01:10What do you think is going to happen?
01:12Miller was arrested after he was accused of burglarizing a Mission Viejo church.
01:16I love my lesson.
01:17Jason Mayhem Miller is facing charges again.
01:20But it's funny how you can unlearn.
01:22It was completely upside down for a while.
01:24What's going on, man?
01:25I just didn't want to be Mayhem at that time.
01:28I was worried if Jason hurt himself.
01:30It was jail or death.
01:31It's not my fault.
01:32I didn't put a bottle in his hand.
01:35How does one of the UFC's most promising stars fall?
01:38Miller has several other cases pending.
01:40And fall.
01:41Would a SWAT team in your backyard be your bottom?
01:44It wasn't for Jason.
01:46And fall again.
01:47True mayhem erupted.
01:49I was afraid of losing my only son.
01:51These are hard moments that I've lived.
01:54I lost everything.
01:55Yeah.
02:15I think there's a lot of overlap in the mindset of a soldier or an athlete.
02:20You just join your own army.
02:22You work towards your own goals.
02:23And, yeah, you have to go through the tough stuff that nobody wants to do.
02:27And call it.
02:29203, take two.
02:30Mark.
02:34I'm Jason Mayhem Miller.
02:36Dude, like, how do you explain mayhem, right?
02:41It's your life, not mine.
02:42I know, yeah.
02:44I guess we're doing it, huh?
02:45We're, like, attempting.
02:48Jason is a wild and crazy kind of guy.
02:52He's not going to let anybody tell him who he is.
02:55If Jason wants to do it, he's going to do it.
02:57I am Kim Miller, Mama Mayhem.
03:00My son is Jason Nicholas Mayhem Miller.
03:04He was a kid who was everywhere.
03:07I mean, he was everywhere.
03:08He had a creative imagination.
03:10He would want to wear costumes and be Superman or Spider-Man.
03:15Just a hyper, little go-go-go kind of kid.
03:19As an army brat, Jason moves with his family to different military bases across the country.
03:25He was a Tasmanian devil.
03:27He had me rolling with laughter as a kid.
03:30I'm Megan, Jason Mayhem Miller's little sister, his first sparring partner, and first friend.
03:37I looked up to him.
03:39We roughhoused.
03:40We play fought.
03:41He played with me like I was a little brother.
03:43Oh, my goodness.
03:44Me and my sister would fight.
03:47She was, like, the biggest telegraph puncher in the world.
03:50She would just get angry and reel her back and sock you.
03:55There was one instance, me and Jason were jumping on the couch doing our karate moves.
04:01One of us kicked the other one in the mouth.
04:03She reared back.
04:04So I jumped back.
04:06I gave her the bing like that, then stepped on a pair of scissors.
04:10I'm holding my foot, jumping up and down, because I'm bleeding everywhere.
04:15Thankfully, he did knock a tooth out, but I cut his foot open.
04:19My mom came in the room.
04:21My sister was holding her tooth.
04:22She thought maybe I could think.
04:24She bit my toe.
04:25He couldn't really hurt me, because he'd get to do shit, because I was the baby sister.
04:30You know, I could do no wrong.
04:34Dad wasn't a super involved parent.
04:37He was a man's man, like a John Wayne type of character.
04:41You don't do women's work.
04:43I wasn't like the sympathetic, you fell down, here come, let me pat you on the head and
04:50make you feel better.
04:51I was the guy that said, rub some dirt in it.
04:54My name is Mike Miller, father of man.
04:57I already knew it by the time he was three years old.
05:00He was stubborn.
05:02He was just really starting to be very insubordinate.
05:06He was getting into fights as a teenager plenty.
05:08I don't know why he had this propensity to just want to beat people up.
05:13He was being a little jerk.
05:15I told him he wasn't going to behave like that.
05:17Mayhem tried to stress you out as much as possible.
05:21He usually bucked authority.
05:23After being diagnosed with ADHD, Jason's prescribed medication.
05:27He says that does little to rein in his personality.
05:31When I gave the pills, I didn't have really guidance from good health care or anything.
05:38I just had like some doc write me something and I figured, okay, this is what you do when
05:44you live here and it didn't work out.
05:47Desperate to get their son on the right track, they subject Jason to a homegrown version of
05:53military boot camp.
05:54You want to get in trouble?
05:55I got something for you.
05:57I cut his hair off with dog clippers.
05:59He just like turned me into a soldier.
06:01We were doing an intervention with Jason, but just not with professionals.
06:06Three or four or five mile jogs, calisthenics, push-ups, sit-ups, painting trim on windows,
06:12raking leaves, cutting grass, picking up trash.
06:15Everything was to make it uncomfortable for him.
06:17This mother in my face is like a drill sergeant.
06:20Do this, do that, stand at attention.
06:22Put your hands behind your back.
06:24I wanted to break him before I built him back up.
06:27I was like, I hate you.
06:28I hate you, I hate you, I hate you.
06:30I'm going to kill you.
06:31I have no regrets about putting him through Miller boot camp.
06:38When Jason develops an interest in the burgeoning sport of MMA and starts skipping school to train
06:44at a local boxing gym, his mother and sister are mostly confused.
06:48They didn't know what I was doing exactly.
06:51They thought it was a strange endeavor.
06:53What are you doing?
06:53You're a, what, it's a sport?
06:56It's a sport that you guys are doing?
06:58You're in an underwear during this?
07:00No, it's not underwear.
07:01They're fights.
07:02They're found the Tudor shorts.
07:03They wish to be well.
07:05Like, they didn't say, hey, you're an idiot.
07:07That was my dad.
07:08I was worried about, one, you're not going to make it.
07:11Number two, you don't have to self-discipline to do this
07:14because you've got to train like crazy to do this.
07:17And number three, how are you going to survive?
07:19How are you going to, how are you going to live?
07:22You don't know what you're getting into.
07:24He was like, damn dumbass, because he wanted me to go to computer school.
07:27I pushed back against my father in that respect.
07:30By the time he turns 17, Jason is fighting in no-holds-barred competitions.
