00:00We saw a lot of people online automatically assume Calvin Torres ACL on the MetLife Stadium turf.
00:06It was actually on the grass practice field. Does it matter when it comes to these ACL and
00:12knee injuries on the grass versus turf debate? This has been something that's been talked about
00:17for many years, turf versus grass. There's a lot of scientific literature looking at the
00:23incidence of ACL tears and other lower extremity injuries when players, particularly American
00:27football and soccer, play on turf versus grass. There's some studies that showed that there's
00:32a higher incidence of ACL injuries with turf, but those were all on the old turf. The newer
00:37artificial turf is a lot higher quality, so the difference between natural grass and turf
00:41has definitely lessened a bit. But where there's smoke, there's fire. People were talking about
00:45turf a lot because there was suggestion of a higher injury rate with those older turf material.
00:49Is there a difference in the treatment for one of your patients versus Calvin's?
00:56There's definitely unique considerations you got to take when you take care of high-level
00:59collegiate professional athletes. Obviously, you're going to be much more aggressive in
01:03timing of surgery and getting them back into early and aggressive rehabilitation.
01:08I treat a lot of patients, anywhere from sedentary older patients to weekend warriors to high-level
01:13collegiate professional athletes. If a patient is older, a little less demand, all they'll do is walk
01:18their dog and go to work. I tell them they don't always need an ACL surgery for that. But anyone
01:22who's
01:23younger, higher activity level wants to get back to sport, the ACL is a critical stabilizing
01:27structure. And I treat all my patients typically the same.
