00:03This is one of only two northern white rhinos left in the world.
00:07The hyper endangered creature is effectively extinct.
00:11But now researchers say they've done the impossible and it could allow the species to live on.
00:16Researchers with BioRescue have just announced that an in vitro produced northern white rhino embryo
00:20was successfully transferred into a southern white rhino surrogate mother.
00:24And that pregnancy is going well and it's developing normally.
00:27This is Thomas Hildebrandt, head of reproduction at the Leibniz Institute for Zoo and Wildlife Research.
00:33We achieved together and that's really important.

00:39We achieved together something which was not believed to be possible.
00:44We really made the impossible possible.
00:47And today we can report that.
00:50And that is really a milestone to allow us to produce northern white rhino calves in the next two, two
00:57and a half years.
00:58The last male northern white rhino on earth died back in 2018.
01:01And the two remaining females can no longer carry children, painting a grim future for the species.
01:07However, through conservation measures and in vitro fertilization,
01:10they hope this will be able to bring the species back from the brink.
01:13Northern white rhinos have long been hunted by poachers for their horns, decimating their population.
