Mirzapur star Harshita Gaur sits down for an exclusive conversation with Asianet Newsable, opening up about her journey from Sadda Haq to the blockbuster Mirzapur franchise and the much-awaited theatrical film.

In this candid conversation, Harshita talks about stereotypes in the entertainment industry, choosing roles with balance and whether she would ever take up a negative character despite her personal sense of right and wrong.

Harshita believes stereotypes were more common in the past, while social media has now allowed audiences and filmmakers to know actors beyond their on-screen image. According to her, this can open doors to a wider variety of roles. However, she also points out that social media comes with its own disadvantages.

What does Harshita really think about playing morally grey or negative characters? How has the industry changed? And what are the challenges that come with being more visible on social media?

00:00This time, it's a little sensitive for Indian cinema right now because actors are questioned on the basis of right
00:07and wrong.
00:08Morality has taken an altogether different center stage.
00:11Do you as an actor sometimes feel that you will be able to pick a negative character?
00:16Something that's not on the right side like let's say for example, filled with misogyny or being not so great.
00:22Would you still empathize with it as an actor?
00:24Will you go ahead with it or will you think about what your fans think?
00:27You know in fact, I feel the opposite. Stereotypes used to exist a lot more before.
00:33You know somebody, some actors has consistently done some negative noise let's say.
00:38So, we started associating that person with the character because we would feel this person is only bad because he
00:44had no idea of that human being.
00:46Now, thanks to social media people not only people see you in characters but they also know the real you.
00:53They get an insight to who you are.
00:55So, then that is actually easier not to stereotype you because they can and not to feel that okay because
01:03you've done this certain kind of character so this is the person you are.
01:06Because they get an insight to our lives.
01:08So, I think that actually is an advantage.
01:12But also disadvantage in a way which is like for example, if you have a certain image as a human
01:20being on screen and let's say if you are picking up roles that are absolutely opposite to your personality then
01:27sometimes it could be difficult for people to buy you on screen.
01:30So, basically have a balance. I would just say I think stereotypes are reducing way by.
01:37So, we don't think we can do it.
01:40So, hopefully we can do this, we can do that.
01:44So, that's it.
01:45So, thank you.