07:36I was living my dream.
07:37This is what I wanted to do with my life.
07:39He dedicates the next few years perfecting his craft,
07:42seeking the best mixed martial arts training across the country.
07:46Tito Ortiz, I went to him.
07:48He was like the total martial artist of the time.
07:50He had a good mentality for training.
07:52Team punishment.
07:53It was like a big moment in my life.
07:55His strong grappling skills and submission techniques
07:58land him a series of wins and earn him the nickname Mayhem.
08:03That is a hardcore nickname, damn.
08:05I was like, yeah, all right, fine, I'm Mayhem.
08:08He soon takes a trip to paradise to prove it.
08:11Hawaii has had a warrior culture for 600 years.
08:15It was primed to be a mecca of MMA.
08:16I'm TJ Thompson, known as the godfather of MMA in Hawaii.
08:21I had one superstar that I needed to be champion.
08:24Egan, you win!
08:27I need to find an opponent for Egan that is credible,
08:32but I'm confident that Egan will win.
08:34So I called Jason and I said,
08:36Jason, I've got to fight for you.
08:37You're probably not going to win.
08:39And Jason said, I'm going to kick his ass.
08:43I just saw him as this big, goofy, white guy.
08:48There's no way he's beating Egan.
08:50My name is Rich Chow.
08:52I've known Jason Miller for over 20 years,
08:54and I was also his fight promoter.
08:57The night of the fight comes along,
08:59and we have a sold-out Blaisdell Arena.
09:00Local fans, their local hero, Egan and Noe.
09:03It was Egan's crowd.
09:05He was the man.
09:06He was the hometown hero.
09:07And this white boy from Atlanta walks out.
09:10They call him Mayhem!
09:13Jason Miller!
09:16There's a group of gangsters
09:18just giving Jason the business.
09:21you, Haole.
09:23Go home, Haole.
09:24You're going to die.
09:26Haole's a derogatory term
09:28for anyone not local.
09:30What I'm thinking to myself is,
09:32this kid's not going to get out of the arena alive.
09:34He did not care that he was supposed to lose
09:36and that the whole crowd was booing.
09:38He had me.
09:39Perfect jiu-jitsu technique.
09:41But the counter is this.
09:43Then it became a battle of who's tired first.
09:47Four minutes left, a lot of time.
09:49And he just kept taking the fight to Egan.
09:51He just kept going.
09:52Egan falls to his back.
09:54White boy from Atlanta does a flying jump
09:57and kicks Egan in the chest
09:59and breaks his rib and wins the fight.
10:02Chase him!
10:04Chase him!
10:05He's doing a little break, that's moving!
10:09That sound of the hometown hero getting smashed.
10:12There's a lot of neck craning
10:14to look at this Haole boy.
10:16Mayhem celebrating his big win
10:19by antagonizing the crowd.
10:21Oh man, they're mad!
10:23Gangsters are mad too.
10:24I was like, ah man,
10:25let's just get my money and go home.
10:28And now local Hawaiian fight fans
10:30have someone that we can hate.
10:31They billed him as the most dangerous Haole
10:35since Captain Cook
10:36because he was the foreigner
10:38that came to the islands
10:40and beat all the locals up.
10:42Kept going to the radio station
10:44and like talking smack.
10:45Who is this guy that you're fighting?
10:46I don't need to say his name
10:47to punch him in the face
10:48and choke him unconscious.
10:50I was being the bad guy on purpose,
10:51but I got the respect to the crowd
10:53slowly but surely.
10:55That was way better!
10:57That was awesome!
10:59The more time he spent in Honolulu
11:01hanging out with people,
11:02people just really started
11:03to love and embrace him.
11:06And the more fights he was winning
11:07led to him becoming a very big star.
11:13He went from being the villain,
11:15the heel,
11:16to turning into the hometown hero.
11:20Mayhem's domination of Hawaii
11:22grabs the attention of Dana White,
11:24who invites him to compete
11:25in his first UFC fight
11:27against Georges St-Pierre.
11:29This is Jason's big break.
11:32I was excited
11:33to show the world mayhem.
11:35GSP was the man at that time.
11:38There wasn't a bigger fighter
11:38in the world
11:39when Jason got that opportunity.
11:41Let's get it on! Come on!
11:42He has a taste for a spectacle,
11:44so I knew going into that fight
11:46it would be something special.
11:47My name is Georges St-Pierre.
11:48I'm the former welterweight
11:50and middleweight champion of the UFC.
11:52I fought Jason Miller, UFC 52.
11:55Normally, counter nature
11:56to put the opponent in a certain position.
11:59Most of the guys would have tapped,
12:01but he does not tap.
12:02He just live and breathe there.
12:04I was like,
12:05holy mackerel, what is this?
12:07I cheered him on.
12:08I mean, this is what he wanted to do.
12:09After all of the trials
12:11and tribulations
12:12that he had gone through,
12:13he was going to show his dad
12:15who he was.
12:17I really did play that role.
12:18I'll show you, dad.
12:20Like, yeah, look.
12:21See that?
12:21It takes a lot of discipline
12:22and hard work
12:23to get to those highest levels.
12:27He didn't quit.
12:29He didn't quit.
12:30I would have quit.
12:31I think I would have quit.
12:32I told him he couldn't do it.
12:35Proved me wrong.
12:36You sure did, son.
12:38You proved me wrong.
12:39Although Mayhem loses,
12:41he gains the respect
12:42of the MMA community
12:44by making it to a decision
12:45against GSP.
12:46That was an intense firefight.
12:48You do three rounds of GSP.
12:51When he returns to Hawaii,
12:53Mayhem's newly enhanced
12:55celebrity status
12:56opens doors
12:56to the late night party scene.
12:58Jason and I,
12:59we started to get really close.
13:01It was a lot of partying.
13:02We went out quite a bit.
13:04Hawaii was a different world.
13:07Every nightclub scene,
13:09it was like a wild time.
13:11But it was fun.
