is that
33:42is that
33:43Cushmine
33:44maybe
33:44let's have a look
33:45let's have a look
33:46on board with Dunn
33:47well there comes a
33:47Prima
33:48that's Montoya
33:49going flying by
33:50there was some contact
33:50with drivers
33:51trying to
33:53heat their tyres up
33:54and I think it was
33:54as it's done
33:55yeah
33:55and I think it's done
33:56still hesitating
33:57to go
34:00so you're giving B1
34:02turn your B2
34:03not too bad
34:04nice one
34:05good job
34:07yeah
34:10good job
34:11good job
34:13congrats guys
34:13yeah good job
34:40thank you so much
34:44very nice
34:45very nice
34:48for Rafa
34:49that is eight times
34:50he is qualified
34:51on the front row
34:52this season
34:53the second for Dirksen
34:54although he had a grid drop
34:55at Barcelona
34:56so it'll be
34:57a front row lockout
34:58for Invicta
35:00and it did work for Dunn
35:02didn't it
35:02because he did improve
35:03on that last lap
35:04yeah
35:05nice job
35:05from Alex Dunn
35:07you've got to wonder though
35:09when you look at it
35:10as we check in with
35:12oh ho ho
35:13there's a big moment
35:15wasn't it
35:15for Marnie
35:16on the exit
35:16of the Ascari chicane
35:18you've got to wonder
35:19if Alex Dunn
35:20did what he did
35:21at the beginning
35:22of that session
35:23found a completely
35:24different part of the track
35:25and just maximised
35:26the new tyre
35:28whether he would be
35:29on pole there
35:29because he looked so quick
35:31in comparison
35:32we will never know
35:33that wasn't the strategy
35:34that they chose
35:35I think the problem is
