00:00As he was drowning, a huge whale swam at him.
00:04Next second, he was up in a slimy belly, wondering where he was.
00:09From all of the noise, he figured out he got swallowed by a whale.
00:14But to understand how he got swallowed alive by a whale,
00:17we must first go back to the beginning of his story.
00:21Picture the nation of Israel, hundreds of years before Jesus was born.
00:26The country was experiencing a golden age.
00:28Wealth flowed into the capital.
00:31The borders stretched farther than ever before,
00:34and the people slept soundly in their beds.
00:37The man who had predicted all this peace and prosperity was a prophet named Jonah.
00:44When Jonah spoke, the king listened.
00:47He was fiercely proud of his country,
00:49and he believed with all his heart that God favored Israel above anyone else in the world.
00:55But hundreds of miles away, a dark shadow was creeping across the map.
01:01The Assyrian Empire.
01:03Their capital city was Nineveh, and the very name made people shudder.
01:08The Assyrians weren't just soldiers.
01:11They were monsters.
01:12When they conquered a city, they wanted everyone to watch.
01:16They dragged captives away with hooks in their noses.
01:20They tore families apart for sport.
01:23To a proud Israelite like Jonah,
01:26Nineveh was the darkest, most evil place on the planet.
01:29It was a violent beast.
01:30He was waiting in the shadows to devour God's people.
01:35Then the voice of God broke through Jonah's comfortable life.
01:38Go to the great city of Nineveh, God commanded.
01:42Preach against it, because I have seen their wickedness.
01:46God didn't tell Jonah to take an army.
01:49He told him to walk straight into the belly of the beast with nothing but a message.
01:54But Jonah didn't run away, because he was scared of the dark.
01:58He ran, because he knew exactly how God worked.
02:02Jonah knew that if he warned Nineveh, the people there might actually feel sorry for their crimes.
02:08And if they felt sorry, the God of Israel, who is endlessly kind and quick to forgive, might just let
02:16them live.
02:17Jonah could not stomach that.
02:20He wanted the beast to burn.
02:22So he packed his bags and ran.
02:26He went down to the seaport of Joppa, bought a ticket on a heavy wooden cargo ship,
02:30and set sail for Tarshish.
02:32Tarshish was the very edge of the known map, in the exact opposite direction of Nineveh.
02:38Jonah wanted to sail off the edge of the world, far away from God's voice,
02:44leaving Nineveh to die in its own filth.
02:47He climbed down into the dark bottom of the ship, curled up on the wooden floorboards, and fell fast asleep.
02:54His conscience was perfectly clear, but God hurled a violent wind at the sea.
02:59The ocean roared.
03:01Waves crashed over the deck, tossing the massive ship around like a bath toy.
03:07The sailors, men who had spent their entire lives fighting the ocean, were absolutely terrified.
03:14To keep from sinking, they started throwing heavy boxes and cargo into the foaming water.
03:20Every man screamed out prayers to whatever God he thought might listen.
03:25Down below, the prophet of the one true God was still snoring.
03:29The captain rushed down the stairs, grabbed Jonah, and shook him awake.
03:34How can you sleep?
03:35He screamed over the thunder.
03:38Get up!
03:38Pray to your God!
03:40Maybe he will notice us before we all drown!
03:43The sailors knew this was no ordinary weather.
03:46Someone on board had angered the heavens.
03:48They cast lots, rolling stones to see who was cursed, and the stones pointed straight at Jonah.
03:56The men cornered him.
03:58Rain lashed at their faces, and the deck heaved beneath their feet.
04:02Tell us, they demanded.
04:04Who brought this curse on us?
04:06What is your job?
04:08Where are you from?
04:10Jonah stood balancing on the shaking wood and told the cold truth.
04:13I am Jonah.
04:14I am a Hebrew.
04:16I worship the Lord, the God of heaven, who made the sea and the dry land.
04:22The men froze in sheer panic.
04:24Jonah had already bragged that he was running from his God.
04:28What have you done?
04:29They shrieked.
04:30What do we have to do to you to make the sea calm down?
04:35Jonah's answer was ice cold.
04:38Pick me up and throw me into the water.