13:12Ended up in trouble
13:13with this kind of
13:15nightclub adventure.
13:17It was just another night
13:18on the town
13:18and we were out
13:20having a blast
13:21and we'd get back
13:22to the hotel.
13:23There was a good group of us.
13:25We were all hanging out
13:26in the room.
13:26We were at the Royal Hawaiian
13:28and he put on
13:29his running gear
13:30and his headphones
13:31and he took off.
13:32Just thought Mayhem's
13:33going for a run.
13:33That's Mayhem.
13:34Mayhem being Mayhem.
13:35I had no clue.
13:37There was no signs
13:37that didn't give us
13:39any hints,
13:40didn't say a word.
13:41That was the first time
13:42we saw him do something
13:43that crossed the line.
13:45I was taking some damn
13:46stimulants,
13:47ADHD medicines,
13:49and man,
13:50they say you're not
13:51supposed to drink.
13:52I didn't realize that
13:53and I learned
13:55that you can.
13:56Yeah, you'll do something.
13:58You'll make a mistake.
14:00I guess he snapped.
14:09Partying in a Honolulu
14:10hotel room with friends,
14:12Jason Mayhem Miller
14:13impulsively leaves
14:15and runs to his
14:16ex-girlfriend's house.
14:17I was waiting
14:18outside the door forever.
14:19I didn't have the keys.
14:20Drunk, yelled,
14:22kicked down the door,
14:23and came in
14:24and attacked
14:25the boyfriend
14:26in the apartment.
14:27Heavyweight
14:28Jiu-Jitsu man
14:29jumped out of the closet
14:30in his socks,
14:31got his ass kicked
14:32a little bit
14:33and took off.
14:34He was charged
14:35with assault and battery
14:36and breaking and entering.
14:37It had a 10-year sentence
14:38attached to it.
14:39It was serious.
14:41Mayhem goes to court
14:43where his local celebrity status
14:44in Hawaii
14:45wins over the jury.
14:46He is acquitted
14:47of all charges.
14:49What the lawyer told me
14:50was chasing
14:51charmed the pants
14:52off the jury
14:53and they found him
14:54not guilty.
14:55I learned my lesson,
14:56but it's funny
14:57how you can unlearn.
14:59After dodging
15:00possible jail time,
15:01Mayhem commits
15:02to stop drinking
15:03while on his
15:04ADHD medication.
15:05He also begins
15:06documenting his
15:07training online
15:08that's part reality show.
15:10He would stay up
15:11all night
15:11doing what he needed
15:13to do to build
15:14an online presence,
15:15and he created
15:16a fan base
15:17for himself.
15:18One that grows
15:19beyond Hawaii.
15:20Holy crap, Mom!
15:22I'm huge!
15:24I was a young man
15:25with just a four-finger ring
15:27that said Mayhem on it.
15:28Mayhem Miller here.
15:29Mayhem show
15:30was like this
15:31wacky, fun thing.
15:32I think it was just
15:34kind of coming out of him
15:35as an outlet
15:35for his creative instincts
15:37that he had in his brain.
15:38I knew that everybody
15:39was going to start
15:40their own cult
15:41and I globbed
15:42onto that early.
15:43We hadn't really seen
15:44anybody come on the scene
15:45for MMA
15:46that had this demeanor.
15:48This is who I am.
15:49Take it or leave it.
15:51I'm Randy Couture,
15:52MMA champion
15:53and longtime friend
15:54of Mayhem Miller.
15:55I may have the skinniest arms
15:57in mixed martial arts,
15:58but they're ready to wrestle.
16:00From the start,
16:00he was kind of a wild child.
16:02The Riddler,
16:03the jokester,
16:04zany,
16:05kind of wacky.
16:06Creative,
16:07a lot of fun,
16:08wearing masks,
16:09coming out dancing.
16:11One of his fights
16:12in Japan,
16:12he stops
16:14to throw a peace sign.
16:16Everybody wanted
16:17to see what he'd do next.
16:18You are on the edge
16:19of your seat
16:20because of his unpredictability.
16:22He catches the attention
16:24of the folks at MTV
16:25who see a way
16:26to transform Jason's
16:27online personality
16:29into a cable TV show.
16:31My name is Jason Mayhem Miller
16:33and I'm a mixed martial arts fighter.
16:35So if there's something I hate,
16:36it's a bully.
16:38They thought this guy
16:39was so cool.
16:40He needs to be on MTV
16:42and they were right.
16:45Traveling.
16:46Big, goofy, white guy,
16:47what the hell is this?
16:48Bully Beatdown
16:48was pseudo-game show,
16:51I guess you'd call it,
16:52which was sort of
16:53a pros versus
16:54Joe's situation.
16:55You got one ball,
16:56please tell me you got two.
17:00Bully Beatdown
17:01was a show
17:01about taking bullies
17:03that thought
17:03that they were tough
17:04and putting them
17:06in against a professional fighter
17:07and seeing
17:08if they really were.
17:09It was real,
17:10the fights were real
17:11and it was
17:13absolutely hysterical.
17:15I'm John McCarthy,
17:16I was the referee
17:17for Bully Beatdown
17:18who had the one and only
17:19Jason Mayhem Miller.
17:21Playtime's over.
17:22Now it's time
17:23for some payback
17:23on Bully Beatdown.
17:25He was perfect for it.
17:27He was absolutely perfect.
17:30He has personality.
17:31He has this thing
17:33that makes you go,
17:34I don't know why
17:35I like that guy,
17:36but I like that guy.
17:37He's nuts,
17:37but I like that guy.
17:39Let's see how these guys
17:40stack up, shall we?
17:41I cannot believe
17:43that they made a show
17:44for Jason.
17:46This is exactly how he is.
17:48He showed a generation of kids
17:50that bullying is not cool.
17:52Bully Beatdown debuts
17:53as one of the most watched
17:55premieres in MTV history.
17:56I'm changing lives.
17:59The series remains
18:00at number one,
18:01then runs for two more seasons
18:02on the network.
