00:00:02In 1996, Sean Fitzpatrick's All Blacks dropped to the turf at Loftus-Fersfeld at the end of a pulsating game,
00:00:09having achieved what no other All Blacks team had done in history, won a test match series in South Africa.
00:00:14Today, 30 years later, the Springboks host the All Blacks in the first series between the two countries
00:00:20since that historic day in Pretoria.
00:00:22Four tests in consecutive weeks here in South Africa and in Baltimore, USA,
00:00:26the series billed as rugby's greatest rivalry is finally upon us after months of eager anticipation.
00:00:33A rivalry that began with a three-match test series in New Zealand in 1921
00:00:37that has produced seven titles between the two nations in ten editions of the Rugby World Cup
00:00:43and that saw its hundredth match played in the unlikely venue of Townsville in Australia
00:00:48during the 2021 Rugby Championship.
00:00:50A rivalry that is reignited today in the stadium where they met for the first time in a Rugby World
00:00:56Cup
00:00:56in 1995.
00:00:58Four action-packed, intriguing weeks lie in store,
00:01:02starting with this, the 111th test match between the Springboks and the All Blacks.
00:01:07And this is how they line up.
00:01:08Josh Lord and Vabian Holland in the second row with Cody Taylor,
00:01:12the most experienced All Black in the team at hooker.
00:01:15So, Artie Sabia captains in cap number 110, his first game on the tour.
00:01:21Ruben Love, his first game in South Africa, having made an appearance off the bench in Wellington last year.
00:01:27Cam Roygaard starts at nine.
00:01:29Jordy Barrett, so much rests on him in the midfield where he lines up alongside Quinn Tupaya.
00:01:34And then at the back, Damian McKenzie, injured in the tour match against the Sharks.
00:01:39A first appearance for Josh Morby against the Springboks.
00:01:43And Will Jordan makes his first appearance on the tour.
00:01:45A late change on the bench.
00:01:47Simon Parker in for Anton Segner, who was forced to withdraw from the team early this morning.
00:01:58Atmosphere building on a beautiful late winter's day in Johannesburg.
00:02:02Oxen chair makes his first appearance since England here at Ellis Park in the nation's championship.
00:02:08Yerven Etzeved, the most capped Springbok, alongside Ruan Norkia in the second row.
00:02:12Peter Steff-Tutoy captains in the absence of Sia Colisi.
00:02:16And Paul De Villiers gets his first opportunity against the All Blacks.
00:02:19Grant Williams and Sasha Feinberg and Gomesulu are the halfback pairing.
00:02:24And a hundred tests for Damian Derlendi alongside Jesse Creel,
00:02:28the most capped centre pairing in Springbok history.
00:02:31And then at the back, Damian Willemster and Cheslin Colby,
00:02:34who both won their 50th test caps against England here in July.
00:02:38And Kirtley Aronson on the left wing.
00:02:41A 6-2 split on the bench, or is it a 5-3?
00:02:44Andre Esterhaisen wears jersey number 20,
00:02:46giving the option of playing in the back row or in the midfield for South Africa.
00:02:51Corvus Reinhardt and Marnie Lubach, the two out-and-out backline replacements.
00:02:56On the bench for the Springboks here this afternoon.
00:03:04And as we look back 30 years to 1996,
00:03:08Sean Fitzpatrick,
00:03:10who became the first captain to lead the All Blacks to a test series win
00:03:16in history.
00:03:18Winning the first test in Durban,
00:03:20the second at Loftus-Fersfeld.
00:03:21They lost the third test with the series already sealed
00:03:24when they came here to Ellis Park for the third test of that series.
00:03:28Gary Teichmann
00:03:31was the Springbok captain for that series.
00:03:34And now the two captains from three decades ago
00:03:37bring rugby's greatest rivalry trophy
00:03:39to the plinth at Ellis Park.
00:03:43The two halves of the trophy drawn together
00:03:48in a strong magnetism,
00:03:50representing the bond between these two countries on the rugby field.
00:03:54And if this series should be shared,
00:03:57they will get half of the trophy each.
00:04:01And as has become tradition here at Ellis Park
00:04:05in test matches between these two nations,
00:04:08the flyover.
00:04:13Nice and low.
00:04:15And banking to make another appearance as well.
00:04:20One in the colours of the All Blacks.
00:04:22One in the colours of the Springboks.
00:04:25But the time for this eagerly awaited series has come.
00:04:31And Adi Sabia joined the tour group ten days ago
00:04:35after remaining back in New Zealand
00:04:37over the first couple of weeks.
00:04:40Prepares to lead his side out for the 17th time
00:04:44on the occasion of his 110th test match for New Zealand.
00:04:50He won his 100th cap against South Africa
00:04:54at Eden Park in Auckland
00:04:56in the first of two test matches
00:04:59between the countries in last year's rugby championship.
00:05:02That game was won by the All Blacks at Eden Park
00:05:06where they retained their extraordinary record
00:05:08winning by 24 points to 17.
00:05:11But then a week later,
00:05:12with a raft of changes
00:05:13in their starting line-up,
00:05:16the Springboks would overturn that result
00:05:18in emphatic style winning by 43 points to 10.
00:05:22But now,
00:05:23Adi Sabia back
00:05:26and in charge
00:05:27of this team.
00:05:29The 32-year-old who's
00:05:30had a bit of a
00:05:32sabbatical, they call it,
00:05:34in the Japanese league,
00:05:35playing in the colours of the Kobe Steelers.
00:05:37And now it is the moment for Damien Derlendi
00:05:42with his wife, Dominica,
00:05:45and their two children
00:05:48to come out onto Ellis Park.
00:05:50He made his debut against Argentina back in 2014
00:05:54and against Australia
00:05:56in the following season.
00:05:58He made his first appearance alongside Jesse Creel
00:06:03in the Springbok midfield.
00:06:05He played in the Rugby World Cup in England that year,
00:06:08playing a vital role after the injury to
00:06:10captain Jean de Villiers.
00:06:15Identified by his schoolboy coach
00:06:17as a significant talent.
