00:00Yes, they did, Brad, but boy, did the Cowboys make it competitive and fun in the second half,
00:06climbing all the way back, but they fall 27-24 to put a bow on this preseason,
00:12and now they're going to count as the Cowboys will finish the preseason at 2-1.
00:18The Saints finish 1-2, 27-24 Saints over the Cowboys, but a lot of positives to take,
00:24especially from that second half from Sam Howell and the offense.
00:28The official postgame show brought to you by Pepsi.
00:31Football's back. Tailgating deserves Pepsi.
00:34It's Zach Wulchuk alongside the Super Bowl winning scout.
00:36My buddy, the great Brian Broaddus, great to have you back in the saddle, my friend.
00:40Thank you, sir.
00:41877-881-1053, the number to call, the number to text, 877-881-1053.
00:48We hang out with you until midnight Central tonight.
00:51My goodness, I will say, Brian, I think the biggest takeaway from what we saw in the second half
00:57was, I think we need to have a quarterback conversation, sir.
01:00Yeah, you know, there's a lot of thought about, can you carry three quarterbacks?
01:06You only have to carry two because of some of the other things.
01:10I think there is a legitimate discussion on what needs to be done at the third quarterback.
01:16And you might be in a situation now, too, where if the way teams are, and some of these teams
01:24are very quarterback needy, can you afford to put one or the other out there?
01:29And depending on, you know, where you are, I think that both of these guys have shown up.
01:35I think today, today I was really impressed with Sam Howell because I think Sam Howell had
01:40the lesser of the weapons, if you want to say, you know, with Brown and stuff like that.
01:46And, you know, Joe Milton missed some throws early in the first half.
01:50I think that in the second half, you know, at halftime you asked me, hey, what do you think?
01:54I'm like, I think that Sam Howell's going to get some completions.
01:58He did.
01:58So he'll settle things down.
01:59I think he'll settle things down and play well.
02:01What's unfortunate about the way this game, the way the Cowboys, and I don't think Christian
02:05Parker's going to be too happy with the fact that the Saints had 11 first downs rushing
02:09the ball.
02:10I mean, that's an element of physicality.
02:12I think the bigger disappointment of, and I know we're talking about the quarterback
02:17situation, I think the bigger the disappointment was that Sam Howell was on a little bit of
02:20a roll until that last drive.
02:22You know, the back-to-back touchdowns, they started the half, it really had a couple of
02:27punts in the situation.
02:28But, you know, you were kind of hopeful that Sam Howell would be able to kind of drive him
02:32in.
02:32And really two things.
02:34It was the defense's inability to get the ball back quickly.
02:39You know, the Saints were able to drive and then get the field goal, ultimately the game-winning
02:44field goal.
02:45That's disappointing because you kind of played pretty well.
02:48Sure.
02:48And you had the momentum.
02:49You had the momentum and all that, but you allowed them to drive the ball and go get the
02:53game-winning field goal.
02:54And then you had the opportunity in a two-minute drill to come back, and you just couldn't,
02:59where you'd made some plays the previous two series.
03:02Yeah.
03:02But I think if you're the Cowboys, you know, all along we've talked about two quarterbacks,
03:07two quarterbacks, two quarterbacks.
03:10They might be thinking about this thing, you know, if they keep three quarterbacks, this
03:14is something they might have thought about all along.
03:17And, you know, us in the media were like, oh man, there's other positions.
03:20There's other positions.
03:21But, you know, I wouldn't be surprised if teams are watching your tape and they're looking
03:27at Sam Howell and they're looking at Milton.
03:29And we've even had this discussion on a radio show on 105.3 The Fan on the G-Bag Nation.
03:34The value of Joe Milton.
03:36Last week, how high you felt the value of Joe Milton was.
03:40And you're like, man, is this an opportunity to maybe think about?
03:44But then you go, and it's not that Joe Milton played terrible.
03:47I think Joe Milton just missed some throws that we've seen him make in training camp and
03:52making the previous two preseason games.
03:54So now it's kind of like if Joe makes those throws, maybe it just does kind of solidify
04:00his, you know, the second quarterback, you know, that he's clearly our guy.
04:05Sure.
04:06But this team could, the front office could be, and they're all driving home right now
04:10or they're leaving the locker room, driving home, listening to us, I'm sure.
04:13And they're all going, yeah, you guys think you know.
04:15You don't know.
04:16But you really don't know.
04:17And maybe it was going to be three quarterbacks all along.
04:22I think that both quarterbacks have played really, really well in the preseason.
04:27The opportunity that you and I and our shows got to go out there and watch the guys practice,
04:32I think there was never a day where we were like, gosh, it's a good throw.
04:36It's Joe Milton.
04:37Oh, look at here, Sam Howell making a good throw.
04:39I mean, so I think if they put one of those guys out, it'd be kind of interesting to see
04:45the result of what happens from that.
04:47Yeah, I mean, the 502, Milton's inconsistency will always be an issue.
04:50I like Howell's steadiness, and I think he gives us a better chance of winning if Dak were
04:55to go down.
04:56Certainly, when they signed Sam Howell, that's kind of the feeling that I had, where it's,
05:02okay, if something were to happen and you kind of need somebody, a Cooper Rush situation,
05:07where Dak Prescott week one against Tampa Bay, I want to say it was 2022 maybe, if memory
05:13serves correctly, he hurts his finger or his thumb, and then Howell goes four and one.
05:18You know, if you need somebody to come in and kind of steady things for you, to keep you
05:21afloat, maybe Howell was that guy.
05:22If it's a season-long thing, maybe Milton's the better developmental player, but I think
05:27both of them have showed.
