02:12Today, I came to Pune, not to give you a lecture, not to tell you what I think, not
02:29to talk politics to you, but more to allow you to express yourself, to say what you feel,
02:44to say what you think, and what I have done is I have put a little framework, some ideas
02:53to allow you to think, express yourself, and we'll discuss some of these ideas with
03:02young ladies from the crowd this evening. So, I'd like to first of all start by welcoming
03:09everybody, sabka मैं यहां स्वागत करता हूँ, और पहली बार शायद मुझे बोईस कम दिख रहे हैं, या दिखी नहीं
03:19रहे हैं, और लड़कियां दिख रहे हैं।
03:28The idea behind this evening is, as is written over there, break the cage.
03:43I'd first like to remind you of one thing. Can I do that? Now, all of you in your lives
03:54must have been told many things,
04:01nice things, bad things, many of you must have felt scared, you feel scared sometimes on the street, you do,
04:10but I want you to
04:12remember one thing, if there is one thing that you remember from this evening, it is this, that every single
04:23one of you, every single one of you,
04:28is unique in this universe. If I was to look, if I was to look for any one of you,
04:37I will not be able to find
04:40a replica of that person. You are unique, you are special, you are individual and you have your own dream,
04:50your own vision for your life.
04:55I am right. Many times, people ask me, what is India's biggest strength?
05:07And you get many answers when you ask this question. Somebody will say our economy, somebody will say our military,
05:16somebody will say
05:17our medical system. Somebody might even say our people. But I am very clear on what is India's biggest strength,
05:31our biggest asset.
05:32And that strength is 70 crore unique journeys, unique imaginations, unique dreams that the women of India are living.
05:47Somebody might say to me, well, there are 70 crore men. How do you say that 70 crore women
05:58are more important? What is your logic? My logic is the following.
06:04Women are by nature more sensitive, more gentle, more compassionate, and more forward-looking than men.
06:19And that is why I believe fundamentally that India's women, young, old, are India's biggest asset.
06:31Now, a problem hai, a very big problem hai. Problem kya hai? Problem hai ki whenever I speak to a
06:44man,
06:45whenever I speak to a man, women are put in three boxes.
06:55You are either seen as a daughter, as a wife, or as a mother. Now, there is nothing wrong with
07:06being seen as a wife, daughter, or mother.
07:10Nothing wrong with it. But this cannot be your only identity.
07:15It cannot be that we have brilliant women who are doing completely fascinating and different things,
07:29who are professionals, who are sports women, who do multiple different things,
07:35and then the only identity that they are given by our men is these three.
07:43And notice that every single one of those identities has a relationship with a man.
07:51So, you are either a mother or a wife or a daughter.
07:56And I'd like to quote over here, the Manusmriti, which says, clearly,
08:06in childhood, a female must be subject to her father.
08:13Meaning, the Manusmriti says, in childhood, a female belongs to her father.
08:21In youth, she belongs to her husband.
08:26When her Lord is dead, she belongs to her sons.
08:32A woman must never be independent.
08:36This is a direct quote from the Manusmriti.
08:40And this, these words,
08:45are a shame.
08:47Because these words,
08:48should never, ever, have been spoken.
08:52The most,
08:54hello, how are you?
08:57Hello.
08:58The,
08:59the,
09:02the biggest strength of this country,
09:05is,
09:05the fact that our women,
09:08should be independent,
09:10should stand for themselves,
09:11should believe in themselves.
09:13You belong to nobody.
09:15You do not belong to anybody,
09:17except yourself.
09:21You have a relationship with your father.
09:24You have a relationship with your brother.
09:27You have a relationship with your husband.
09:30You have a relationship with your son.
09:32But you do not belong to them.
09:35You belong to yourself.
09:38And I'd like to listen to you.
09:40Hello, sir.
09:47I am advocate Ramah Prasad Zavre.
09:50I have recently graduated.
09:53I'm a lawyer.
09:53and I will be pursuing masters after this.
09:58I have noticed in the last five years that I spent taking my degree,
10:04that women in my field are subjected to such stereotypes that my classmate would not be.
10:12They are given opportunities,
10:14they are given opportunities, networking opportunities, and even cases being handed to them,
10:20only because they are men, and we don't, they don't have a family.