00:06:19He went off
00:06:19to the academy run
00:06:21by Alan Zondach
00:06:22in Riebeck Castile,
00:06:24was recommended to John Dobson
00:06:25who was coaching
00:06:26the University of Cape Town's
00:06:28varsity cup side.
00:06:30He took his opportunity there
00:06:32shortly thereafter,
00:06:33played for the Stormers
00:06:35and a year later
00:06:36for the Springboks.
00:06:38An extraordinary journey
00:06:38comes to a head
00:06:40with 100 test caps
00:06:41against New Zealand
00:06:43here in Johannesburg
00:06:45and after
00:06:46the Derlendi family,
00:06:49the Impey Warriors
00:06:52chee-ing up the crowd,
00:06:57queuing the pyrotechnics
00:06:58and that is the queue
00:07:00for Peter Steff-Tutoy.
00:07:03He was captain
00:07:04in all
00:07:05the Springboks matches
00:07:06in the recent Nations Championship
00:07:09often.
00:07:09The withdrawal of Sia Colisi
00:07:11shortly ahead
00:07:12of the first match
00:07:13in that tournament
00:07:14against England
00:07:16here at Ellis Park.
00:07:18And today,
00:07:19captains his country
00:07:20for the sixth time.
00:07:21A two-time
00:07:22World Rugby Player of the Year.
00:07:25Man of the match
00:07:26in the Rugby World Cup Final
00:07:27in 2023 in Paris
00:07:29against this opponent
00:07:31and winning
00:07:32his 99th
00:07:34test cap
00:07:35here in Johannesburg
00:07:37this evening.
00:07:46great drama,
00:07:48great theatre.
00:07:49The stage
00:07:50is finally set
00:07:52for test one
00:07:54of four
00:07:54in the Rugby's
00:07:57greatest rivalry series.

00:08:06sung by

00:08:35the singing of the

00:08:36of the Year.
00:09:00God of Nations at Thy feet.
00:09:07In the bonds of love we meet, hear our voices we entreat, God defend our free land.
00:09:23God the civics triple star, from the shafts of strife and war, maker praises heard afar, God defend New Zealand.
00:09:53He remains standing for the singing of the South African National Anthem, which will be led by Demi Lemua.

00:11:31And united we shall stand
00:11:37Let us live and strive for freedom
00:11:41In South African Ireland
00:11:58Spine chilling moments already
00:12:00The Springboks about to line up to
00:12:05Accept the challenge from the All Blacks face
00:12:08The Haka
00:12:10Cody Taylor captained the touring side
00:12:14Against the Bulls at Loftus Fersfeld
00:12:18In their third tour game a week ago
00:12:21And will lead the Haka here at Ellis Park

00:14:16Oh, my God!
00:14:16Oh, my God!
00:14:17Oh, my God!
00:14:31an incredible moment as cody taylor leads kappa kappa pungle russia rasmus asked the south african
00:14:38fans in the stand to remain quiet for that hacker they did with me in commentary former spring
00:14:47bakuka hanyani shimangi what an electrifying start to this series shimmy yeah good afternoon matthew
00:14:54and the fly over there are back
00:15:01all is special here the hakka all is special this is an elite level matchup
00:15:08the world champions against the oldest enemy the all blacks
00:15:13at the home of rugby here ellis park in south africa
00:15:16full house it's time to get going can't wait for this one to start yeah thank you and we
00:15:23are joined pitch side this afternoon by former springbok captain jean de villiers a springbok
00:15:31centurion himself lapping up the occasion with us this afternoon yeah thank you matt so special
00:15:38down here it is absolutely electric i do not know what it's like in the commentary box down
00:15:44here you can feel the tension you can see the emotion it is unbelievable conditions perfect
00:15:51conditions
00:15:52a word on damien delen is so special for him and his family but every single person on this field
00:15:58now
00:15:58whether you're wearing black or wearing green they are ready for this that is why it is called rugby's
00:16:06greatest rivalry yeah join in the greatest rivalry we've seen from new zealand
00:16:15from new zealand as we're going to get started genuine front kickoffs they look to throw a punch will
00:16:20they run from here sasha feinberg and gomazulu his kickoff goes over the head of the lifted player
00:16:31cam roy guard with his first touch of the tour was not able to play in any of the three
00:16:37tour matches so
00:16:38far due to injury they were sweating on his fitness and he ever needs a bit charging down but caught
00:16:44off
00:16:45side matthew carley the referee from england awarding the penalty just too quickly out of the blocks yeah
00:16:52new zealand trying to go the conventional route generally from this position we've seen them even
00:16:57the previous test in the nation's cup they have a run from kickoff if there is space and opportunity
00:17:03there but even it's too eager on the offside line wanting to put pressure on cam roy guard just over
00:17:09eager there you could just see on the line he left a little bit too early but already they're putting
00:17:14early pressure new zealand line out opportunity
00:17:18and the kick from reuben love setting up the opportunity in the spring box half early take at
00:17:24the line up for josh lord sasha feinberg gomazulu goes low on the all blacks captain tipped on by fabian
00:17:31holland now cody taylor and malcolm marx in over the ball and then one back thank you
00:17:42the all black slightly isolated after making the initial turnover malcolm marx quinton tupiah quickly
00:17:48through the hands for will jordan another making his first appearance on this tour
00:17:55little tip on in midfield and ethan de groot is sent back and it's south africa who get the penalty
00:18:03the physicality on the gain line has set the tone yeah sean you'll be seeing it down there the spring
00:18:08box
00:18:08definitely rushing up trying to cut the oxygen of the new zealanders jasper visa over that one quickly
00:18:14yes so strong on defense waiting for the moment to get into that drug first time around we saw malcolm
00:18:19mark second time around jasper visa and they mean business when it comes to break down defensively
00:18:26they're just not gonna let the all blacks run at them they will make those tackles and once you get
00:18:30that opportunity to have a sniff at breakdown the likes of marx dllende vista the villiers will be on you
00:18:37well a kick at altitude well within the range of sasha feinberg and gomazulu but they go for touch
00:18:44come new zealand new zealand and it's the timing from new zealand please on the assistant visa first
00:18:50to start off defensively the double hit hitting backwards not falling for that tip pass advantage
00:18:55south africa there are some weaknesses in the new zealand more stopping system with electric look to
00:19:01exploited early
00:19:07malcolm marks over the top of his captain peter step to toy
00:19:11feinberg and gomazulu flying into the tackle on cody taylor user
00:19:26and will jordan claiming the high ball but turned over by the springbox williams visa brings a good
00:19:36tackle out of tyrell lomax and another penalty
00:19:42well that's a soft penalty that that's a soft penalty that's even worse in terms of discipline
