00:08This is the Vortex Bladeless Wind Turbine, a high-tech modern solution to our energy problem
00:13and an answer to powering homes without massive wind farms.
00:16So how does this harness the energy of the wind?
00:19The slender rocket-shaped device oscillates back and forth in the breeze,
00:22gathering up the kinetic energy in the process.
00:24And because of its simple design with few moving parts,
00:27it doesn't require regular maintenance or large amounts of oil for lubrication,
00:30and all at about 30% the cost of bladed wind energy production.
00:34And that all happens silently, sound being one of the biggest drawbacks of conventional wind turbines.
00:39Co-founder of Vortex Bladeless, David Yanez says he got the idea way back in 2012,
00:43when he watched a video of a 1940s bridge collapse,
00:47having his eureka moment while witnessing the way it oscillated back and forth prior to falling.
00:51And Yanez says these devices can work in tandem with solar panels to provide constant energy,
00:55with the solar panels harnessing the sun during the daytime and when winds pick up at night,
01:00that's when the Vortex Bladeless turbine can begin harvesting its kinetic power.