18:03Jason hosting Bully Beatdown
18:05put him into another level
18:06of celebrity status.
18:08Mayhem's rising fame
18:10lands him the opportunity
18:11to fight for Strikeforce,
18:13where he loses his first fight,
18:14a title match
18:15against Jake Shields.
18:17Jake Shields!
18:20Yeah, that was a bummer.
18:22That was a big fight right there.
18:24We had, like, history,
18:25and it was like,
18:26damn, we're a rivalry.
18:27He is now the new
18:28Strikeforce middleweight champion.
18:30The following year,
18:32Strikeforce secures
18:33a coveted primetime spot
18:35on CBS.
18:36While Jason's first-round TKO
18:38of Tim Stout
18:38is not televised,
18:40he later plays
18:41a starring role
18:42in a live on-air melee
18:44that will not only
18:45be a major setback
18:46for Strikeforce,
18:47but for the rest
18:48of Mayhem's fighting career.
18:50Some of us still call that
18:51the nightmare in Nashville.
18:52That was the infamous
18:53CBS brawl.
18:55The main event
18:56for that fight
18:56was Jake Shields
18:58against Dan Henderson.
19:00Jake wins the fight.
19:01And Jake, congratulations.
19:03He's part of the scrap pack.
19:04That's Nick and Nate Diaz.
19:05That's Gil Melendez.
19:07They're there for their guy.
19:08Henderson's a true legend, man.
19:09I'm glad you've beaten him.
19:10Jason, who was there
19:11in the crowd,
19:12went into the cage
19:13on his own.
19:14And then Jake Shields
19:15came off the microphone
19:16and was like,
19:17oh, you want your rematch?
19:18And I was like,
19:19yeah, oh yeah.
19:20I want my rematch.
19:21Where's my rematch, buddy?
19:22To the Diaz brothers
19:23and to Gil,
19:25it was disrespectful.
19:26All hell broke loose
19:27after that.
19:27Gentlemen,
19:28we're on national television.
19:30And then I fought
19:31the whole team.
19:32Everybody.
19:33Scrap pack.
19:34My God.
19:34This is ridiculous.
19:35And then the security
19:36was fighting everyone.
19:37I think of where's Waldo,
19:39and I'm on the bottom
19:40of that dog pile.
19:41We are going to step away
19:43right now on CBS.
19:44Back right after this.
19:46Crazy night tonight,
19:47brother.
19:47What happened?
19:48Man, I just wanted
19:49to ask for my rematch.
19:50You know,
19:50I feel really bad
19:51that that whole thing
19:53went down like that.
19:54He didn't talk to any of us
19:55about it.
19:55And I think that was the problem.
19:56We got punished
19:57as a promotion,
19:58as an organization.
20:00It's not something
20:00that we will support.
20:01That marked the end
20:02of MMA on CBS
20:04for a very long time.
20:06It really hurt the show.
20:07It wasn't Jason's fault.
20:09Obviously,
20:10he was an absolute
20:11combustible part of it.
20:13Just was the wrong time.
20:14I think he gets caught up
20:16in the moment,
20:16and that puts him
20:17in some circumstances
20:18that wishes he hadn't
20:19got caught up in.
20:20I was never concerned
20:22with Jason hurting other people.
20:24I was worried
20:25of Jason hurting himself.
20:33Where's my rematch, buddy?
20:35He was trying
20:36to cut a promo,
20:36trying to be a showman,
20:37and it didn't work out.
20:38And unfortunately,
20:39we all suffered for it.
20:40The repercussions
20:41for the Tennessee brawl
20:43was dire.
20:44Put me on the suspension.
20:46I got fined.
20:47The whole internet hates me.
20:50It was heavy.
20:51I had to sit out
20:52when I was very hungry
20:54to fight every two months.
20:56Mayhem's suspension
20:57is lifted,
20:58but Strikeforce benches him
21:00for the remaining
21:00three months
21:01of his contract.
21:02He is left to train
21:04without an upcoming fight.
21:06What was the most
21:06important thing
21:07to Jason at the time?
21:09It was fighting.
21:10He returns to film
21:12Bully Beatdown.
21:13Bring us your bullies
21:14and we'll beat them up.
21:15But his discipline
21:16begins to erode,
21:18and his colleagues
21:19on Bully Beatdown
21:20start to notice.
21:21When Jason was in tune
21:23with what he was supposed
21:24to be doing,
21:25he was great to work
21:26with.
21:26There was times
21:27when you looked
21:27and I don't want to say
21:28unraveling,
21:29but Jason was taking
21:31medication at the time
21:32for some of his
21:34mental stability.
21:35Sometimes he didn't
21:36like to take it.
21:36He thought he could
21:37self-medicate in other ways
21:38with marijuana
21:39or things like that.
21:40You looked and you go,
21:42don't be stupid with it.
21:43Don't do something
21:44that's going to end up
21:45hurting you.
21:45I tried to get him
21:46to take the pills,
21:47but he wouldn't.
21:47He said it made him
21:49feel dumb.
21:50It made him feel slow,
21:51and it made him sick.
21:54and he wouldn't take them.
21:55When you are told,
21:57I have to take something,
21:58and now I don't feel normal,
21:59I don't feel like the guy
22:00that I was
22:01or the person that I was,
22:03that's tough.
22:04We all play this game
22:05of mental health.
22:07You have to keep your mind
22:09right so that the rest
22:10of your life goes perfect.
22:12When Mayhem's contract
22:14with Strikeforce expires,
22:16the UFC offers him
22:17a three-fight deal
22:18and a job as coach
22:20on their own reality show,
22:21the ultimate fighter.
22:23That means
22:24no more Bully Beatdown.
22:25When Jason pulled out
22:28of doing Bully Beatdown,
22:29that show shut down.
22:31They decided,
22:32we don't want anybody else
22:34doing it.
22:35That says a lot about
22:36what they thought
22:36about Jason Miller.
22:38They loved him.
22:39Jason Mayhem Miller
22:40finally makes his way
22:41back in the UFC,
22:42but he has a very,
22:44very difficult task.