00:19:47williams looking to play quickly put it down a very soft penalty you know
00:19:54you'll want the same
00:19:57kick a goal the pressure at breakdown already telling for new zealand against south africa the way that they
00:20:05wait for the moment just the correct moment to have a sniff at it cody taylor trying to do the
00:20:10same
00:20:11but unfortunately not getting back that's the stand behind hindmost feet before he re-entered and had
00:20:16a go at that breakdown also playing the nine obviously illegal at breakdown time we always knew
00:20:23that breakdown was part of the rock and you played the nine within a minute this time around well at
00:20:27least
00:20:27four minutes into the game south africa having the upper hand interestingly it is cheslin colby with the
00:20:33kicking duties today thank you well he took the kicking duties against england in the nation's
00:20:37championship match here in johannesburg in round one and did so with distinction now to take the lead
00:20:47five minutes into the 111th test match between the springbox and the all blacks
00:20:58and it's early pressure from the springbox is that you can see the line speed there's a bit of a
00:21:03a bit of an age in terms of line speed that double hits the game will certainly open up later
00:21:08on but
00:21:08new zealand probably want to go direct first and then look for it then look to go wide you got
00:21:13to earn
00:21:13that right the short option especially against line speed you want to go hard in first deep on the restart
00:21:20from ruben love and jasper visa just gliding past the attempted tackle of will jordan who was in pursuit
00:21:33grant williams from the base to paul vai started his last four test matches against south africa in
00:21:40the second row and on the side of the strum at blindside this evening
00:21:46penalty advantage offside fabian holland with the carry but south africa too quickly off the line
00:21:52penalty advantage mckenzie for jordan and then vai
00:21:59still playing
00:22:03this time it's you are nokia making the hit on fabian holland but back for the penalty on halfway
00:22:09be patient yeah that's where he went the new zealand men fabian holland josh lord that's where
00:22:15south africa coming up around the drug area they need to dent there they need to get gain line if
00:22:20they want to expose or they want the outside backs to get a bit of room but fantastic opportunity for
00:22:25new zealand south africa again with line speed the discipline is important stay a little bit further
00:22:30back and then get the jump early okay number three was our player who has identified as offside
00:22:35uh it was just there just that little nudge there it was walk alone timing who initially went forward
00:22:41but didn't retreat and go backwards so another one soft penalty from the spring box new zealand
00:22:46one out on the green one out mow come out thank you no contest on the throat of fabian holland
00:22:53and
00:22:53out the back from luke jacobsen paul de villiers cutting down geordie barrett to paul vai hanging in
00:23:01that five meter tram line high tackle core yes we got the group cutting out a man to find luke
00:23:16jacobsen
00:23:17and the pick and go from ardisabia finds roy guard to his inside slips the tackle of wilco low cover
00:23:24defense
00:23:25gets him jordie barrett long cut up ball and to provide
00:23:39no advantage and back for the penalty do they go to the corner again yeah i think that could be
00:23:46the
00:23:46core but it was direct you just see the danger direct head contact that's just the penalty yeah it was
00:23:51all
00:23:51on advantage but again the curse of penalties in a test match springbox gave away one earlier on
00:23:58both sides another one now all of a sudden you're on your five you never want to double up on
00:24:04penalties
00:24:06yeah and shimmy i think the concern for the box would be the easy way in which they have conceded
00:24:11penalties even as a bit twice now already going offside once and then just a bit of a slip by
00:24:16vibe but
00:24:16conceding that penalty with a head contact taylor this time for josh lord pressure on south africa's
00:24:26more defense taylor in possession trying to shift the direction of this mall yeah i'm coming here
00:24:35roi guard having a little going self well watched by grant williams tupo vai
00:24:46penalty advantage six no way through for the all black captain thank you one penalty advantage again
00:24:57and jordan into the corner a bullet of a pass from cam roy guard
00:25:07skipping the pot of forwards that were available to him and will jordan gets his 52nd test try and a
00:25:15fourth against south africa yeah will jordan does it again he does it again this man knows his way to
00:25:21the
00:25:22trial line first game on this tour but it was cam roy guard look how flat this passes he's hanging
00:25:27out
00:25:27wide and williams i think tried almost trying to go for the intercept it looked like but the pass the
00:25:33ball beating him jordan he takes his shoulders nice and low new zealand open the counter little spark
00:25:38spring box we'll look at those penalties and at the rest at the end of the day that was still
00:25:43on penalty
00:25:43advantage ruben love in just his ninth test appearance he came off the bench against the spring box
00:25:51in wellington last year
00:25:56establishing himself in the number 10 jersey during the nation's championship a miss first up from him
00:26:02just a little bit too far to the right there for ruben love but that guy never makes a mistake
00:26:07when
00:26:07he's so close to the trial line will jordan they're making a hia replacement the name of the game is
00:26:14possession and the all-blacks have had most of that box hia mouth guard hang on let me do
00:26:21the early penalties also he's coming now okay it's the early penalties also from the spring box you
00:26:27want to be clinical in those areas but someone here there's an hia here the players don't know who it
00:26:32is
00:26:32but yeah kirtley aren't stuff start on side kirtley aren't said is uh surely he will be going up on
00:26:39the mouth guard 11's come the sensor window if you need to go or for an hia and the hybrid
00:26:44is on
00:26:47are we nearly there guys yeah we're good to go yeah we just wait for this one just team let
00:26:51everyone know that it's a mouth guard hia yeah okay that's the contact there in the head isn't it
00:26:58it was luke jacobsson i think with a pick and drive a little collision there but also i think it's
00:27:03ethan de grit getting some sort of strapping on his knee yeah there was a lot said and the narrative
00:27:11certainly in the week in terms of slowing down the game but unfortunately these things are part of
00:27:16rugby and when they are injuries we need to slow it down we need to look after the safety of
00:27:21the players
00:27:23in the grid seems like he'll be able to continue playing but kirtley aren't so off for 10 minutes
00:27:30some degrees on that me isn't it we should just see how long he continues almost limping slightly
