00:08The apartment is located in the 20th district of Paris. It's called the Belleville area.
00:16This is a village-like area rich in diversity of people and buildings.
00:24It is a hilly place where you can catch some beautiful views of the Paris landscape.
00:36This is our apartment.
00:40My girlfriend Clementine and I live here.
00:47Originally, the apartment is about 24 square meters and together with the mezzanine, it's now a 31 square meters apartment.
01:05As Parisian prices are really high, we were looking for an apartment that was affordable.
01:11The apartment is located in a tiny and modest building of two floors, which was built in the end of
01:18the 19th century.
01:23When we first found the apartment, it was a tiny dark three rooms apartment.
01:29There were no toilets nor showers and the ceiling was quite low, everything was run down and dirty.
01:40We removed every wall, closet and ceiling from the space.
01:44Removing all of the ceiling gave us a lot more volume vertically and because of that,
01:50we added a mezzanine to the apartment by making a compact furniture unit to include the bedroom,
01:56the bathroom, the walking wardrobe and all of our bookshelves and closets.
02:03We added three skylights into the apartment to maximize the natural light into the space.
02:12Getting into the apartment, you're greeted by a generous double-story height space
02:17and exposed all beams and lots of lights.
02:23Our main goal was to make this apartment the most sustainable and economical for us.
02:29We did most of the renovation by ourselves so we could save money and take good care of the details
02:35and also improve our building skills.
02:38We used a lot of French pine plywood.
02:41Not only is it economical but also very durable and aesthetically pleasing.
02:47We like the idea of simplicity, irregularity and imperfection.
02:53Almost all of our furniture are simple and meaningful things that we inherited or found in the street.
03:00For example, the closet handles are from my grandparents' kitchen
03:04that I took when they passed away and their flat was sold.
03:11Next to the main window in the apartment marks the beginning of the living space.
03:17We designed the wooden volume of the mezzanine, bathroom and wardrobe space
03:22that allows the living to extend to a more intimate space in front of the bookshelf.
03:30There are five identical 45 cm bookshelf sections centered around our old integrated sound system
03:38and two 60 cm doors we made ourselves.
03:43To leave maximum space in the living and kitchen,
03:46the mezzanine ladder is foldable and movable attached to a thin cream rail.
03:53By pulling the ladder, you get quite comfortable access to the mezzanine.
03:59It is a simple, warm, wooden space with a bed hidden behind the bookshelf.
04:06We built a wooden box with plywood to form a bed head that insulates us from the wall
04:12and allows us a place to put our books or alarm clock.
04:17We added a skylight to allow more natural light into the apartment
04:21and provide a little window to the skyscape.
04:27The bathroom is designed around a small window.
04:31It is a very small bathroom, but we wanted it to feel generous,
04:36so we chose to use white tiles, white tap and white shower head to reflect the light.
04:43To bring a sparkling element into this white room,
04:46we used a survival blanket as a shower curtain.
04:50We love the warm, shiny, golden reflections that it brings all over the space.
04:58During the construction, we found an old and broken sink,
05:02so we decided to use it and we really like its cracks and its timeless look.
05:07We also used an old mirror that belonged to Clementine's grandparents.
05:15The walking wardrobe is a compact and efficient space.
05:20We created a small bench to sit on and take off our shoes.
05:26The walking wardrobe and the bathroom were also designed as a buffer space
05:31to filter noise from the neighboring apartments and the common spaces.
05:38The kitchen is the feature of the apartment.
05:42We wanted to have a large workspace to cook together.
05:46It has cooktop, oven and fridge.
05:49We also kept the old cracked sink from the original apartment.
05:57Even though it's compact, we made sure it has a lot of storage below the kitchen bench.
06:03We kept the wall free from clutter and hanging cupboard and we designed this funny wooden boot
06:10shaped extractor hood.
06:13We also asked a ceramist friend to create the handles from the kitchen cabinets.
06:18We used a washable shiny paint as a splash back over three lines of white tiles,
06:24the same as we used in the bathroom.
06:28In the dining space, we have Clementine's grandfather's old workshop table,
06:33where we can generously feed six people.
06:39Designing a small space is about choosing what's really meaningful for you.
06:44By choosing what's really important, you make these functions easy for everyday life.
06:50If you have a tiny space, it might mean that you have few pieces of furniture.
06:56So I like the idea of including them in the project,
07:00so you can give them the space and place they deserve.
