00:00Of course we know that bird flu is here. We know we can't stop it, but we really want to
00:05put the
00:05penguin colony in the best possible place to ensure that they are protected as much as possible
00:11from the strain of bird flu that is, we know, impacting so many species right across the country.
00:17We've started on some of the quieter penguin pathways. We've now moved to the western end of
00:22the penguin array where the larger numbers are and it's working really well. It starts with
00:27catching the rafts that come up. We then corral them, transfer them into holding pens and once
00:33we're satisfied that we've caught all the things we can for that night, we then start the processing.
00:37And that's the process of moving them from the holding pens to a handler who then weighs and
00:42measures the penguin. We then microchip it, vaccinate it and then release it on its way back home to a
00:47Spiro. This is the first time that anyone around the world has attempted something like this of
00:52this scale. So naturally our team took some time earlier in the week in testing, planning, trialing,
00:58different methods of being able to roll out this vaccination program. And over the last three or
01:03four nights they've really been ramping that up and have had some great nights in terms of numbers.
01:09We're hopeful that by the end of tonight we will have reached our thousand penguins
01:14vaccinated across Phillip Island and across the Kilda.