00:27:36when he's running well all props run like that let's not let's not say let's play every incident
00:27:40individually but yeah i'm going to treat both teams no scrum as yet this was part of the talk during
00:27:46the
00:27:46week as well the all blacks trying to time on as much as they could avoid presenting the springbok team
00:27:54with set piece opportunity 10 minutes in no scrum as yet savia taken down not now south africa 15 stop
00:28:07use it plenty of height on that restart from sasha feinberg and gomezulu giving
00:28:12the kick chase is an opportunity to apply this pressure deep inside new zealand's 22. no it's not
00:28:20clear you need to be better than that okay ruin nokia a little hasty out of the blocks but didn't
00:28:25have
00:28:25an influence so roy guard was allowed to make his clearance off the left foot yeah the long kickoff
00:28:30was for willem sir probably need a little bit more hang time but he made the right decision made the
00:28:35hit
00:28:36but yet to see the scrum you're right matthew but great off attacking opportunity here for the springboks
00:29:07so back for the penalty against josh lord
00:29:13yeah it's it's it's it's the more stopping almost going too early here are you all right new zealand
00:29:18obviously clearly worried about the south african mall so getting ready to stop a ball just a little
00:29:23bit too eager a little bit too early this one's just kickable also
00:29:31ouch shimmy i know you get excited when we talk about scrums and mauling
00:29:36but can we talk about that cheslin colby step once again just showing those magical feet
00:29:43man that boy can move in small spaces he could just beat anyone in the world
00:29:49boom off the left jacobson still don't know which way he went lovely by such a special player
00:29:58as chet shoes with a little bit of room he will hurt you the the magician cheslin colby there's people
00:30:04there's people shouting five six and seven six are you happy new zealand
00:30:13right come on guys let's play fair seven no seven stay stay stay you can stay you can stay no
00:30:25okay this time given the opportunity to bring the ball to ground one stop has been called but the mall
00:30:34gaining some momentum
00:30:36ball is on the ground out the back for peter step to toy
00:30:45backwoods play on wilco low onside consolidating the possession after a loss out of the back visa
00:30:58penalty advantage esterhaisen andre esterhaisen is in
00:31:12a sixth test try for andre the giant the hybrid player plenty of rugby last year on the flank but
00:31:22filling in for kurt lee aronson making his presence felt yeah andre esterhaisen well the hybrid hammer
00:31:28now takes that ball just drop shoulder morby not aggressive enough not engaging him defensively
00:31:36and esterhaisen made it look easy at the end south africa celebrating the spring box are celebrating
00:31:43easy entry on penalty advantage also but esterhaisen power absolute power from the big man
00:32:01andre esterhaisen
00:32:01cheslin colby adds the extras five out of seven conversions against england
00:32:08two out of two for cheslin colby some call him the hybrid some might call him an suv all he
00:32:14is saying
00:32:14is that step back it is electric down here but i am the bulldozer today no one will stop me
00:32:20andre esterhaisen
00:32:21are over for bock try number one
00:32:29scoring that try off penalty advantage as well
00:32:34and sasha feinberg and gormazulu looking to make the clearance under a bit of pressure from
00:32:40will jordan for a deep restart from ruben love
00:32:45not now and quick to spot the opportunity that the all blacks might want to take a quick line up
00:32:50to hold now from feinberg and gormazulu taking play back into new zealand's half
00:33:01in five
00:33:03holland and then out the back for jacobsen savia
00:33:07geordie barrett stopped in his tracks by young paul de villiers just 23 years of age
00:33:13first appearance against the all blacks and just his fourth test
00:33:19hoist from roy gods
00:33:24brilliantly out of the air and then jesse creel
00:33:32oxen chair lines up for a first carry
00:33:37knock on sean you must be excited now time for the first gram
00:33:41i think it was a strip on oxen chair but you can see what new zealand are trying to do
00:33:44have a go first jordy isolate films at the back
00:33:49but philips are the escape artist at the back there's a strip here there we go that's a strip
00:33:55as he was about to go down that's the wrestling match
00:34:01shimmy do you think i mean we're almost 20 or 15 minutes into this game again another another
00:34:06stoppage um treatment to one of the all-black players once again for that stoppage do you think
00:34:12it's oxen chair just saying we've 15 minutes and come on we need to scrum i know i've got the
00:34:16ball but
00:34:17how about i knock it on and let's scrum for the first time in the game yeah we saw it
00:34:21in one of the
00:34:21tests i think stanica also just knocked the ball down deliberately because i think he was missing the
00:34:26scrums good mike but again new zealand sorry so that's going to want to make a statement here please
00:34:32that's you're the second player on your team to mention that you're not the captain i don't need
00:34:36it from everyone okay i know the storyline
00:34:41it's interesting matthew carley the referee early in the game now that two players from your team
00:34:47of the last game being slowed the all-blacks and march them back saying please just trust me to deal
00:34:54with
00:34:54it applies both ways and he's referring to the pace of play and cody taylor killing it now so that
00:35:01he doesn't master for the whole game i know you do preventing the spring box and playing quickly
00:35:05now jesse creel either team has gone in and making a point about stoppages are we good to go here
00:35:11guys
00:35:11yeah just from respectfully turned him away so you're not the captain you're good and i'm aware of the
00:35:18storyline and matching we give credit to the official to matt carley for taking control early on you know
00:35:26setting the standards and just saying i'm i'm the boss here i'll make sure that this is a good contest
00:35:31and that is all we want to see don't we yeah i know good good scrum position here for new
00:35:35zealand
00:35:35a big blind here to come into we've seen how adventurous or how optimistic they've been on attack
00:35:40throughout this tour so they want to generate something here make sure the scoreboard doesn't
00:35:46stay too far away from them on the far side i've got to read to my esteemed colleague on this
00:35:58one
00:35:59okay that's just the early stages you want to maintain your shape especially in their engagement
00:36:04you can see the new zealand team not big on the head must be on the floor quite close okay
00:36:09chase
00:36:10your feet up you just want to maintain your shape and chase your feet up there matt carley's quite on
