00:00Glaciers are collapsing, lakes are bursting, rivers are turning and the world's experts keep offering the same solutions.
00:10Solar panels, electric cars, tree plantations, another summit, 50 years of summits and emissions higher every decade.
00:19So an honest question must be asked, are we treating the disease or only the fever?
00:25Remember, the climate crisis is treated as a technical problem. Too much carbon, reduce it.
00:30But ask, where does the carbon come from? From burning and the burning from consumption.
00:36Stop here. This is the real question.
00:38There is an emptiness inside the human being and incompleteness everyone knows and no one names.
00:44And the method we have all been taught for filling it is things.
00:49One more car, one more house, one more holiday, one more upgrade.
00:53But there is a flaw in the trick.
00:55Buy it and see.
00:56The emptiness is not filled, only briefly covered.
00:59So the next thing is needed.
01:00Then the next.
01:01The emptiness within is bottomless.
01:03So the demand became bottomless.
01:05And bottomless demand colliding with a finite earth.
01:09That collision is the climate crisis.
01:11And here is why the problem is so hard to hit.
01:14Nobody loves CFCs.
01:15Banning them was easy.
01:17But carbon, everything you love is carbon dioxide.
01:20The tea you love, the drive you love, the flight home you love, consumption is emission.
01:26Between the two there is no gap at all.
01:29This is also why technology alone cannot save us.
01:32Technology makes consumption efficient.
01:34It does not end it.
01:36Engines improved.
01:37Cars quadrupled.
01:39As long as the well inside is thirsty.
01:41Every saving outside drains into new consumption.
01:45And it is why GDP is a deception.
01:48We call an economy healthy precisely when it consumes more.
01:54We have defined progress so that the planet's sickness is our proof of health.
01:59So the crisis is not at bottom in the carbon.
02:03It is in the belief, I am the body.
02:06And multiplying the body's pleasures is life.
02:09As long as that belief stands, man will keep devouring the earth.
02:13He will devour it sitting under a solar panel.
02:16The cure for consciousness is not sold in any market.
02:20It comes from self-observation.
02:22The one who has seen his own mind has seen his own consumption.
02:27And when he learns what no purchase will ever give him,
02:30he stops consuming blindly.
02:33And the emissions fall of their own accord.
02:36He renounces nothing.
02:38His indulgence simply becomes pointless.
02:41Self-knowledge is the last environmentalism.
02:45And in truth, the only one.
02:47To save the earth,
02:49first know the one who is eating it.