10:24It doesn't matter if they stay home at or not.
10:26Also, I have heard from my senior that it is a waste spending money on my LLM,
10:34only because after a few years, I won't be practicing,
10:38and I will be raising a family.
10:40and it just, it's really sad to see that my degree is just diminished to a point in my bio
10:50data.
10:50So, how, when this happens, when you're in an exam at work,
10:59and you're being told that you're a second-class citizen,
11:03that your degree does not matter, a man's degree matters,
11:07your degree does not matter,
11:09how does it make you feel inside?
11:11What do you want to say to India,
11:15to your friends here,
11:17about how you feel?
11:18Because I'm sure,
11:19a lot of them also feel the same way.
11:22Definitely.
11:23I want my colleagues,
11:25my teachers,
11:27my friends to have confidence in me,
11:30that I won't need to prove that I have received,
11:34I have that degree,
11:35I studied for it,
11:37I put my energy, efforts into it,
11:39and I will be successful.
11:41I don't think I need to prove it to a man,
11:46because...
11:48This is,
11:49this is,
11:50I like this.
11:51She's saying,
11:53that,
11:55why
11:56do I need to prove it to a man?
12:00Why does a woman,
12:0324-7,
12:05have to prove to a man,
12:07that she is good enough?
12:10Fundamental question.
12:12Would you like to say something about that?
12:14Hello,
12:15my name is Jnani Shwari,
12:16I'm from Pune,
12:17Maharashtra itself.
12:18I completed my master's in culture,
12:20media and governance,
12:21from Jamia University,
12:22Delhi.
12:23and I lost my father before three years,
12:26and after that,
12:28he got a cancer.
12:30After that,
12:31there was so much family pressure,
12:33society pressure,
12:34community pressure,
12:35my dad was a sanitary worker,
12:37and I had a huge pressure,
12:39you have to do the relinquishment certificate,
12:42you have to submit the certificate,
12:44you will not,
12:45but if I'm asking anything,
12:46in a property,
12:47or in anything,
12:48it's,
12:49it's,
12:50it's,
12:51it's like,
12:51I'm asking for,
12:55I'm asking for,
12:57like,
12:58it's not my right,
13:00it's,
13:00I'm asking for the,
13:07as a woman,
13:08I'm asking for a hissa,
13:09or as a,
13:11like,
13:11if,
13:11is any other man,
13:13if my,
13:13my,
13:14I have my brother,
13:15and he,
13:15it's his right,
13:16but if I'm asking,
13:17it's,
13:17I'm asking for a hissa,
13:18I'm asking for a hissa,
13:19if your brother is asking,
13:20it's his right,
13:22and if you're asking,
13:23I'm a hissa,
13:24I'm a hissa,
13:25I'm a hissa,
13:25I'm a hissa,
13:26I'm a hissa,
13:26okay.
13:27Again,
13:28now,
13:28I'm come back from Delhi,
13:30and I,
13:30like,
13:31there is a huge,
13:31pressure for a marriage,
13:32and guy want a girl,
13:34who is look fair,
13:35educated,
13:36healthy,
13:38but,
13:38he doesn't want,
13:40the girl like me,
13:41he wants to pursue his,
13:42her career.
13:43But you're a very beautiful girl,
13:44what do you mean,
13:44he doesn't want a girl like you?
13:46Thank you.
13:47But,
13:47they want a girl like me,
13:49but they don't want,
13:50like a girl,
13:51who is pursue,
13:52he,
13:52who wants to pursue her career,
13:54in journalism,
13:55in PR,
13:56or any,
13:57social,
13:58where you connect with the people,
13:59or it has a social job,
14:01they don't want,
14:02like,
14:02girl like me,
14:03they want nine to five girl,
14:04who is doing office work,
14:06she will come back at five,
14:07she will serve you,
14:08she will cook for you,
14:10she will serve you food,
14:12and everything.
14:13The girl like me,
14:14who wants to,
14:15go into the journalism field,
14:17who wants to go under,
14:18but why,
14:20why would a man,
14:21not be proud of,
14:24a wife,
14:25who goes out,
14:26works,
14:27is independent,
14:29is living her own,
14:30vision,
14:31her own dream,
14:32why is it that,
14:33the man is uncomfortable,
14:35with this idea?