00:36:13there of course it can make sure the break foot stay if the cadence is slower both sides
00:36:25crouch
00:36:37huge pressure coming in from the springbok eight but hastily out the back here's ruben love
00:36:45hold hold on mr hazen with a tackle detoy missing the attempted steal jordan for degroote
00:36:57advantage jackal with the tackler in the way josh lord another big tackle from visa
00:37:04he can't jackal if you're there
00:37:09the jackal needs to make a better decision
00:37:16matthew carley making the point that the jackal can't go if the tackler has not rolled away
00:37:24and just to go back a couple of seconds back that springbok scrum looked like it was on top of
00:37:29new
00:37:29zealand so worrying signs especially when the scrum count goes up and the springboks get to put the
00:37:34ball in but again a great chance here for new zealand on attack looking to get to some width
00:37:40so tackle made yeah tackle not drilling away it's wilco low there cody taylor got penalized to be fair
00:37:46for the same thing earlier on stop perfect
00:37:53yeah clear change
00:37:59fabian holland and quickly out the back for jacobsen and savia
00:38:03barrett barrett and love over the top for jordan a little bit of space to work with here
00:38:10tackle made by cheslin colby roy guard
00:38:14oh and paul de villiers onside cleaned off it in the nick of time as he went in for the
00:38:21steal
00:38:24lord
00:38:29advantage penalty advantage as malcolm marx
00:38:34well he was showing advantage to new zealand but then two off his feet
00:38:40yes no but you neck roll first i've got it from the tmo and and what's happening there is the
00:38:44big
00:38:44men in new zealand so they're not making good meters on the game line so it's making it easy for
00:38:49the south african poachers to get out there that's why every breakdown from new zealand it's almost a
00:38:53desperation clean or a rescue we saw the tackle on will jordan sesha feinberg and gomazulu got cleaned
00:38:58out paul de villo's also close and this time a neck roll because defensive breakdown or attacking
00:39:03breakdown the springboks are putting new zealand under pressure look at that malcolm marxon there
00:39:08in the that neck rolls not there he managed to steal the ball he's still on the ball coming guys
00:39:12but
00:39:13it's just desperation keys and the good hits from south africa are hitting new zealand on the gain
00:39:17line so they're not making meters which makes the make the cleans a lot easier no stay there all black
00:39:22stay there thank you
00:39:29everyone up here forced to tap to the villiers as we saw in the nation's championship
00:39:34can you use it strongly don't lie on them
00:39:42out if you're in the 10. williams under pressure from holland
00:39:47his place not going as far as he would have liked now holland out the back to pyre tipping it
00:39:52on for
00:39:53mckenzie strong counter from damien der lindy now josh morby just his third test match first against
00:40:01south africa picked on that wing flat also a fullback looking to handle those hoisted kicks beautiful
00:40:08hands from jordan taylor and tupo vai
00:40:18the ball's available williams going low unable to roll away but the ball available then
00:40:23bullet of a pass from ruben love jacobsson and morby
00:40:31picking their battles at the breakdown time the springbox
00:40:36opting not to go you know the ball use that
00:40:42fanning out this defensive line and almost forcing the kick now from roy god after several phases
00:40:51more aerial brilliance from damien villamson
00:40:54outside thank you feinberg and domicile weight six and andre esterhazy off the left boot
00:41:06mckenzie did well in love and barrett
00:41:15and we're happy to call for the mark take his time with the clearance
00:41:27how good is damien williams have been in the air we always knew that that would be a massive challenge
00:41:32but he has been dominating it india is so safe under that ball
00:41:43damien villamson king of the skies right there confident dominant
00:41:49it's also that space so brilliantly mostly manages to escape out of contact the whole time
00:41:55we see the plan quickly jacobsson emerging from the mall to feed geordie barrett
00:42:05fabian holland has been a prominent carrier in the test match so far barrett over the top for vay
00:42:12who spent a lot of time in those tram lines and morby josh morby will go in
00:42:18some brilliant handling skill and interplay between forwards and backs
00:42:25the springbok defense has been breached and again good skills you look at barrett
00:42:31to provide as an edge forward but it's the soft skills from to provide down the edge to find morby
00:42:39fights in contact get that offload and his timing was good one of the fans of super right we've got
00:42:44to
00:42:44provide that ability there those are the soft touches you want as an edge forward i think they might
00:42:51look at this again but it's a soft skills here in space just like a backline player commits the defenders
00:42:56and movie goes thank you mike yeah same as what we saw live
00:43:15we've been live with cheslin colby chasing him down gets his first points against the springboks and
00:43:24it takes his team into the lead new zealand takes the lead a lovely pass to to provide jesse creel
00:43:30just a
00:43:31little bit obviously functioning on the wing now just a little bit late to close down there on tupo
00:43:35vai and then a lovely offload from vai to morby to score the tribe so dangerous on the attack the
00:43:43new
00:43:44zealanders thank you a first test try for josh morby in his third test match lost forward by willemsa who
00:43:54had
00:43:54got up to contest the restart i called it live that was my view not gonna be busy since he
00:44:03got on
00:44:03but that was the kick that they wanted that hanging one down the middle trying and willemsa's the target
00:44:09to try get there but new zealand survived this one minute perfect kick the aerial contest
00:44:15you almost get the feeling you try to catch it on the full maybe tap it back with a lot
00:44:19of south
00:44:19african players behind there but new zealand will want a better hit especially at scrum time the big
00:44:25thing to look at here is the hit that's where springbox that last scrum or the first scrum managed to
00:44:31get
00:44:31an advantage new zealand were already on the back foot good setup patience for the ball okay
00:44:40crouch
00:44:43bind
00:44:46set
00:44:54penalty to the springbox as we get the news
00:44:59that kirtley orenser has failed his head injury assessment and will play no further further part
00:45:09in the game so andre esterhaisen on anywhere backwards not left or right though offering
00:45:16versatility off the bench and it is as a backline player that he will remain that's the penalty
00:45:22you are pretty pretty easy for matt college to make that decision the grit on the head didn't get his
00:45:27bind so drop that went straight down to on his knee it's just the power of the south african hit
00:45:37now you said 10.