07:05As we live knowing the important effects of climate change on our future city living,
07:12living in a small space can contribute many positive solutions.
07:16It is easier to heat or cool and to clean.
07:20It also needs less material to build and it helps to stop the urban spreading.
07:27As living in the city is also closer to amenities,
07:31it prevents the excessive use of cars and keeps the city centers active and lively.
07:39An ideal situation would be to combine tiny private livings and diverse bigger
07:45common spaces for shared facilities and activities in the same building or block,
07:51and also lots of public spaces in the neighborhood we live in.
08:06The apartment is located in 18th district in Paris.
08:13It's located near Montmartre which is a beau area in Paris.
08:18Sacré-Cœur is about five minutes away and you can actually see it from the apartment.

08:31My name is Bertie Borgia. I'm an architect and founder of OVO Studio.
08:38I was influenced by the style of the 70s.
08:41I love the works of Danish architect Alvar Aalto and American mid-century architects.
08:49Their use of colors and natural materials such wood, beige and white create such a light and warm space.
09:05The building was built in the 60s.
09:09It is in the center of the district and is close to shops, cafes, bakeries and supermarkets.
09:21The apartment was last renovated, sometimes in the 90s, but the layout had not changed since the apartment was built
09:29in the 60s.
09:31The clients are a young and dynamic couple.
09:34They were looking to close off the terrace to create a bedroom and increase the area of the apartment.
09:42We removed all of the internal walls in the apartment.
09:46We were able to obtain permits to convert one of the terraces into a bedroom.
09:53The new kitchen was moved to the space of the old bathroom.
09:58The old kitchen was opened up to the living room.
10:01And the bathroom moved to part of the original living room.
10:06The other terrace was kept as an outdoor space.
10:18At the entrance of the apartment, there is a small closet.
10:23The upper half of the closet is white and hides the electric box.
10:31The bottom half is made from curved okume, a wood from Africa.
10:37This wooden part extends to create a counter for kids when entering the apartment.
10:44The floor in the apartment is made from painted micro cement.
10:51The kitchen was moved to the center of the apartment.
10:55We kept the window that originally looked out to the old terrace to allow light to filter through.
11:03The placement of the window helps to bring in light from the north.
11:08As the window sits between the wall, we were able to create some shelves to place kitchen items and decorations.
11:16This also helps with privacy when there are objects placed on the shelves.
11:22The countertop and backsplash is made from polished concrete.
11:26We wanted the look of a single continuous material here.
11:32The floor to ceiling pantry has lots of space for food and other household items.
11:39There was an awkward spot in the corner of the kitchen.
11:43So we added shelves for commonly used items.
11:47It also hides the corner and electronics from view.
11:51The kitchen is made from the same okume wood as the rest of the apartment.
11:57The ceiling in the kitchen is dropped slightly because of the electrical wiring.
12:03So we created a fun curve for a smoother transition from the entrance.
12:08It also curves around the structural beam.
12:12On the other side of the kitchen is the dining area.
12:17Bright and hairy with a window that looks out onto the terrace.
12:21The circular dining table was chosen to allow for a better flow of movement and softens up the straight lines
12:30of the room.
12:36We designed a custom L-shaped bench sofa that's wrapped around the corner of the living room.
12:43The bench has a slight curve toward the floor.
12:46It makes the sofa more ergonomic and less heavy.
12:51There is a storage underneath.
12:55The sofa is quite spacious and a bit of luxury in a small apartment.
13:00It can be used as an extra bed.
13:05Above the sofa bench, we added floating shelves on both sides of the old fireplace.
13:12The living room is filled with natural light from the large glass doors that lead to the terrace.
13:20In the summer months, the door can be left open to integrate the terrace with the rest of the apartment.
13:27The terrace is quite spacious for an apartment of this size.
13:33Artificial grass was used for the floor and a bamboo wall was used around the sides
13:38to give the space a more organic feel and provides a bit of privacy.
13:48We separated the toilet from the bathroom in order to keep the bathroom and bedroom private.
13:55The wallpaper was chosen by the clients and we took the dark navy from the shades in the wallpaper
14:02to use it on the walls.
14:09The new ensuite bathroom was designed to share the same space as the bedroom.
14:16Even behind some curtains, by the entrance of the bathroom, there is the laundry space.
14:23The client wanted a full-size bathtub.
14:27Using the space behind the toilets, we custom-made a bathtub and shower.
14:33Small light blue tiles were chosen for the floor, countertop and shelves.