22:46He was going up
22:46against a really tough guy
22:48in Michael Bisping.
22:49It wasn't like,
22:49oh, this is going to be
22:50an easy fight for you.
22:51From that moment
22:52of making the decision,
22:54okay, this is what
22:55I'm going to do,
22:56things did not go
22:57the way Jason planned
22:58him to go.
22:59It's a very strange thing
23:00that I've been blessed with
23:01where I'll just get it all
23:03and then keep gambling.
23:07Mayhem's family
23:07throws him a party,
23:09to celebrate his return
23:10to the UFC.
23:11Jason came out.
23:12We had friends over.
23:14Megan came.
23:15Her and her brother
23:17got into an argument.
23:19He was drinking and smoking
23:21while he was supposed
23:22to be in training.
23:24He was a month away
23:25from fighting Michael Bisping.
23:27I was like,
23:27what are you doing?
23:28Like, you're supposed
23:30to be in training right now.
23:31Quite frankly,
23:32it pissed me off.
23:33She was policing
23:34everyone's behavior
23:35and, like, ruining
23:36the UFC party.
23:38Telling them,
23:39don't smoke in the garage
23:40and, like, yelling
23:41at everybody.
23:42Said,
23:43Megan, you can't yell
23:44at people.
23:45She rears back
23:47with the telegraph punch.
23:49I cannot believe
23:50she's going to punch me
23:51in the face right now.
23:52Boy, I was ready for this
23:53since I was 10 years old.
23:54She's been doing that
23:55same overhand right forever.
23:57I ducked under the punch.
23:59I put her in the headlock
24:00and just held her.
24:00Like, stop, stop, stop.
24:03We wrestled
24:03and horseplayed as kids,
24:05but this was malicious.
24:06He cut off my airway.
24:08I had bruises on my arms.
24:10She left the house
24:11in a fit of anger
24:13and called the police on him.
24:15And the police came
24:16to the house
24:17and arrested him
24:19for assault.
24:20Filed charges on me.
24:21That's just dirty.
24:23I did press charges
24:24against him
24:25because you can't go
24:27putting your hands on people.
24:28You're a fighter.
24:29You can hurt people.
24:30And this is going to get you
24:32in a lot of trouble.
24:33She called a rag
24:35to take him down.
24:36I called TMZ
24:38and I told them
24:39what happened.
24:40I don't question
24:41doing it at all.
24:42He needed to be taught
24:43a lesson.
24:45What it was
24:46is a highly charged
24:47emotional event
24:49that hurt the family.
24:52It fractured our family.
24:53That episode right there
24:55fractured our family.
24:57This was like
24:58a big hiccup
24:59because it like
25:00put me in a strange light.
25:02And I also was like
25:05confused on why
25:06my sister would do this.
25:08Like, I was confused.
25:10He's also angry
25:11and embarrassed
25:12and soon starts
25:13to self-sabotage.
25:14I wasn't very disciplined
25:17at that time.
25:18I had eroded
25:19a lot of my discipline
25:20with drinking
25:21and drugs.
25:22Yeah, I crashed out bad.
25:24I knew I did.
25:25It becomes a rolling snowball
25:26at a certain point
25:27where all your luck
25:29keeps starting bad
25:30and so you just keep
25:31gambling on bad luck.
25:34Walking into a fight
25:35you know
25:36that you're not your best
25:38is the worst feeling.
25:41It's like you're walking
25:42through a mortuary
25:43for yourself.
25:45If you're the fighter
25:47your mentality is
25:48no matter what the stakes
25:49no matter what happens
25:50I can still win this fight.
25:52That whole left side
25:53of mayhem
25:53has been battered
25:54with those knees
25:54and another one.
25:56That's it.
25:56That's it.
25:57I figured I could pull
25:59the whole razzle dazzle
26:00on him
26:00but nah
26:00it didn't work out.
26:02I was tired.
26:02I had like the worst night
26:03of my life.
26:04It was just a bummer.
26:07I trained really hard
26:08for this fight.
26:08I'm sorry guys
26:10I got tired.
26:15Losing such an important fight
26:17really affected him bad.
26:19And I feel like my dad
26:20blamed me for it
26:22you know
26:22and I'm like
26:23how the hell did it
26:24how is it my fault?
26:25It's a little bit
26:27too personal
26:28for me to go in
26:29but
26:30there's been emotional
26:31ups and downs
26:33and I think
26:34that was part of
26:36what led up
26:37to this incident.
26:38Jason losing
26:39to Michael Bisping
26:40was the beginning
26:41of things going
26:43darker for Jason
26:45unfortunately.
26:46We didn't talk
26:47for almost 10 years
26:48yeah
26:52which was hard.
26:58Here's the thing
26:58when I was watching
26:59that fight
26:59because I've seen you
27:00train at rain
27:01I've seen you work
27:01at Kings
27:02I felt like
27:03I didn't see mayhem
27:04in there
27:04I didn't see the guy
27:05that I know
27:05I feel like
27:06I had a lot of
27:07problems
27:08that I can't talk about
27:09going into that fight
27:10and you know
27:11I mean
27:12really the key to life
27:13is just to keep
27:14pushing forward.
