A fresh and potentially five-times more severe flood threat has emerged in Nepal’s Nuwakot, with police asking residents near the riverbank to evacuate. Authorities warned that floodwaters could reach the area within 20-25 minutes, reportedly following water discharge upstream. Police made announcements urging people to move to safer locations. The warning comes as Nepal continues to recover from recent flooding, raising fears of another major disaster in the region and prompting heightened vigilance among residents.

00:00A fresh threat of the flood water coming toward the populated areas of Nepal has come in.
00:06Ashutosh Mishra is joining me live from Nepal in one of these areas.
00:09Ashutosh, where are you presently?
00:11And I hope you're not in the danger zone.
00:13What are you hearing?
00:14There's a second threat that has come in.
00:17Where are you?
00:18Are evacuations being done?
00:23Well, this is the last point towards Kathmandu where the road has been washed away.
00:27I'm in Nuwakoti, it's the Dhongi area.
00:29And right, you see all the heavy machinery in Pooja are moving back.
00:33They were all in the road connectivity operations.
00:36These machines were just 300 meters where I am.
00:38They were already restoring the connectivity.
00:41Even the officials, police vehicles, everyone is moving in a huge number.
00:45All these areas, eventually these shops were operational.
00:47Everything now has been shut down.
00:49So police issued a warning that any moment from now since there were glacier formation,
00:54the lake formation and one of such lake has breached already.
00:57There was a warning on the Bhotekashi River and there is another river that around 2 million cubic meter formation
01:05of lake.
01:05That was eventually one of them has literally broke.
01:08And now the Trishuli River, which is the key factor of this massive flooding and devastation across the Trishuli terrain,
01:14is now reaching out and once this area, even official even said that this could be even five times higher.
01:20So we should be going as high as around 100 to 200 feet from the existing level.
01:25So we already marked to ourselves on a little higher edge.
01:27These machineries who were on the operation have come down.
01:29In fact, the road that goes further towards Trishuli and Anuha Kota have been blocked, barricaded by the police officials.
01:37No one is allowed.
01:38Constantly vigil is being made.
01:39Constantly alarm is being issued.
01:41The police is making siren and awareness and, you know, alerting people.
01:44And there's a massive operation now underway.
01:46Because any moment from now, it could again bring a mayhem already.
01:50The, you know, the country which is affected by this devastation is yet to recover.
01:56And then we see within three days, that's the second, you know,
01:59What is the scale of tragedy?
02:00And you've been to Nepal several times for different reports.
02:04There have been political issues though.
02:06What level are we looking at of the tragedy there in Nepal, Ashutosh?
02:15Tragedy, since we see already, Puja, in three days, the number is reaching near 500.
02:19Missing persons every day are adding to, you know, in hundreds, not in just a couple of dozen.
02:24And clearly, if I could just see what had happened in March 2015,
02:28though it was mostly largely affected in the valley of Kathmandu, that was affected.
02:32Here, the geographical terrain in the mountain areas,
02:35and these mountain areas are around the year heavily crowded.
02:39Often it is for the religious pilgrimage, for the monsoon yatra,
02:41on other occasions for the tourist, international tourists.
02:44This is one of the most beautiful terrain of Nepal.
02:47And Indochina border, again, that's a logistic, you know,
02:50the road transport for Nepal and China both as well.
02:54So, in a pocket which was flooded by thousands,
02:56we still have the number only in hundreds.
02:58Many of the people still missing, and many do not even know who all are missing.
03:02I see those emotion and commotion at the rescue basis where the people are being brought.
03:06So, number could be way much higher.
03:08All these markets, bazaar, kasbah, gaon,
03:11there were, you know, there were thousands of people living.
03:13And since all have turned in a ghost town, clearly it will take time.
03:17But for now, their officials, their first priority is for the search, rescue and evacuate.
03:24Once this operation completes, only then they will be able for the restoration and the relief operation.
03:30And gradually, over the days and weeks,
03:32probably the real number of this scale of disaster will come out, Pooja.
03:36Listen, my friend, you stay safe.
03:38Thank you for your ground reports.
03:39Looking forward to more voices.
03:41And we are putting out all the ground reports that Ashutosh is sending us from Ground Zero.
03:45There's another flood alert.
03:47Now, this time, at least there's an alert already that's coming,
03:50which means evacuations can be done.
03:52Alternate arrangements can be made as well.
03:53Rachel Kill.
03:53Welcome to the noch.
03:53Talk to the next day.
