The Northern Territory has closed the loop on a three-decade journey to restore voluntary assisted dying laws. During a marathon debate in NT Parliament last night the laws finally passed, bringing the NT in line with other states and territories. But it wasn't without controversy as cracks emerged within the CLP government.

00:06A historic moment after a long session.
00:09We have stood up on behalf of people who so desperately wanted to see the rights of the
00:14termally ill restored and we have done that tonight.
00:17The unanimous vote not without disagreement within the government.
00:21One backbencher wanting to rename the bill entirely.
00:25I don't think you can really call this the rights of the termally ill bill anymore.
00:29Cabinet ministers stuck solid despite a conscience vote shutting down proposed amendments,
00:35including to remove a restriction that only offers VAD to people with less than a year to live
00:41and a bid to ditch a gag clause barring doctors from initiating conversations with patients.
00:48I think this clause is an overreach, trying to use a sledgehammer to knock over one very isolated nut that
00:57may or may not occur.
00:58In my ten years, my decade of being a member of the Northern Territory Parliament, I have never seen a
01:04process as botched as I have today.
01:06I think that's probably a consequence of coming out in advance and supporting a bill, committing to getting it through
01:14before anyone had seen the details.
01:16With the amendments voted down, the bill passed in its original form after nine o'clock.
01:22All members voted in favour with one abstaining, the historic vote coming 31 years after the Territory first passed trailblazing
01:30laws.
01:31The NT Parliament made history in 1995 when it pioneered euthanasia laws.
01:37It's nice to see that democracy is still alive.
01:40Controversially struck down by the Commonwealth two years later.
01:44It was disgusting, pathetic betrayal.
01:47Extremely upset, extremely angry.
01:49Marking the start of a three decade fight to get the laws back.
01:53A case of the first to the last.
01:57Territorians will be able to access voluntary assisted dying in 18 months.
02:01We could hear from the new states.