27:15Some people
27:16they're going to just
27:17pick themselves up
27:19dust themselves off
27:20and march forward
27:21and some people
27:23fall into a trap
27:24into a hole
27:25that they created
27:26that they can't
27:27get themselves out of
27:28and at that time
27:29that was Jason
27:29when mayhem loses
27:31his next UFC fight
27:32against CB Dalloway
27:34the UFC
27:35terminates his contract
27:37it was the loss
27:39of who he was
27:41as a professional fighter
27:42when the UFC cut him
27:43that hurt him
27:46he lost everything
27:48I was in a blurry state
27:50of intermittent drunkenness
27:53for a good stretch
27:54of my life
27:54in a post fight career
27:56how are you supposed
27:57to get excited
27:58for anything
27:58after you've been
28:00in the spotlight
28:00for so long
28:01you know
28:02you find it
28:03in these idle things
28:05right
28:05that
28:11feeling lost
28:12without the UFC
28:13mayhem's mental health
28:15continues to decline
28:16in New York
28:18promoting his cameo
28:19in the upcoming film
28:20Here Comes the Boom
28:21Jason appears
28:22on the MMA hour
28:23where things quickly
28:24spiral out of control
28:26so excited
28:27mayhem Miller
28:28no no no
28:29I just didn't
28:31want to be mayhem
28:32at that time
28:32you can't make me
28:33be mayhem
28:34for your little show
28:35yeah I'm here
28:36to promote my movie
28:38here comes the boom
28:39I'm Lucky Patrick
28:41the problem was
28:43Lucky Patrick
28:43didn't care about this show
28:45what's going on man
28:46bro I'm
28:46yo you know what
28:48you guys
28:48have a stupid
28:50internet radio show
28:51in your mom's basement
28:52that's it
28:53you're gonna do this
28:53yeah yeah
28:54he started to become
28:55so arrogant
28:56and so full of himself
28:57I didn't even
28:58recognize him
28:59he couldn't
29:00tear away
29:01the mayhem
29:02character
29:03from the Jason
29:04person
29:06when he
29:06was taking his meds
29:08they worked
29:08and he was stable
29:10but when he got off
29:12them
29:12that's usually
29:13when chaos
29:13when real
29:14true mayhem
29:15erupted
29:16mayhem says
29:17a molecular biologist
29:19he meets at a party
29:20offers him
29:21unregulated
29:22research chemicals
29:23that cause
29:24a horrible reaction
29:25I took a run
29:27from the party
29:28I ran
29:29I ran
29:30until my feet
29:31were blistered
29:31all up and down
29:32Los Angeles
29:33and I was just
29:34a mile from my house
29:35I really thought
29:37those are my house
29:38I was like
29:39in complete
29:40comfort sleep
29:41position
29:41when they found me
29:43and it kind of
29:43hurts my feelings
29:44to say
29:44that I was naked
29:45I awoke
29:47to police radios
29:49and then I realized
29:51I'm not in my house
29:52I hadn't slept
29:54in days
29:56erratic
29:57Miller was arrested
29:58after he was accused
29:59of burglarizing
30:00a Mission Viejo church
30:01and setting off
30:02the building's
30:03fire extinguisher
30:04just so bizarre
30:05and creepy
30:06just seemed like
30:07a new low
30:07this wasn't just alcohol
30:09once again
30:10Jason avoids
30:11legal repercussions
30:12when the church's
30:13pastor drops the charges
30:14saying Jason needs
30:16spiritual guidance
30:17not jail time
30:18if there's some
30:20type of stressor
30:21that continues
30:22on your body
30:22over and over again
30:23be it self-giving
30:25if you're like drinking
30:25or you're staying
30:26awake all the time
30:27yeah something clicks
30:29over and you know
30:30you just kind of
30:31go feral
30:31I don't know
30:32if I thought
30:34things were
30:35going to spiral
30:36for Jason
30:37and get as bad
30:38as they eventually
30:39ended up getting
30:40I was going through
30:41a dark time
30:42made darker
30:44when his parents
30:45file for divorce
30:46Jason's dad
30:47joins him
30:48in California
30:48but Mike's arrival
30:50will not prove
30:51to be a moderating
30:52factor
30:52on his son's behavior
30:55it's daytime
30:561-2 o'clock in the afternoon
30:57I went to try to go
30:59to his house
31:00there's quite a crowd
31:02a couple of television
31:03crews
31:0320 or 30 police officers
31:05had it taped off
31:06you couldn't get within
31:07two blocks or a block
31:09from the house
31:09I mean it was quite a scene
31:11I'm in North Carolina
31:13and I'm thinking
31:13what in the world
31:14is going on
31:15out in California
31:16I was having a crisis
31:17and they exacerbated
31:19the whole thing
31:20I didn't know
31:21where he was
31:22I didn't know
31:22what he was doing
31:23I couldn't help him
31:24I was really afraid
31:27I'm worried
31:27that they're going
31:28to kill my son
31:38after mayhem
31:39misses a court date
31:40the sheriff's department
31:41tries to serve him
31:43an arrest warrant
31:45a man has a pistol
31:46and he's sweeping
31:47it over top of me
31:48anytime you have
31:49a gun around
31:49there's potential
31:50for someone to die
31:52wouldn't open the door
31:53yeah I did not comply
31:55I didn't feel safe
31:57Orange County
31:57called the SWAT team
31:59out to take him to jail
32:01why are you guys
32:02now seizing my house
32:05I couldn't understand
32:06why they're doing this
32:08we set up a perimeter
32:09around the house
32:09and have for the last
32:11several hours
32:11attempted to make contact
32:12with Mr. Miller
32:13he knew that we wanted
32:14him to come out
32:15I felt like
32:16something bad could happen
32:17I was terrified
32:18the whole time
32:19he was going through
32:20all of this
32:21I was scared to death
32:22just watching the internet
32:25knowing if a mugshot
32:26was going to show up
32:27or if they were going
32:28to come across with
32:29the kid was dead
32:30they wouldn't let me
32:31cross the line
32:32and come in
32:33I told them look
32:34let me go over there
32:35I'll talk to him
32:36he'll come right out
32:38there was snipers
32:39on the roof
32:40it was
32:41call of duty out there
32:43alright I had enough of this
32:45before I come around
32:46the corner
32:48I hear a crack of
32:50C4 on my door
