02:20on affordability i do wonder whether you understand why a statement like that lauding fidel castro may
02:28not just turn people off from your platform but offends people who suffered for decades under his
02:34dictatorship many decades of u.s policy at this point have shown that if we want to expand
02:43democracy across the world uh military regime change and economic blockades are not the way to
02:47do it i came of age after iraq was invaded by the united states after afghanistan was and democracy did
02:54not expand there if we want to uh expand free and fair elections anywhere in the world it it's it's
03:01about expanding more a more open policy toward the whole world if we were serious about expanding
03:06democracy in cuba for example uh we could start by going back to the the opening up the economic
03:12reform that happened under the obama sure i i understand i i understand yeah we have a limited
03:20amount of time but i i understand your critique of u.s policy it's not an uncommon one what i'm

03:26to get at is how you think that lauding fidel castro is a good idea and is going to win

03:37uh many people especially younger americans now are looking at the history of what happened in cuba
03:44and what it was like before the cuban revolution where it was one of the most most unequal societies
03:50in the western hemisphere uh people lived under very brutal conditions at under a power structure
03:56where u.s corporations were profiting off of the labor of the cuban people so now keep in mind uh

04:04he means by unfair is um you know some folks being poor some folks being rich some folks being
04:15somewhere in between you know a wide range of outcomes for society that's what he means
04:22that's all of a sudden a horrible thing but you know what's going on currently is the greatest thing
04:27in the world it's the best thing since sliced bread how does that make any sense but that is
04:33the ultimate goal of these folks and i've said this time and time again and when you when you really
04:38sit
04:38back and you just listen to them talk it it it'll it'll come out to you they want ultimate power
04:45and
04:45control that is the goal they know that this this whole utopia bs doesn't actually work they know this
04:56their ultimate goal is power and control if they have the power in the in the control they're set
05:04they're good they're comfortable because they can do whatever they want they have all of the all of
05:09the resources and they can control the people because obviously if you have all of the resources
05:16you can bribe folks you can you can you can punish people by not giving them food
05:20you can do a wide a wide array of things
05:25and so that's one of the things that i've gathered from watching all of these different clips from
05:30all of these different individuals is that when you just sit back and just really listen to them
05:36they know that this isn't going to work but they don't care because that's not their goal for
05:41it to actually work their goal is to come to convince people that it will actually work so that we
05:47give them the power and once we give it to them they're they're never handing it back that's for
05:54darn sure carry on y'all let me know if you agree uh if if we're serious about expanding democracy

06:04going back to the system that existed in cuba before then is not the way to do it it's about
06:09opening up
06:10political and economic reform that starts with free trade ending the brutal embargo that for over 60
06:15years uh under economic sanctions from the united states that have limited trade into cuba that has
06:22been starving the cuban people it's been uh really brutal conditions if we look at what's happening now
06:28uh electricity is being shut down sure food is being uh shut down to cuba so so humanitarian
06:35have you spent much time have you spent much time speaking to have you spent much time speaking to
06:43cubans who have fled the island because of political persecution who endured years under the castro regime
06:50chic uh i i know plenty of people who are especially second and third generation cubans who are finding
06:59things out for themselves and wanting to open up a more open communication open exchange with cubans
07:05and have you spoken to people who were politically persecuted have you spoken to people who were
07:10politically persecuted by the castro regime who fled that island because of it
07:17i have and and there are people who whatever critiques they might have of the cuban government
07:21they don't think that an economic blockade and military intervention is the way to do it i do
07:26wonder how they were opening up about a statement lauding fidel castro though is chic that that's my
07:31concern i get your your criticism of foreign policy as i said it's not an uncommon one but lauding fidel
07:37castro is a different story you talk about what things were like before the revolution in cuba i'll
07:41give you a personal example my grandfather was a revolutionary in cuba during that time he was affected
07:47by a previous dictator fulgencio batista having his friends disappeared in the street for speaking their
07:54minds my grandfather found that revolution hoping to bring democracy to cuba and then what happened
07:58felt like castro locked my grandfather up sentenced to 20 years for doing what you're doing now on
08:04live tv for speaking his mind for expressing himself freely for trying to organize politically
08:09so i wonder again how you think that lands with people who suffered under that dictatorship who now
08:15you were trying to court as voters when your organization comes out and lauds a hundred years
08:20of castro i don't think it would land that well with them chic
08:27we're we're seeing many people in the united states who are who are seeing their who are struggling under
08:35massive inequality in the united states that's greater than back to the talking points we go
08:43mind you we're talking about florida okay which everybody knows florida has a massive
08:55population of cubans and so they've seen this before they understand this they they they they've
09:02heard all of these same things before in the past and now he's trying to bring it back to them
09:08again
09:10yeah that ain't gonna work very well especially since he doesn't really have any answers as you
09:14guys can see he's gone right back to his talking points which make absolutely no sense it's been in
09:21over a century uh inequality in the united states is higher than it's been in the gilded age we're
09:26now returning to something out of statement about fidel castro courts those people
09:33uh we want to expand democracy everywhere in the united states in cuba and everywhere else and that
09:39does not come at the barrel of a gun it doesn't come at uh under under the threat of economic
09:45blockade
09:45that only makes the that that limits democracy everywhere so if we want to improve conditions
09:52for cubans i i wouldn't say that i think that the revolution in cuba uh led to an expansion of
10:02things like universal health care that's that's actually been a model that cuba exports uh medical
10:08care to countries that have uh very poor infrastructure themselves there are things like that that we
10:16could have in the united states the way that it exists in europe or in so many other countries
10:21countries but we don't have that so there are plenty of things that could change and improve
10:25in cuba that cuban people would speak for themselves but cubans have to be the ones deciding cuba's
10:30future and we have to support from the united states what makes that possible which is ending the
10:35embargo ending sanctions if we want freedom of expression or free press elections people can believe
10:40in uh we have to look at the history of u.s intervention there so it's really hard for us
10:45to
10:45say where the effects of cuba's government end and where the effects of the blockade begin and 65
10:51years of strangling an economy what the united states has done what will do that so that's why
10:56lifting sanctions is is what will give cuba the breathing room it needs for for political change
11:00to even be possible and in the united states our concern is expanding the u.s expanding democracy in
11:07the united states which is under threat from the trump administration i think depending on what
11:11economists you speak to there is some disagreement about conditions in cuba how much of it is the embargo
11:16how much is the incompetence of the cuban government nevertheless my question was about fidel
11:20castro being a beacon of democracy i i would suggest that perhaps we should have more conversations
11:25with folks who have fled uh that regime and what they think about uh these statements and and the
11:32position of the dsa nevertheless ashik sadique i appreciate you sharing your perspective thank you

12:50have family in cuba some of them have went through some some terrible things have heard and seen

13:01not going to work and i think more people in america should listen to that should take heed of that
13:07right you know this is coming from folks who some of them have experienced it or have
13:13grandparents that have experienced it have loved ones that have lived in it and they're all like hell
13:18no we ain't going back to that why would we ever want that y'all sound just like the mother
13:24love was back where we came from uh-uh no more people in america should listen to that
13:30you know they're they're literally telling you we heard the exact same things and then everything
13:36went to shit we ain't going back to that and then you got some americans oh yeah let's do it