00:45:45almost 27 minutes in your view or his two scrums in the game the first one of you or his
00:45:51view being hastily taken out the back by new zealand this one resulting in a penalty
00:45:56springbox still to get the opportunity to feed a scrum but cheslin colby
00:46:04with three out of three from the kicking tee puts the springbox back ahead by one
00:46:09i haven't seen it i trust my team though no no we're not it's not a discussion
00:46:21it's not a discussion i'll come over next round if i can
00:46:28we've been left deep onto jasper visa is out just stepped out just stepped out no no no
00:46:36he saw daylight there he saw glory so his big feet of us just stepped out onto the line but
00:46:41the power
00:46:42of just for this welcome you always wonder jdp why kick on the on this one of the springbox strongest
00:46:48ball carriers yeah when it comes to ball carrying ability there we just see him stepping stepping
00:46:53out when it comes to ball carrying abilities he's certainly right at the top so switch but a
00:46:59risky for new zealand to do that but they've got reward this time around
00:47:04first line up ball thrown to tupo vai quickly down for jacobsen again and into the midfield for sabia
00:47:14roy god goes short side for vay and jordan
00:47:20one manhandled into touch as opposed to tackle by even it's a bit yeah what they wanted new zealand
00:47:26wanted a bigger blind side there so to provide as he sucks in the last defender then he does a
00:47:31loop
00:47:31around to will jordan there's just there just wasn't my space and to provide was probably a little bit
00:47:37well a little bit too far towards the touch line so you just want to suck in the defender create
00:47:42a bit of
00:47:43space on the outside for jordan and then he's gone the space
00:47:52down by even it's a bit not on the terms that he would have liked and paul de villiers already
00:47:56the
00:47:56games top tackler now carries with aplomb and brings a high tackle some disciplinary issues
00:48:07in the first half and i've been soft penalties conceded by the all blacks
00:48:13knees down yeah discipline so important for both these teams but another fantastic carry from paul
00:48:20de villiers the young man already 11 tackles made in this game 28 minutes into it and this time around
00:48:26showing his ability with ball in hand going nice and low the new zealand tacklers not getting that bend
00:48:33at the hip to make the tackle we see the contact on head but then also after the tackle has
00:48:38been called
00:48:39jacobson continuing with it and ripping the ball which constitutes a penalty
00:48:44marks and it's a bit down for williams
00:48:47feinberg and gomezulu look to his inside then found de villiers to his right
00:48:54williams goes to the air chased by colby oh okay it's fine play and will jordan
00:49:02play on play on claiming the mark but he's kicked charge down turnover ball for the springbox it's a bit
00:49:09it's a bit more power is having to Messiaan
00:49:20Grant Williams having to dive on the loose ball.
00:49:26Ruan Nokia.
00:49:29Oxum Che.
00:49:30Say again.
00:49:31Second carry for him in the game.
00:49:33Use it.
00:49:34Williams back on his feet to take charge at the base of the ruck.
00:49:38De Lendi.
00:49:39The Centurion.
00:49:42The Springboks 10th.
00:49:45De Toy.
00:49:47Awkward one for Damien Willemser.
00:49:49Perhaps thought about a drop goal for a second there.
00:49:52That's what it looked like.
00:49:54Sets up the ruck for Williams.
00:49:56And then Malcolm Marks.
00:49:59Quintupaya.
00:50:00Feeling his wrath.
00:50:04And then Jasper Wieser.
00:50:07Accidental collision with his teammate.
00:50:10Damien Willemser would have felt that one as well.
00:50:12And it will be a scrum.
00:50:14I wonder if that goes into his tackle count.
00:50:15He wasn't in the way.
00:50:17With some friendly fire there.
00:50:18He just said we'll play as well.
00:50:19So that goes not.
00:50:20The Springboks are short of willing runners and willing carriers.
00:50:25To fire just sat down there.
00:50:27Willemser was trying to get out the way.
00:50:29Just didn't realize Visa.
00:50:30The truck.
00:50:31Yeah.
00:50:31Was behind him.
00:50:33Let's play.
00:50:35Someone having treatment.
00:50:36Yeah.
00:50:37And the gap probably just about a meter left of that.
00:50:41Tyler Lomax.
00:50:42I think it was the next defender.
00:50:44All but late on closing that gap.
00:50:47Visa with too much of an acute angle.
00:50:50Making contact with Damien Willemser.
00:50:52So we'll see our third scrum of the game.
00:50:57Just hold a second if you want.
00:50:58You've got time.
00:50:59Damien Willemser did Cam Roy go out of favor there.
00:51:03Yeah.
00:51:04There's trouble coming as well.
00:51:05But New Zealand want to settle.
00:51:06The stabilizer scrum.
00:51:08Just get parity.
00:51:09As you can see the Springboks on the hits.
00:51:12That's where the intensity is coming.
00:51:16Huge effort.
00:51:18All Blacks scrum dismantled.
00:51:24And the statement was made early from the Springboks.
00:51:27Oxen chair rolling his sleeves up.
00:51:29Getting to work.
00:51:31And again.
00:51:32Warring signs for the All Blacks.
00:51:33We saw this in New Zealand.
00:51:38The scrum starting to bleed.
00:51:39And it's too early for the scrum to bleed.
00:51:41Because the scrum count will go up.
00:51:43Oxen chair.
00:51:44Just the timing from the Springboks.
00:51:46Good timing.
00:51:47And New Zealand not getting the clean hook that they wanted.
00:51:49And you remember the Springboks have not had a scrum foot in yet.
00:51:59Turn around.
00:52:00You're in the gap.
00:52:08Best line-up position so far in the game for the Springboks.
00:52:12They've drawn another penalty advantage.
00:52:15Williams.
00:52:16What can he make of the free play?