04:41Then the sea will stop.
04:43I know this storm is my fault.
04:45Jonah was so bitter that he preferred to drown in the freezing ocean,
04:49rather than see his enemies saved.
04:52But the sailors, men who didn't even know God,
04:56had more heart than the prophet.
04:58They refused to kill him.
05:01They grabbed their oars and fought the ocean, rowing furiously to reach the shore.
05:07But the sea only grew wilder, fighting back until their muscles burned and gave out.
05:13Defeated, the sailors dropped their oars.
05:15They looked up into the pouring rain and prayed to a God they had just met.
05:20Please, Lord, they begged.
05:23Don't let us die for taking this man's life.
05:26Then they grabbed Jonah by his arms and legs, hoisted him over the railing,
05:30and threw him into the black, churning water.
05:34The instant Jonah hit the waves, the storm died.
05:38The wind vanished.
05:39The water turned to glass.
05:42The sailors collapsed on the deck in absolute awe.
05:45They had just witnessed the terrifying power of the real God.
05:49Right there on the wet wood, they promised their lives to him.
05:54The sailors found salvation, while the stubborn prophet sank like a stone.
06:01Jonah plunged into the icy depths.
06:04Water rushed into his lungs.
06:06Seaweed wrapped around his throat like a rope.
06:08He sank deeper and deeper into total crushing blackness.
06:12He was dying, but God wasn't finished with him.
06:14God sent a monster of the deep.
06:17A massive fish glided through the dark water,
06:20opened its cavernous mouth, and swallowed Jonah whole.
06:24For three days and three nights,
06:27Jonah sat inside the suffocating stomach of the fish.
06:31It was pitch black, dripping with acid, and smelled of rotting sea life.
06:36And that awful, terrifying dark was exactly what it took to break Jonah's pride.
06:41The runaway prophet finally prayed.
06:45He didn't make excuses anymore.
06:47He didn't argue.
06:49He just confessed how far he had fallen.
06:53He talked about the ocean crushing him,
06:55feeling locked away from the world forever.
06:58And then, at rock bottom, he looked up.
07:03Those who chase fake gods lose the love that could save them,
07:08Jonah prayed in the dark.
07:09But I will sing to you.
07:11I will keep my promise.
07:13Salvation comes from the Lord.
07:15He finally surrendered.
07:17God heard that muffled voice coming from the belly of the beast,
07:22deep beneath the waves.
07:24God spoke to the fish, and it swam to the shore,
07:28violently vomiting Jonah out onto the dry, sun-baked sand.
07:33Jonah lay there, gasping for air,
07:36smelling like the bottom of the ocean.
07:39Then, the voice of God came to him a second time.
07:43Get up.
07:44Go to the great city of Nineveh.
07:46Give them the message I tell you.
07:48This time Jonah got up.
07:49He walked for hundreds of miles,
07:52crossing the scorching desert,
07:53until he stood looking up at the towering, terrifying gates of Nineveh.
08:04Jonah marched one full day right into the belly of the enemy capital.
08:08Jonah marched one full day right into the belly of the enemy capital.
08:12And he certainly didn't tell them God loved them.
08:16He delivered the shortest, most bitter speech in history.
08:21In his own language, it was exactly five words long.
08:25Forty more days, and Nineveh will be completely destroyed.
08:30That was it.
08:31He dropped the bomb, turned his back, and walked away.
08:34But then, the impossible happened.
08:38The people of Nineveh listened.
08:40They didn't just listen.
08:41They believed.
08:43From the wealthiest nobles to the poorest street sweepers,
08:47a wave of panic and sorrow washed over the city.
08:51People stopped eating.
08:52They ripped off their fine clothes,
08:55and dressed in rough, scratchy sackcloth,
08:58to show their deep grief.
09:00The news reached the king of Nineveh,
09:02the most ruthless, powerful warlord on earth.
09:05When he heard Jonah's words,
09:07the king stood up.
09:08He stripped off his royal robes,
09:11covered himself in sackcloth,
09:13and sat down in the dirt.
09:15He issued a desperate command to the entire empire.
09:19No man or beast will eat or drink.