14:35Then,
14:35I think,
14:36the man or his family,
14:38would not be able,
14:39to control on her.
14:41But,
14:41why is this control,
14:42so important for a man?
14:43Because,
14:44always women,
14:45treated as a secondary,
14:48sex or human,
14:49they not treated as a equal,
14:51or they not treated as a equal,
14:52human being,
14:53or equal citizen of this country,
14:55I feel.
14:55Do you think,
14:56men feel,
14:57they are superior to women?
14:59Yeah,
15:00definitely,
15:01yes.
15:01They do?
15:02Yes,
15:02they do.
15:03So,
15:04it's a mindset problem?
15:05Yeah,
15:05it's a mindset problem,
15:06it's a patriarchal problem,
15:08the way it's,
15:09And,
15:10and you come into contact,
15:12every day of your life,
15:13with this patriarchy.
15:14Yes.
15:15The roads are,
15:17controlled by the patriarchy.
15:19Yes.
15:20Right?
15:21Yeah.
15:21The businesses are controlled,
15:23by the patriarchy.
15:25The school education system,
15:26is controlled by the patriarchy.
15:28There is a caste hierarchy.
15:30Yeah.
15:31So,
15:31how do you feel about this?
15:33Like,
15:34I just wanted to treat,
15:35my education,
15:37or,
15:37I wanted to,
15:38look at my education,
15:40is,
15:40it's a dignified thing.
15:42I wanted to treat myself,
15:44as a human being,
15:45not any secondary,
15:47person,
15:48or the citizen of this country.
15:50Do you get angry?
15:51Every day,
15:52every night.
15:53What is going on?
15:54How is this happening?
15:55Yes,
15:56every day I got angry.
15:57Every night,
15:57I started thinking about this,
15:59how it's,
16:00it's,
16:00like this,
16:01I'm educated,
16:02I pursue,
16:03I completed my masters,
16:04in Jamia,
16:05still,
16:06I'm facing this.
16:07I'm an educated one,
16:09still,
16:10I have to face this,
16:11every day,
16:12every night,
16:13in every table conversation,
16:15it's,
16:16it's,
16:16every time,
16:17it's like,
16:18oh,
16:18you are the girl,
16:19you will get,
16:19you are a girl,
16:21you will get everything.
16:22It's not about,
16:23okay,
16:23you are educated,
16:24you have your own dreams,
16:26you have your own ideology,
16:27you can think,
16:28you have your own thoughts,
16:29it's not never like this.
16:31It's always like,
16:32you are a girl,
16:33you are good looking,
16:34so any man will get married to you,
16:37and you will have a good life.
16:39Right.
16:39Well,
16:40thank you.
16:41Yes.
16:42Thank you,
16:42nice to meet you.
16:43Thank you,
16:43sir.
16:44Yes,
16:44thank you,
16:44sir.
16:45So,
16:47we came up with a word,
16:49came up with an interesting word,
16:51control.
16:51Do you feel,
16:53that society tries to control you,
16:55men try to control you?
16:56Yes.
16:58In everything that you do?
16:59Yes.
17:01So,
17:07here
17:08is a trap.
17:11And
17:11there are
17:15four
17:16methods of control.
17:18And I want to understand from you,
17:20have I got this right,
17:22or have I got this wrong?
17:24The first method of control,
17:26violence.
17:28Second method of control,
17:31disrespect,
17:34time is used against you,
17:36and in every single sphere of life,
17:39in some way or the other,
17:42men and the system is trying to control you,
17:45make sure that you do exactly what it wants.
17:48Agreed?
17:51And,
17:52very interestingly,
17:55this
17:55oppression
17:58is disguised
18:00as concern.
18:01We are very concerned about you,
18:04that is why
18:05we need to
18:06control you.
18:08Yes?
18:09Okay.
18:13So,
18:14let's discuss a little bit
18:16about
18:17violence.
18:23Let's discuss a little bit
18:25about violence.
18:26lines.
18:27This line is
18:29something
18:29happened.
18:31It's
18:31something
18:32you say it to yourself.
18:35If you go out,
18:37it's something happened.
18:40the family members tell you.