05:28Last week, look, Milton was fantastic.
05:30Yeah, real quick, I got an update on Maris Leofowl broke his forearm.
05:35He did break.
05:35It looked like it was a broken something.
05:37Yeah, it was not his wrist, it was his forearm.
05:39Okay.
05:40That's it.
05:40It's a broken forearm.
05:41So, oh, man.
05:42But yeah, go ahead about the quarterback.
05:44I just want to get that in before I lost my train.
05:45No, I appreciate that.
05:46So, Maris Leofowl, who left the game in the first half, and Christie did as we were wrapping
05:51up there, say, you know, he was in a cast, arm was in a sling, so broken forearm there
05:56for Maris Leofowl.
05:57That would probably be an IR situation.
05:59And I think both of us, when we were kind of putting together our 53 this week, did have
06:02Maris off.
06:04Yeah, it was.
06:05And, you know, but it depended on, too, what Nick Sorensen thought as, how many special
06:09teams guys am I going to get out of this?
06:11Todd Archer brought up an extra point, and we said this because maybe it's interesting
06:15because Marquise Bell played tonight, and Marquise Bell didn't play last week, and you're
06:20kind of thinking, wow, is something going on here with Marquise Bell?
06:23What's the deal?
06:24You know, maybe they didn't want to play him on back-to-back games being a veteran guy.
06:27Maybe they just said, you know what, we know we're going to need him for this last preseason
06:31game.
06:32So that might have been why he didn't play last week, but this week they needed him to play
06:38because they were a little short on some guys, so that's probably why they did what they did.
06:43But anyway, it's a shame about Maris Lee, a foul on the forearm.
06:46You know, hopefully he'll heal up okay, and everything will be as good as new.
06:51But yeah, this quarterback situation, it is one to keep an eye on because, like I say,
06:58there are teams around the league that are watching your tape.
07:01Yeah.
07:01And they clearly have watched and seen how your quarterbacks are playing.
07:07And I think the Cowboys should be very pleased with the way both their quarterbacks played
07:11in the preseason.
07:12Certainly.
07:13And what held in the second half, I mean, the numbers speak for themselves, but you look
07:16at the fourth quarter, three plays, 80 yards, touchdown.
07:19Twelve plays, 67 yards, touchdown.
07:21It was unfortunate, the two-minute drill certainly wasn't held through a couple of drops.
07:26And the offensive line wasn't really holding up in protection.
07:29No, but the previous two drives they had.
07:32They were zipping down.
07:33And credit Jordan Hudson, I mean, a couple of great catches for the SMU Mustang.
07:38Just some brilliant football on his part.
07:40And now LSU's probably going to be trying to get him back to go to college.
07:43Yep, yep.
07:44You know, or maybe SMU will.
07:45That's going to be a fascinating conversation, as that was reported earlier this week.
07:48But Jordan Hudson was really good today.
07:51How many receivers are you going to keep?
07:52I know that's going to be a conversation.
07:54Phil Moff ended up being your leading rusher, 12 for 46.
07:57Do you think it was telling?
07:58Jaden Blue was dressed.
08:00Jaden Blue didn't play.
08:01Right.
08:02So I would lead that if I'm just connecting dots.
08:05Yeah, Davis didn't play either.
08:06Yeah, so you've got Williams, Davis, Blue, Lipke.
08:12I think that's where you're going to go.
08:14And then maybe you can get Moff back on the practice squad of Bonaconda, 7 for 16, Corbin, 3 for
08:2014.
08:21And then, of course, you had the quarterbacks.
08:23Then Tyler Johnson, the wide receiver, getting a run.
08:25But one other great note.
08:27I thought this was a pretty cool story.
08:28The tight end that was signed, formerly the New England Patriots and former track star converted to football player, Mitch
08:35Van Voren, he ends up with a touchdown.
08:37Signed earlier this week and ended up with a really nice touchdown in that fourth quarter.
08:41He sure did.
08:41And credit to him for coming in and not getting a lot of practice reps and then being able to
08:46go out there and function and run routes, try and help his team.
08:50You know, he'll probably be put on waivers on Sunday, but, you know, he did give it a good look.
08:55And maybe it's one of those things where maybe if you're a practice squad situation.
08:59I will say on the tight end, the other side of things, though, the disappointed way that Trigg played.
09:03And Trigg coming off the toe injury and stuff like that, not trying to slam the kid here and stuff
09:09like that.
09:09Unfortunately, he missed time.
09:11But there's people that really do believe in this guy.
09:14They really do.
09:15They feel like, hey, man, this is, you know, the fact that Schoonmaker didn't dress tonight.
09:20You know, is it already been a, is it already a done deal that Schoonmaker is going to be the
09:25third tight end and Trigg is probably going to be put on waivers?
09:29I don't think, you know, depending on how things are, I don't think they can carry four tight ends.
09:33I think Hunter Lipke is kind of your guy.
09:35Sure.
09:35They found a way to play with, like, extra, and during the season, they've done it.
09:40They've done it before.
09:41Shoddy, they'll play with the extra tackle as being an extra tight end type player.
09:46So, yeah, unfortunate Trigg.
09:48A big game tonight could have really gone a long way, but coming off that toe injury, he looked a
09:54little hampered out there.
09:54I know, it was a bummer.
09:55I was a big fan of his coming down to Baylor.
09:56Maybe he can make the practice squad, but I do agree with you.
09:59I think that's probably looking like what your tight end group is.
10:01He just didn't do enough to really push Schoonmaker and save the spot.
10:04He really did, and missing that time really hurt him.
10:07Yeah, same with D.J. Rogers, who didn't play tonight again, the rookie from TCU.
