00:03Well, after a couple of failed attempts by other private firms over the last couple of years,
00:08a U.S. built spacecraft has successfully landed on the moon once again.
00:12This video was recently released by Intuitive Machines, the company behind the lander.
00:16The craft was launched aboard a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket around a week ago,
00:20where it then made the nearly 240,000 mile journey to the moon.
00:24What we can confirm, without a doubt, is our equipment is on the surface of the moon,
00:29and we are transmitting. So, congratulations, I am team.
00:33The lander is named Odysseus, and it's the first U.S. craft to land on the moon in more than
00:37half a century.
00:38It made a lunar touchdown near the South Pole, an area of increasing interest to astronomers,
00:42as it is believed to have possibly the highest concentrations of lunar ice.
00:46However, the whole thing did not go off without a hitch,
00:49as the spacecraft's autonomous landing system failed just before arrival,
00:52and engineers were forced to manage a workaround.
00:54This was all part of a NASA-funded mission,
00:57all ahead of a human moon transit expected in just a few years.
01:01Of course, this is all part of NASA's broader goal to establish a human base on the lunar surface,
01:05a jumping-off point to an eventual Mars mission.