14:40The vanity is from the same Okume wood as the rest of the apartment.
14:45We like the interesting grain of the wood, so we made cuts from a large piece to match the grain
14:51and create a seamless look.
14:53With the bathroom and bedroom almost sharing the same space, the two rooms feel like a cozy cabin on a
15:00sleeper train.
15:03At the other end is the bed.
15:07We custom-built a bedhead with a small ledge to place items on at night.
15:14There is also storage under the bed.
15:24I think it's very important to deal with urban sprawl
15:29by encouraging residents not to buy in newly built homes but to purchase existing ones.
15:37It allows us to keep the heritage designs of the apartments and the buildings.

16:37This apartment is located in the center of Paris.
16:42It's about 200 meters from the historical Opéra Garnier.
16:49The street is in the heart of a dynamic district.
16:53It's a business area during the day and at night.
16:57It becomes a cultural center point.
17:03My client is a young professional.
17:05He bought his flat two years ago and he lived there with his partner.
17:10Initially, the apartment didn't meet his requirements,
17:13but he really appreciated the district as well as the very rare access to the quite large balcony,
17:19with beautiful views on the façade of Paris.
17:31The building was built during the French Revolution of 1789.
17:37It always had a mix of residential and commercial functions.
17:44Different dwellers are living in this building now, from young couples, families,
17:50and older people who have stayed here for over 40 years.
17:55This particular project is located on the fifth floor.
18:02When we found the apartment, the overall heritage style was already lost.
18:08It felt completely disproportionate.
18:11The other main issue came from the lack of natural light,
18:15as this apartment has only two windows on the street side and one small skylight.
18:22The owner wanted to have a larger living room, a functional kitchen,
18:27and get natural light in all spaces.
18:30Our first intention was to eliminate the existing kitchen,
18:34and to make it the bedroom, in the darkest area of the apartment.
18:38We installed a translucent glass wall with oblique line in the middle of the apartment.
18:44It has the function of a bathroom, and act as a bridge between the sleeping and the living area.
18:51Our goal was also to create a large living area, open on the balcony,
18:56and to promote natural light in the whole apartment.
19:02When opening the door, you have a perspective from the entrance through the living room,
19:07and opening onto the balcony.
19:10We installed a storage area right at the entrance for shoes, coat, or administrative files.
19:19We installed a cork wall, where our client can paint pictures, photos,
19:24and this way easily personize and change the decoration.
19:30We kept the design of the living room very minimal,
19:34with a generous space for several people to comfortably hang around.
19:39We installed a multifunctional bench in black wood along the wall.
19:45It has been designed with two levels, and appears to be levitating above the floor.
19:53The upper side has a seating function for dining area.
19:59The lower side works as a sofa.
20:03We decided to reuse tiles from the bathroom to create open shelves.
20:08The square tiles create a geometrical structure highlighting objects inside.
20:16The kitchen is very functional with a wide stainless steel bench top and a lot of storage.
20:23It's fully equipped with an oven, a dishwasher, and a black ceramic cooktop.
20:31There is a dedicated hidden space for microwave oven and a built-in fridge.
20:41We installed a white floating shelf above the kitchen for the owner to display his personal belongings.
20:48The recesses covered with black tiles work as a mirror for the white one in the living room.
20:56We also designed a movable kitchen island.
20:59This custom-made furniture piece is made of recycled plastic.
21:04It provides more workspace and storage to the kitchen,
21:08so the residents can move it whenever they want to have more floor space.
21:14The glass wall with oblique lines is the feature of the room.
21:19The kitchen facades on the living room bench are in black in color,
21:24matching the structure of the feature glass wall.
21:29The sleeping area is at the darkest end of the apartment.
21:35Separated by a double glazing door, it can act like a nose barrier yet to allow natural light to come
21:41through.
21:43The entrance works as an extension of the bedroom providing the sensation of increased space
21:49when the door is opened.
21:56The whole bedroom is painted in blue clay.
22:00This special paint made of limestone bits makes the paint look vibrant even in low light situation.
22:08The blue paint also tend to blend in the edge of the wall and ceiling, creating an intimate space.
22:19We also have a working wardrobe in the bedroom with two accesses.
22:25We had to accommodate four structural wooden poles standing right in the middle.
22:30Finally, it helped increase the linear storage in the constrained space.
22:36We also incorporated the laundry space at the back for functionality.
22:44Our client wanted to have an open bathroom.