00:52:18Wilco Lowe around the corner.
00:52:23They'll want more than the penalty here.
00:52:25Yes, Pavisa.
00:52:30Oh, Esther Hazen's ball out the back.
00:52:33But Sasha Feinberg and Gwonozulu regaining the momentum.
00:52:38Tick and go from Malcolm Marks.
00:52:44Williams.
00:52:46Williams and Visa Wilhelmser.
00:52:49Passes forward.
00:52:51Yeah.
00:52:52There's problems here.
00:52:54No advantage.
00:52:55Early on the lifters.
00:52:57The dogs are barking, Matthew.
00:52:59Visa making meters.
00:53:00Malcolm Marks making meters.
00:53:02Jesus death making meters.
00:53:04The scrum dominating.
00:53:07Not now.
00:53:08And once the Springbok team feels a weakness here.
00:53:10The feel they've got New Zealand on the ropes here.
00:53:13Head injury.
00:53:14And you see that ball rushing forward.
00:53:15Storm is like exactly what the storm has done to New Zealand.
00:53:18The pressure's on here.
00:53:19The heat's on.
00:53:25Timing.
00:53:26And then hitting the lifter before the jumper is down.
00:53:29They're putting their third goal.
00:53:30Yeah, okay.
00:53:31If we see that clearly.
00:53:33He's hitting the lifter.
00:53:35So, Carly is just explaining to Ardy Sevilla what he is seeing.
00:53:38If I see that as a clear picture.
00:53:40The talk all week was about physicality.
00:53:42The timing is correct.
00:53:43Physicality we have certainly seen.
00:53:45But it's gone to ferocity.
00:53:47The ferociousness.
00:53:49Of the contact.
00:53:50The carries from South Africa.
00:53:52Yes, New Zealand is still standing up to it.
00:53:54Nothing, nothing for me.
00:53:55But you're just feeling that slowly but surely.
00:53:57They're tapping away at that wall.
00:53:59Water off.
00:54:00And this next wall.
00:54:01This next mall that we will probably see.
00:54:03Will be a defining moment.
00:54:06TMO's already told me.
00:54:10This is the pressure.
00:54:12When you look at the physical aspects.
00:54:14The scrum was always going to be a worry.
00:54:15He's having a good game.
00:54:17Busy.
00:54:17But the post-contact meters are the big thing here.
00:54:20You can make 200 carries and I make no post-contact meters.
00:54:23What did you do in that contact area?
00:54:26That's where the fight is.
00:54:27That's where the trade warfare is.
00:54:28And that's where Jasper Vista comes alive.
00:54:30Similar numbers.
00:54:31He's got a big punch.
00:54:32And he delivers it on a regular.
00:54:44They will go again.
00:54:46This time to Ruan Nokia in the middle of that line-up.
00:54:53One stop call.
00:54:55But Malcolm Mark surging forwards.
00:55:01Has he lost it?
00:55:03Tomas.
00:55:13We'll just double-check with an on-field decision of no try.
00:55:16Mike.
00:55:18The on-field decision is no try.
00:55:21We'd just like to double-check.
00:55:22I believe he knocked the ball forward.
00:55:25On-field decision, no try.
00:55:28Checking for the grounding.
00:55:32Mike Adibson of Scotland is the TMO.
00:55:36Malcolm Marks is the second-most tries
00:55:39against the All Blacks in Springbok history with six.
00:55:42Taking himself to the ground.
00:55:44He's definitely lost control there
00:55:47and prior to the line as well.
00:55:55Okay, Matt, I have a decision.
00:55:57Okay, go ahead.
00:55:57Okay, it's clear knock-on before the trial end.
00:56:00No try.
00:56:02Scrum five.
00:56:04All Blacks ball.
00:56:04Okay.
00:56:05No try.
00:56:06Knock on.
00:56:08Scrum New Zealand.
00:56:10We'll take a bow, Jordy Barrett.
00:56:12You broke away from me.
00:56:13The All Black forwards not able to stop that Moll from the Springboks.
00:56:17Very nicely set.
00:56:19We see Ruan Rokia reaching out for that.
00:56:21The Moll immediately with that punch right through the middle.
00:56:25Oxencheck joining in and they got that momentum going.
00:56:28Malcolm Marks with like a free road to the line.
00:56:32But Jordy Barrett said, no, not on my watch.
00:56:35He dismantled the ball.
00:56:37And this time around, they need to defend their line with a scrum.
00:56:41The pressure and the heat's coming here from the Springboks.
00:56:44Just look at the timing of when Cam Roigard puts the ball in.
00:56:48And that's when the pressure comes.
00:56:49And also no kicker back, Shamit.
00:56:51Here towards the dead ball line.
00:56:53It's going to be a pickup at the back.
00:56:56From Adi Saviara.
00:56:58It had to be Tupaya.
00:57:01No, no, no.
00:57:02Being asked to set the target.
00:57:04Now, Roigard has the space and time to make his clearance.
00:57:08Well dealt with in the end, but still a scrum under enormous pressure.
00:57:13Yeah, survival.
00:57:15Survival from the New Zealand pack.
00:57:16Cam Roigard did extremely well.
00:57:18And I ran that backwards arc just to buy himself some time.
00:57:21It's a good result for New Zealand.
00:57:23But the worrying sign is the scrum.
00:57:25This is their strongest front row.
00:57:28And we've got another three games after this.
00:57:30Very worrying.
00:57:32She's loving the scrums.
00:57:35The mall that South Africa looked firmly in control of.
00:57:41Denied at the try line.
00:57:43So they must go again.
00:57:45Through Feinberg and Gomazulu.
00:57:46Then the hoist from Grant Williams.
00:57:50Brilliant in the air from Cheslin Colby.
00:57:54A kick regained.
00:57:56And momentum for South Africa.
00:57:58Cross kick now from Feinberg and Gomazulu.
00:58:02And Jesse Creel out on the wing.
00:58:05Just not able to keep it in the field of play.
00:58:11Out on the full.
00:58:15Yeah, Matt.
00:58:17It's gone out on the full.
00:58:18So they come back to in line from where Feinberg and Gomazulu made the kick.
