00:00We're here today in the Armoured Orchard at Den of Coles in Griffith to push the importance of bees and
00:04the impacts that we're dealing with right now with this second incurrence of the virile mite.
00:09From the first one in June 22 to this second one that come in April this year, it's very concerning
00:14how a second incurrence can happen.
00:17The impacts that it's having on our industry very, very quickly, like people are losing hundreds of hives within weeks,
00:24whereas the original virile mite that didn't have the resistance, our synthetic treatments would give us a six to eight
00:30week duration and be very effective.
00:33And now we're seeing and hearing stories of beekeepers losing their bees within weeks.
00:38And now we've got to be using organic treatments, which is very labour intensive.
00:43A lot of anxiety and concern with beekeepers is the treatments, organic treatments are single use.
00:48And if we were to follow the labels, we'd lose our bees within six weeks.
00:52So we're calling on the government to, and we acknowledge the 67 million that was put up,
00:58but this virile mite, the second incurrence, is having huge impacts on our industry at the moment.
01:02And it's going to have a roll-on effect to the pollination-dependent industries.
01:06There has been reports on Armoured Orchards being short this year.
01:09And then you can go into cherries, blueberries, avocado, macadamias, and right down to lucerne and clover,
01:15which will then start affecting livestock.
01:18So we just had a meeting with Tara Moriarty last week,
01:21and we're calling on assistance to try and help beekeepers get through this initial stage
01:26to keep providing these services.
