Up to 5,000 people on the north coast of New South Wales were cut off by severe flooding that damaged surrounding roads, prompting government officials to declare the region a natural disaster area. Heavy rains Friday night caused homes to be evacuated, submerged cars and washed debris up onto riverbanks. The seaside town of Coffs Harbour, about 340 miles north of Sydney, had 20 inches of rain in the 48 hours up until Saturday morning local time. Shops became flooded overnight, while SES workers escorted residents from their homes as water levels rose. By Saturday morning some of the water had subsided and shop owners in the booming vacation area were beginning to clean up.