22:48This space is very minimalist with white tiles covering the walls, the doors, the floor and the ceiling.
22:59The white sink has a rectangular shape matching with the geometrically clean sensation in the room.
23:05All topware are in black matching the toilet hidden behind.
23:12The toilet is designed like a black room at the back of the apartment to increase the feeling of intimacy.
23:22During daytime, the bathroom is bringing light to the bedroom.
23:27At night, it becomes a light box illuminating the entire apartment.
23:35We have always been city guys.
23:38Cities offer enormous opportunities, cultures and collaboration and growth for people, especially for young people.
23:47Developing comfortable, enjoyable and affordable tiny living spaces is critical to maintain social diversity in today's largest cities.
23:59Culturally, most French would prefer to own their own home instead of renting.
24:06With the increase of the price of the square meters in big cities,
24:10small apartments can be the opportunity for people to access the property market and have a place to call home.
24:28We used to live in the apartment below this one.
24:32We owned the attic and we were having a child.
24:36We decided we would investigate whether we could uplift the roof and build a new apartment on top of the
24:43existing one.
24:46We wanted to have one main bedroom for us, plus a separate soundproof bedroom for our baby.
25:03The apartment is located close to Porte d'Ivry, one of the many gates of Paris.
25:11The neighborhood is home to a mix of cultures with many cafes, restaurants, bars and interesting public places.
25:22There are large avenues with big buildings and also narrow streets with tiny houses.
25:32We don't exactly know when the building was erected.
25:35It may have been in the 1870s. It has always been a building for families of workers.
25:43At some point, one family owned the whole building.
25:47They later split it up and sold them as separate apartments.
25:53We made friends with our neighbor from the upper floor and talked to him about uplifting the roof.
26:00And we decided to do this adventure together.
26:03The process of extending the building took so long that actually my wife gave birth to our daughter only two
26:11weeks after the construction started.
26:14On the first floor, we have a living, dining, kitchen, bathroom, laundry and staircase.
26:21We also added a small terrace to enjoy the views of the neighborhood.
26:25The second floor has our baby's nursery and our main bedroom.
26:33When entering from the common staircase, the door opens to the main space.
26:39The main space is open plan and has a living, dining, kitchen.
26:45We wanted to give it an additional sense of volume, so it has an open staircase, two zones with higher
26:52ceilings and a double height above the kitchen dining space with a skylight.
26:58The floor across this level is a composite steel concrete slab.
27:03We decided to cover the concrete with a pale-gris epoxy resin.
27:09It makes for a continuous space with no joints at all.
27:14The living room takes up a corner of the main area.
27:18It features three original togo sofas by designer Michel Ducarrois.
27:23The brown one is from the 70s and was given to me by my grandmother who bought it in a
27:28flea market.
27:29We stumbled upon the two other pieces on the road while jogging in Paris and had them re-upholstered.
27:37The living room features two black AG wall lamps, a round mirror that I made,
27:42and an ancient dresser with a marble top that belonged to my grandmother and has been in my family for
27:48over a century.
27:51The living space leads to the terrace with a step that we also store things underneath.
27:56We made it with the same wood as the stairs and covered it with a black stone slab salvaged from
28:03the destruction of the chimney.
28:05The terrace has panoramic views of the bell tower and surrounding neighbourhood.
28:11We love to come out here in the summer and enjoy the weather.
28:16The kitchen is L-shaped.
28:18We decided to have all of our cabinets low so that the space feels less cluttered.
28:25The cabinets are even lower in front of the window for the bench.
28:29Our kid loves to climb up there to watch us cooking or doing the dishes.
28:35The cabinets incorporate a fridge, a dishwasher and a full-size oven.
28:40On the counter sits an induction hob and above it is an integrated extractor hood.
28:47The backsplash is made of simple white ceramic tiles.
28:51The counter is made of Hi-Max, a material best known under commercial brand Korean, doubled with birch plywood.
29:00One part of the wall is made of stones, which is actually the exterior wall of the building next to
29:06us.
29:07Our custom dining table can be extended to seat up to eight guests.
29:11We also found all the dining chairs on the street and restored them.
29:16One of them is an old bistro chair painted in black and with a contemporary canning of yellow watering hose
29:23that we weaved by hand.
29:26The stairs are finished in birch plywood and have no visible screw heads.
29:32We covered it with five coats of super strong varnish.
29:37A small storage space is concealed below the stairs.
