00:00This has been described as a historic milestone for the people of Syria and for Syria as a country as
00:04well.
00:05This is a big turning point. We shouldn't underestimate that.
00:08So this effectively is the last major sanction which has been removed from Syria and the Syrian government and even
00:15the Syrian economy.
00:16So what it does, it takes away legal and compliance risks.
00:21It allows Syria to effectively from now deal with the Western banks, institutions, go and seek out loans, be provided
00:34with more government support as well.
00:36It also lets them, and you've also got to remember with these, there is no snapback which can be triggered.
00:43So that means that they can change it anyway.
00:44So if, you know, in theory, with snapback, Congress or the Senate can step in and then ensure that it
00:52is immediately re-triggered.
00:55These sanctions are now gone.
00:56And if you want to reinstate them, you've got to go through, again, Congress, Senate, and then the president as
01:03well, the White House.
01:04So, you know, this is a major opportunity now for Syria.
01:08It means that multinationals can move in and do deals in Syria directly, which is, you know, again, a major
01:15part of what they want to do when it comes to reconstruction.
01:18A lot of multinationals have already been eyeing this for some time, and they've already been going in indirectly, but
01:24now they can go in directly as well.
01:26So you can also see now Syria as well being able to go out to the market to buy technology,
01:31which is dual use.
01:32So there's a lot of benefits for the country, and again, it's another step in terms of what they are
01:38trying to do when it comes to reconstructing Syria after what effectively was a decade and a half of civil
01:43war.
