Partial lunar eclipse visible across parts of US and Canada
The moon turned a dusky red over the U.S. and Canada on Thursday (August 27) as it moved into Earth's shadow during a near-total lunar eclipse. The eclipse reached its peak when 96.3% of the moon's disk was covered by Earth's shadow, offering sky watchers a striking celestial display. As the moon passes through the Earth's cone-shaped shadow, it moves from full illumination into near darkness. Some sunlight, however, continues to reach the lunar surface after being filtered and bent through Earth's atmosphere, giving the moon its reddish hue, often referred to as a "blood moon". The eclipse was visible across most of the Americas, except for Alaska and northwestern Canada.