32:51I heard the explosion
32:53from him blowing the door
32:54off the hinges
32:55after more than four hours
32:57the SWAT team moved in
32:59Miller surrendered
33:00get so agitated that
33:02you think the whole world's out
33:03to get you
33:04and then the whole world
33:05is literally out to get you
33:06brought him out
33:07and handcuffs
33:09that was a bad day
33:12bad day for me
33:13much worse day for him
33:15I guess
33:16there was nothing I could do
33:18pretty much felt helpless
33:19I was so scared
33:21and I was so pissed
33:22would a full SWAT team
33:24after a home invasion
33:25and helicopters
33:26in your backyard
33:28be your bottom
33:29it wasn't for Jason
33:32that probably explains
33:33the next 10 years of my life
33:34because I think
33:36I pissed everyone off
33:38that day
33:41the SWAT incident
33:42triggers an extended
33:43mental health crisis
33:44that plays out
33:46in a series of arrests
33:47former MMA fighter
33:49Jason Mayhem Miller
33:50is facing charges again
33:52I mean he was
33:53drugging it
33:54drinking it
33:54making bad choices
33:55he did a lot of jail time
33:57this week he pleaded
33:58not guilty
33:59to a felony count
34:00of first degree burglary
34:01unlawful taking of a vehicle
34:02and grand theft auto
34:04he has a lengthy
34:05criminal history
34:06including being arrested
34:07for vandalizing
34:07a tattoo parlor
34:08in 2016
34:09and assaulting
34:10a sheriff's deputy
34:11in 2015
34:12I'm completely innocent
34:15innocent
34:16he seemed to be
34:17quite sure
34:18that he hadn't
34:20done anything wrong
34:21of course
34:21a lot of those mistakes
34:23keeps happening son
34:24so maybe it's
34:25something you're doing
34:26Miller has several
34:27other cases pending
34:29including an alleged
34:30assault on a peace
34:31officer and vandalism
34:32the nature of these crimes
34:34started to just get
34:34more and more serious
34:35and this is crossing the line
34:37the MMA fighter on trial
34:39accused of beating
34:40his now ex-girlfriend
34:42in 2013
34:43that's not the guy
34:44that I know
34:45that's not the guy
34:45that was my roommate
34:47that's a good friend of mine
34:48I honestly thought
34:49there was no saving him
34:53there was a time
34:54not too many years ago
34:56that I could have told
34:57through the end
34:57it was going to be
34:58jail or death
34:58he sort of confided in me
35:01that he had a
35:01a line of
35:02high dose Vicodins
35:04lined up in a row
35:05and was thinking
35:06about taking them all
35:08um
35:14I don't know
35:15if he was suicidal
35:17but
35:17it was clear
35:19at that moment
35:19that he was asking
35:20for help
35:22I was concerned
35:23for his mental health
35:24I didn't know
35:25what drugs he was on
35:26but I knew
35:27he wasn't well
35:28he was super depressed
35:29he would call me
35:30sometimes
35:30ma
35:31I can't do this
35:32I pleaded with him
35:34for him to get help
35:35go to a real doctor
35:37and when a person
35:39gets manic
35:39their mind
35:41is
35:41not
35:42working
35:43with all the logic
35:44it should
35:45not something
35:46that I knew
35:47how to deal with
35:48nor
35:49was
35:50was comfortable
35:51dealing
35:52dealing with
35:53Jason's bottom
35:54came from within him
35:56the being broken
35:57inside for so long
35:58not everyone
36:00can find it
36:01and come back
36:02the best fighters
36:05didn't come from
36:06easy upbringings
36:08he would talk about
36:09having a rough childhood
36:10he would talk about
36:11being raised
36:12in a very strict
36:13sort of military way
36:14and rebelling against it
36:16fighting with his dad
36:18dad had drinking problems
36:20growing up
36:20the entirety of our childhood
36:22he was an alcoholic
36:23I'm sure that
36:24adds to why Jason
36:26was acting out
36:27I remember
36:28Jason took a bottle
36:30of something
36:31and dad was drunk
36:32and he threw it out
36:33the back door
36:34and said
36:35you know
36:35you're a really great guy
36:36when you're not drinking this
36:38he had so much rage in him
36:39it was awful
36:40it was just rage
36:41I regret some of the problems
36:43that we had
36:44some of the fights
36:45and arguments
36:47and disagreements
36:48we may have had more
36:49than our share
36:50it's ironic
36:51because
36:52Jason's problems
36:53and the reason he ended up
36:54in jail so many times
36:56had to do with alcohol
36:57over the next decade
36:58Mayhem is arrested
37:00over a dozen times
37:01and ends up incarcerated
37:03twice
37:06once he ended up
37:08going to prison
37:09I would just have to
37:10remind him
37:11that Jason
37:12you're still the same person
37:14even though you're there
37:15and you're around
37:16a lot of darkness
37:17you just got to take the lesson
37:19and keep it moving
37:20there's like horrific things
37:22you see
37:22inside facilities
37:24like many years
37:26blurred together
37:27that's just a place
37:28to like dumb you down
37:29there's like no
37:30stimulation
37:31and you don't learn anything
37:33luckily for me
37:34my father sent books
37:36I would only see him
37:37occasionally
37:38I kind of distanced
37:40myself from him
37:40a little bit
37:41it was quite
37:43difficult for me
37:45this is difficult
37:46it's difficult
37:46you know
37:47you're guarded
37:48about this type of thing
37:49naturally
37:51like you're like
37:52these are hard moments
37:53that I lived
37:56upon his release
37:57Mayhem has nowhere to go
37:59when I got out of prison
38:01nobody picked me up
38:02whoa
38:03that really let me down
38:05that day
38:07I lost everything
38:08literally
38:11the cliche
38:12like nobody paid
38:14the storage unit
38:15nah
38:18trophies
38:18belts
38:19yeah
38:22my life was really
38:23heavy at this time
38:24the whole world
38:26crashing down
38:26on top of you
38:28I know he spent like
38:29a couple days
38:30at Skid Row
38:31on a dirty mattress
38:33this is Los Angeles
38:35the meanest part
38:36of Los Angeles
38:36is right here
38:37thank you
38:39to the people
38:40that cast me off
38:41into that situation
