15:41older M10 could never have touched. Near Frei Haldenhoven, an M36 from the 702 Tank Destroyer
15:49Battalion knocked out a King Tiger at 1,000 yards with a side shot through the turret.
15:54The King Tiger was the heaviest armoured vehicle the Germans fielded, and the M36 had killed one
16:00at a range where American crews previously had no effective weapon. These reports accumulated
16:05at division and corps headquarters throughout November and December. The pattern was unmistakable.
16:11The M36 Jackson was not just an incremental improvement over the M10, it was a fundamental
16:17shift in American anti-armour capability. For the first time since German Panthers and Tigers
16:23had appeared on the Western Front, American units had a vehicle-mounted weapon that could engage
16:27and destroy heavy armour at distances beyond 1,000 yards. The 90mm gun was achieving kills against

16:40American tank destroyer operations. The original concept had envisioned fast, lightly armoured
16:47vehicles maneuvering to ambush enemy tanks. The M18 Hellcat, with a top speed of 50 miles per hour but

16:59But the reality of fighting in the dense, fortified terrain of Western Germany demanded something
17:04different. The M36, with its powerful gun and proven chassis, answered that need. The demand for M36
17:12Jacksons intensified across every sector of the front. Tank destroyer battalions that still operated
17:17the older M10 pressed for conversion. Infantry and armoured division commanders requested M36 support
17:24for every major operation. Production at the Grand Blanc tank plant in Michigan, where the Fisher
17:30Body Division of General Motors assembled the vehicles, could not keep pace. Every M36 that rolled off the line
17:37was needed immediately. By mid-December 1944, the 814th tank destroyer battalion and the formations it
17:45supported had stabilized the Geilenkirchen sector. The villages of Wohm and Mühlen Dorf fell on December
17:5218th, following weeks of grinding combat. The Siegfried Line fortifications in this part of Germany were
17:58finally broken. The infantry that had fought across open fields under Panther fire could now advance behind

28:19with far more dramatic events from the bulge. But those few lines contained a number that would outlast
28:24everything else in the report. The after-action report for the 814th Tank Destroyer Battalion,
28:30December 1944, was filed with the Adjutant General's Office and eventually deposited in
28:36the National Archives in Washington. It sits today in Record Group 407, the repository for U.S. Army
28:42unit records from the Second World War. The entry for December 1st is brief. It states that a
28:48tank destroyer from the battalion engaged and destroyed a German tank at a range of 4,600 yards.
28:54The target was identified as a Mark V Panther. A separate document, the Report of Tank Destroyer
29:01Operations for November 13th through December 3rd, 1944, provided additional details. It confirmed
29:07the panther identification, reaffirmed the range, and recorded the grid coordinates of the firing
29:12position between Prummern and Sugurath. The direction of fire was noted as high ground northeast of Beek.
29:18The report listed the platoon's map grid numbers, allowing researchers decades later to plot the exact
29:24location on modern maps and calculate the arc of fire across the German-held countryside.
29:304,600 yards, 2.61 miles. It was the longest-confirmed direct-fire,
29:36tank-on-tank engagement of the Second World War. No other verified kill from any army on any front
29:43matched the distance that Lieutenant Alfred Rose achieved on that December morning in Germany.
29:48The shot exceeded the maximum effective range listed in every American gunnery manual. It exceeded the
29:54range at which the 90mm gun had been tested against armored targets. It was accomplished with a weapon

30:05protocol, and no reason to believe the attempt would succeed. The M36 Jackson went on to become one of
30:11the most significant American armored vehicles of the war's final months. Total production across all
30:16three variants, the M36, M36B1, and M36B2, reached approximately 2,300 vehicles. By the spring of 1945,
30:26the M36 had largely replaced the M10 in front-line tank destroyer battalions across the European
30:32theater. Its 90mm gun remained the most powerful weapon mounted on any American fighting vehicle
30:38until the M26 Pershing arrived in small numbers in the war's closing weeks.
30:42The 814th Tank Destroyer Battalion continued fighting after the bulge. The unit crossed the
30:48Rohr River in February 1945, pushed through the Rhineland, and advanced into the German interior.

32:09main battle tanks, not to open-topped specialists. Rose's shot from December 1, 1944 entered the historical

33:30rifled gun. The round struck and destroyed the Iraqi vehicle at a range of 5,100 yards, 3.2 miles.
33:39It became the longest confirmed tank-on-tank kill in recorded history. The margin over Rose's shot was
33:46500 yards. 47 years separated the two engagements. The Challenger 1 carried thermal imaging that detected
33:53heat signatures through darkness and sandstorms. A laser rangefinder measured distance in milliseconds.