09:22Everyone must cry out to God.
09:24Everyone must drop their weapons and turn from their violence.
09:28Who knows?
09:30Maybe God will pity us and hold back his anger,
09:33so we don't burn.
09:34God looked down,
09:36and saw an entire city of killers
09:39dropping their swords and begging for mercy.
09:42And because their change was real,
09:45God's heart softened.
09:47He cancelled the destruction.
09:49The greatest turnaround in human history had just happened.
09:52A savage empire fell to its knees and was saved.
09:55This should have been Jonah's greatest victory.
09:59He should have been cheering in the streets.
10:02Instead, his blood boiled.
10:04To Jonah, this was a total catastrophe.
10:07God had just pardoned the monsters
10:09who wanted to destroy Jonah's homeland.
10:12Jonah stomped out of the city,
10:14his face red with rage,
10:16and screamed at the sky.
10:18I knew it!
10:19He roared.
10:20Isn't this exactly what I said back home?
10:22This is why I ran away to Tarshish.
10:24I knew you were too kind.
10:26I knew you were slow to anger
10:28and dripping with love.
10:29I knew you'd rather forgive than punish.
10:32Jonah wasn't mad
10:34because God was unfair.
10:36He was furious because God was too good.
10:39He couldn't stomach a God who loved the bad guys.
10:42Just kill me now, Lord,
10:44Jonah spat.
10:45I'd rather be dead than live in a world
10:48where Nineveh gets saved.
10:50During the storm,
10:52Jonah wanted to die to avoid preaching.
10:54Now, he wanted to die
10:56because his preaching actually worked.
10:59God whispered a single sharp question
11:01into Jonah's rage.
11:02Do you really have the right to be this angry?
11:05Jonah ignored him.
11:07He stormed off,
11:09built a flimsy little shelter
11:11out of twigs just east of the city,
11:13and sat in the dirt.
11:15He crossed his arms and glared at Nineveh,
11:18secretly hoping God would change his mind.
11:21As Jonah sat baking in the brutal desert sun,
11:25God did something surprisingly gentle.
11:27He caused a leafy green vine
11:29to sprout from the dirt right behind Jonah.
11:32It grew miraculously fast,
11:35spreading broad, thick leaves over Jonah's head.
11:38For the first time in the entire story,
11:41Jonah smiled.
11:42He was thrilled about this little plant.
11:45But at dawn the next day,
11:47God sent a tiny worm.
11:49The worm chewed through the stem of the plant
11:51until it withered and died.
11:54The beautiful green leaves turned brown
11:56and crumbled away.
11:57When the sun rose higher,
11:59God sent a scorching, fiery wind from the east.
12:02The heat blasted Jonah in the face,
12:05and the sun beat down on his unprotected head
12:08until he felt dizzy and sick.
12:11It would be better for me to just die,
12:13he groaned.
12:15God spoke one last time.
12:16Do you have a right to be so furiously angry
12:19over a dead plant?
12:20Yes, I do,
12:22Jonah screamed back.
12:24I am angry enough to die.
12:26Then God laid out the absolute truth.
12:28Look at yourself,
12:30God said.
12:31You are breaking your heart over a weed.
12:33You didn't plant it.
12:35You didn't water it.
12:36It grew in a single night
12:37and died in a single night.
12:39Yet, you love it so much.
12:42If you can care that deeply
12:44about a mindless plant,
12:45shouldn't I care about the great city of Nineveh?
12:49There are 120,000 people in that city
12:52who are so lost,
12:53they don't even know their right hand
12:55from their left.
12:57Not to mention all the innocent animals.
13:00Shouldn't I have pity on them?
13:02And that is exactly where the story
13:04cuts to black.
13:06There is no neat ending.
13:08We never hear Jonah's answer.
13:11We don't know if he broke down in tears
13:13and apologized,
13:14or if he stayed furious
13:16and trudged back to Israel
13:18with a bitter, frozen heart.
13:20This ancient story
13:22isn't really about a guy
13:23getting swallowed by a sea monster.
13:26It is a story
13:27about a man's prejudice
13:28colliding with a God
13:30whose love refuses
13:31to stay inside borders.