29:45Above the living room is our bedroom.
29:51There is a skylight and a ceiling fan with the feature being the large double glazed window that overlooks the
29:59kitchen.
30:02We have a desk by the window so the room sometimes doubles as our office.
30:09There is a bespoke storage unit with plenty of space for clothes and personal belongings.
30:17We kept the baby room very simple.
30:21We wanted it to be able to grow with our baby.
30:29The bathroom has a concealed and soundproof door as it opens directly to the main space.
30:37It is a cubic volume with a bathtub by the window, an extra large mirror and simple equipment.
30:47The sink was found in the street and put on top of a remodeled dresser we bought for a few
30:53euros.
30:54The toilets, the boiler and the tiles were bought second hand the day before the first Covid-19 lockdown,
31:01as all stores were already closed and the construction had yet to be finished.
31:08Hidden behind the mirror door, we designed a simple laundry room that contains a washing machine,
31:14some storage, the switchboard and the boiler.
31:21What are the things that we need to do in the future?
31:22Vertical extensions to existing buildings are a way to accommodate more people in a given city.
31:28They benefit from existing electrical, water and sewage networks,
31:34as well as having established transportation, schools, hospitals, parks and other services.
31:41When you design small spaces, the criteria of success feels more real,
31:45because you have no option but to make things work.
31:49Beauty and comfort must come out of practical, technical, physical and economical constraints.
32:09I wanted to find an apartment in the centre of Paris with a lot of light and also a spacious
32:17living room.
32:20The apartment is located in the Pigal district, in the Heard of Paris,
32:27not far from the Moulin Rouge and the Sacré-Cœur Church.
32:34I am a big fan of movies and music from the 70s, so I get my influences from there and
32:42also from the building itself,
32:44where you still find some 70s elements like wooden panels or other materials like that.
32:51I am Jean-Mélo Leclerc, founder of JMLC Studio, and I'm living here with my partner Victor.
33:08The building is built on the previous Bal Tabarin site, that was a famous cabaret in Paris.
33:15On the lower floor, there are music stores and a supermarket, and the upper levels are residential.
33:24My idea for this apartment was to use a 70s palette of colour and materials.
33:29I wanted to create a space that is easy to live in a contemporary way.
33:34I also wanted to find a place where, when I come back home, I'm in a hotel-like bedroom and
33:41bathroom.
33:46The apartment was in a miserable condition and hasn't been renovated since the 90s.
33:53Before, there was a bedroom, a bathroom, a spacious entrance and a kitchen that was closed off.
34:01I opened the kitchen on the living room, so that I can have 30 square meters living room.
34:06I also opened the entrance. I resized the bedroom so that I can fit a bathtub in the bathroom.
34:15And created a separation between the bedroom and the living room with a new laundry area.
34:25The entrance is now a small area marked by a wooden ceiling that integrates a concrete beam that was already
34:34here.
34:36And on your left, you've got the yellow area where you could leave your bags and clothes when you enter
34:42the flat.
34:45A few steps from the entrance is the kitchen, dining and living room, as well as the terrace.
34:52There is a storage closet with stainless steel doors at the end of the hall, which contains the laundry.
34:58There is a washing machine, an ironing table in here, as well as some household items.
35:05The sides of the closet as floor-to-ceiling mirrors, which help to extend the space by reflecting the surrounding
35:12area.
35:14At the start of the living area, there is a credenza, which holds our books and our record player.
35:22And on the right is our dining table, which is the baguette table with its slate top from the Borulek
35:28Brothers.
35:30The main living area is a really relaxing space.
35:34We love lounging around here, reading books and hanging out with friends.
35:39There is a green togo sofa surrounded by pieces from our favorite designers.
35:45We actually straightened the wall behind the togo sofa so that the room is more symmetrical and the togo can
35:51sit parallel to the kitchen.
35:54On the wall by the dining table are two stainless steel doors that hide a retractable desk from when we
36:00work from home.
36:02This has been mounted in a new tiled rounded wall, which makes the walls straight.
36:07The tiles are reminiscent of the swimming pool tiles from the 70s.
36:12The vertical retro tiles help to bring more height to the apartment.
36:18We replaced the previous plastic floors with a beige polished concrete in the entrance, kitchen and living area.
36:26Using the same floor in those three areas makes the apartment feel more spacious.
36:32The kitchen is divided in two parts.
36:36The first one is along the wall and the second one is the island in the middle of the room.