38:42because I might not
38:43have never woke up
38:44from this bad dream
38:45I think he was
38:47having a hard time
38:48thinking that he could
38:49make it on the outside
38:52three months after his
38:53release
38:53Mayhem has a dark
38:55encounter with a fan
38:56in a hotel parking lot
38:58I think he was
38:59a street kid
39:00he thought he could
39:01do jujitsu against me
39:03the fan said
39:05I think I could take you
39:06and I was like
39:07oh you do huh
39:08I said come on
39:09let's do it right now
39:10I gave him the takedown
39:12and the tap out
39:13this is neutral
39:15no cops had to be
39:16involved with that
39:17but they did
39:19that's a violation
39:21of your parole
39:22once you hit that moment
39:24then everything changed
39:34you can't just wrestle
39:36somebody in the parking lot
39:37I could have
39:39seriously injured that boy
39:41it was a big mistake
39:42you're acting
39:43like a youth
39:45time to grow up Mayhem
39:48following his arrest
39:49Mayhem checks himself
39:51into an inpatient
39:52substance abuse program
39:53for 90 days
39:55if you don't have
39:56healthy coping mechanisms
39:58you'll use anything
39:59as an excuse
40:00to drink
40:00to use drugs
40:02to fall away
40:03that's what people do
40:05when they don't know
40:06how to cope
40:06he didn't know
40:07how to cope
40:08he came from a family
40:09didn't know how to cope
40:10Jason had to want
40:11to get better
40:12he had to want
40:13to change
40:14what was occurring
40:14I knew Jason
40:15would be able
40:16to get sober
40:17and get back
40:17on his feet
40:18we are very resilient
40:19we came from resilient parents
40:21and they taught us
40:22to be resilient
40:22I knew he had it in him
40:24yeah
40:24I like
40:25cleaned up my act
40:26it's like a weird
40:29music change
40:30and everything
40:31is happy now
40:32I'm like
40:34kind of basking
40:35in it a bit
40:36to be honest with you
40:37as the new
40:38sober Mayhem
40:39starts to get back
40:40on track
40:40he receives
40:41an unexpected
40:42invitation
40:43Randy Koshior
40:44has an organization
40:45called
40:45Merging Vets
40:46and Players
40:47and he brings in
40:48current and
40:48ex-professional athletes
40:50and veterans
40:51that are all dealing
40:52with PTSD
40:53to drugs and alcohol
40:54Jason is made for
40:56I just walked in
40:57and here he was
40:57and it was really
40:58kind of cool
40:59to reconnect with him
41:00and have him be there
41:00and things are back in line
41:02and he's doing well again
41:03so that's great
41:04the program is
41:05everyone trains
41:06but then afterwards
41:08a huddle
41:08it's like
41:09tough talk therapy
41:10sort of
41:11you learn
41:12that you can help
41:13others
41:13even though
41:14you're hurting too
41:15just knowing
41:16that someone else
41:17knows that you're
41:18going through this
41:19can empower you
41:20my relationship
41:21with him now
41:22is good
41:23I went from
41:24not respecting
41:25his opinions
41:26and desires
41:27to saying
41:28yeah
41:28I respect you son
41:30have you not talked
41:31about your feelings
41:32as your dad
41:32talk about our feelings
41:34can't wait for me
41:36and Mike Miller
41:36to do that
41:37we talk
41:38there's no friction
41:40between the two of us
41:41anymore
41:42so that's good
41:43look
41:44this man called me
41:45every few years
41:46to apologize
41:46for my childhood
41:47I gotta tell him
41:48man you already did that
41:49five years ago
41:50I forgive you
41:52he's just doing
41:53the best he could
41:54with the situation
41:55and with his knowledge
41:57I'm just
41:58glad we got to a point
41:59where we're past
42:00all of the
42:03craziness
42:04Jason Mayhem Miller
42:06is now a mentor
42:07and a coach
42:07for rising MMA stars
42:09Jason going into
42:10coaching athletes
42:11is fantastic
42:12because he's got
42:12a ton of experience
42:14in the sport
42:15he is incredibly
42:16well versed
42:17as far as
42:18the techniques
42:19that work
42:21somebody asked me
42:23like what would
42:23you have wanted
42:24when you were
42:25a young fighter
42:25and I said to them
42:27totally humbly
42:28I would wish
42:29I had a mayhem
42:30in my life
42:31because now
42:31at this age
42:32I can guide
42:33these men
42:34and women too
42:35through
42:36these difficult
42:38things in their career
42:39and shape young
42:41fighters
42:41into champions
42:43it takes a lot
42:44of strength
42:44for someone
42:45who reached the top
42:46then falls back down
42:48knowing what it was like
42:50when to be on top
42:52and then manage
42:53to get the strength
42:54to come back up
42:55it's very spectacular
42:56it's very inspiring
42:57actually
42:58my lifestyle
42:59is now
43:00more exciting
43:01than it ever has been
43:02is very fulfilling
43:03and wholesome
43:04all the time
43:05I think he's much
43:06more aware
43:06of himself
43:07he has taken on
43:09being a family man
43:10forward a little step
43:11I have a stepdaughter
43:13she's awesome
43:15you don't know
43:16how big your love
43:17can get
43:17to share with the kid
43:19it makes him
43:21want to stay
43:22on the straight and narrow
43:23being a good role model
43:24and a good person
43:25for her to be around
43:27it's amazing
43:27what three years
43:29of clear headedness
43:29will do for you
43:30I think his chosen path
43:33was exactly
43:34what he needed to do
43:36it's funny how
43:37much of a fog
43:38I was in
43:39where I didn't think
43:40that could ever
43:41be this happy
43:59we were gods
44:02I'm a storyteller
44:03the people are gonna believe
44:04whatever I tell them
44:05I just think
44:06I go kill this guy
44:07this story right here
44:09is gonna knock you out
44:11they built the sport
44:12I turned myself
44:13into a monster
44:14this is what it cost them
44:16my life
44:17is over
44:18my lawyers
44:18would not appreciate
44:19me doing this interview
44:20apparently he had
44:21killed his girlfriend
44:22Dark Side of the Cage
44:25Tuesdays at 9
44:27on Vice
44:28on Vice
44:28on Police
44:28There's some