00:58:23It's survival time for New Zealand.
00:58:26They lost the aerial battle.
00:58:28But South Africa camping in that half.
00:58:32New Zealand will want to produce some magic here.
00:58:34To release the pressure.
00:58:38Line out against the throw.
00:58:39Irvin Etzebeth winning it for the Springboks.
00:58:42Dutoy.
00:58:45Dutoy.
00:58:48Williams.
00:58:49And Feinberg and Gomazulu.
00:58:51Burst of acceleration.
00:58:52Then the ball out the back for Darlendi.
00:59:00And Feinberg and Gomazulu must go back to collect scraps once again.
00:59:04And Feinberg and Gomazulu.
00:59:34It's going to be an All Black scrum.
00:59:35Two players down.
00:59:38Two players down with head injuries.
00:59:39It'll be an All Black scrum.
00:59:45They're concerned for the All Blacks.
00:59:47We see Josh Lord and Ethan DeGood both down.
00:59:51Probably head contact between the two of them in a collision.
00:59:56And well handled by Matt Carley.
00:59:59Got the call from his TMO just saying two players in danger.
01:00:03Slow the game down.
01:00:03Make sure we look after the safety of those two.
01:00:07I'm just giving the turnover straight here.
01:00:09So I'm trying to be as even-handed as I can.
01:00:11Hang on.
01:00:11They're going on.
01:00:12George Bauer.
01:00:13So it'll be two replacements.
01:00:14So we'll just wait our time.
01:00:17We'll come on for Ethan DeGrin.
01:00:19We're not sure as yet if that will be an HIA.
01:00:24But Simon Parker in Jersey number 20 will come on for Josh Lord.
01:00:32Maybe that Tupul Vai goes into the second row.
01:00:37Simon Parker a late addition.
01:00:39Are you going to be the match 23?
01:00:42Organised yet?
01:00:43Oh yeah.
01:00:43Yeah, that's it.
01:00:45Hey, it's the collision there.
01:00:48You see that so many times.
01:00:50Both swinging around.
01:00:52In the tackle.
01:00:55It's been physical out there.
01:00:57Jasper Viso spoke about his first contact meters.
01:01:00That's another example of a good carry from Visa.
01:01:04George Bauer on at loose head for his fourth appearance against the Springboks.
01:01:10He said he said inside the Gold Coast.
01:01:13Lulu said, yeah, we'll give him a chance.
01:01:15In the 2021 Rugby Championship.
01:01:18Got a start at Mbumbela in 2022 and then off the bench in the All Blacks victory here at Ellis
01:01:27Park in the match a week later in the 2022 season.
01:01:34And on to face up to Wilco Lowe with the All Blacks feeding a scrum.
01:01:41Behind.
01:01:43Set.
01:01:48Roy Gaut.
01:01:51Inside, inside.
01:01:52And Ruben Love just inside his 22-meter area.
01:01:56It's a brilliant kick.
01:01:58Still alive.
01:02:01I thought they might look to have a run there, but again, Ruben Love made the right decision.
01:02:07Great kick, great pressure release, and the Springboks wouldn't have wanted to get more return from those 22-meter entries.
01:02:16Desperately close in this opening test match of the series with under two minutes to play.
01:02:21A reminder that the last time they met in Wellington last year, the All Blacks led by three points at
01:02:30halftime.
01:02:33Eventually conceding a record defeat.
01:02:39But also, for all the dominance that the Springboks have displayed at scrum time in this test match, much of
01:02:46the pressure has been absorbed.
01:02:47Just one point in it.
01:02:49And much of the talk during the week would, was that if the All Blacks could feel in contention with
01:02:56half an hour to play,
01:02:57they would get to leave in this test match.
01:03:01Ruben Love under pressure and taken over the touchline.
01:03:06Slowly, slowly, slowly, slowly, slowly, backed by New Zealand.
01:03:10Cheslin Colby, the hitman.
01:03:13You saw that, he can't step a step.
01:03:15Cheslin Colby didn't fall for it.
01:03:18Again, it was that tap down from the aerial contest, Sean, for New Zealand under pressure.
01:03:23Yeah, but he can do anything.
01:03:24Cheslin Colby kicks at goal.
01:03:26He steps anyone, but he's worked great off the ball.
01:03:28There again, making that chase, making sure that he makes the tackle to put pressure on the opposition
01:03:33and give South Africa a great attacking opportunity with one minute left in this half.
01:03:38Andre Pollard, the most points for South Africa against New Zealand in the history of this rivalry.
01:03:44Visa gets out of the back.
01:03:45No more form, but the ball is stripped from him.
01:03:49A couple of opportunities, going and begging at the back end of this first half in New Zealand's 22 metre
01:03:55area.
01:03:57And Jordan, running it out of trouble.
01:04:01No, no, no.
01:04:01And doing so brilliantly.
01:04:03We just need to manage possession here for a few seconds.
01:04:07No!
01:04:09We go out to another pot of forwards, Fabian Holland.
01:04:13Time's up.
01:04:15Time's up.
01:04:17Please wait.
01:04:19And with the hooter sounding in the background, Ruben Love can find the safety of touch.
01:04:26One point in it at the break.
01:04:28Dominant amongst the forwards, but the All Blacks with two tries to Will Jordan and Josh Morby.
01:04:36One of them converted by Ruben Love for South Africa.
01:04:40Two penalties from Cheslin Colby.
01:04:42A try by Andre Esthaisen, converted by Cheslin Colby.
01:04:47Half time at Ellis Park.
01:04:48It's the Springboks 13, the All Blacks 12.
01:05:06One point in it.
01:05:11The Springboks leading by just a point against the All Blacks with two tries, who have two tries in the
01:05:16bag already.
01:05:17all the dominance for the Springboks in the latter part of that first half, but just not
01:05:21turning it into points. We're going to go downstairs to our tactical team, that being
01:05:25Rayton Pulsa and Carlo Del Fava, as they take us through one thing that has gone well for South
01:05:30Africa, the scrums. Thank you much. Yeah, it's been a physical battle. It is fast. The intensity
01:05:37is of the highest quality.
