00:00Hello everyone, my name is William Chambers. Hello YouTube family. Hello all those who watch me on social media.
00:06Today I would like to just get in the word and talk about a very important topic with us today.
00:12Today I want to talk about the danger of expecting too much from people.
00:21Ah, there is a danger. Ah, you will get your feelings hurt.
00:26Ah, you will feel betrayed sometimes if you expect too much from people.
00:33God is who we are supposed to expect from.
00:36Anyway, one of the greatest sources of pain that we experience is not necessarily rejection,
00:43but it's misplaced expectation.
00:46Placing our expectations on people and upon things to bring us a certain type of outcome.
00:54When we expect people to give to us what God never assigned for people to give to us,
01:00we are going to feel disappointment.
01:03It is absolutely inevitable.
01:06There's a danger in expecting too much from people.
01:09Let us get into the text.
01:10The psalmist is crying out in the text about this very thing.
01:13He says,
01:14My soul, wait thou only upon God, for my expectation is from Him.
01:21He is my rock and my salvation.
01:24He is my defense.
01:26I shall not be moved.
01:29So in this text, David is speaking.
01:32And what we see him doing in this text,
01:35he is preaching to his own soul.
01:38Oh, help us to learn to preach to ourselves.
01:43He is preaching to his own soul before he reacts to people.
01:46He says,
01:47My soul, wait thou.
01:51So you need to wait.
01:52He's taking intentional self-leadership over himself.
01:58And this is important.
02:00We must learn how to take leadership over our own soul.
02:04Your soul will follow a voice.
02:06It will either follow your emotions.
02:09It will either follow your fears.
02:12It will either follow your thoughts.
02:14Or it will follow rejection.
02:17If you don't speak to it.
02:19Or your soul will follow the truth.
02:22Speak to your soul.
02:23Or something else will speak to your soul.
02:27Sometimes you got to get yourself together.
02:28Say, what's going on with you?
02:30Trust out in God.
02:32Soul, what is going on?
02:34Put your faith in God.
02:37That's what David's doing right here.
02:39David doesn't let his frustration speak.
02:41He doesn't let loneliness speak.
02:43He doesn't let rejection speak.
02:45He steps in and says,
02:46Wait.
02:47Only upon God.
02:49You're going through a whole lot right now.
02:51But you are to wait upon God.
02:54Ah, help today God.
02:56Most of our instability that we face
02:58and our frustrations that we face
03:00is because we have mixed dependency as believers.
03:02We trust God and people's approval.
03:07Yeah, I trust God,
03:08but I still want people to approve of me.
03:10Oh, help us today.
03:12We trust God and desired outcomes.
03:16I trust God,
03:17but I need for it to go like this
03:19or I'm frustrated.
03:20Oh, we're not exclusively focused upon God.
03:25The more places you look for validation,
03:28the more unstable you will feel emotionally
03:31because dependency is upon God
03:34and nothing of this world.
03:36This world will disappoint you.
03:38People will disappoint you.
03:40Your circumstances will disappoint you,
03:43but God never will.
03:45David is telling his own soul where to go.
03:48No, he's saying wait only upon God.
03:52That's where you go, soul.
03:53But in so doing,
03:54he's also telling his soul where not to go.
03:57Don't go in your circumstances.
03:58Don't trust those.
04:00Don't put your dependency on people.
04:02You can love people,
04:03but don't depend upon them.
04:06Depend upon God.
04:07God might flow things through people,
04:09but you got to know that it comes from God.
04:11And if God's not flowing through them,
04:13that's because God didn't intend to use that person.
04:15Oh, my source is not people.
04:18God might use people,
04:19but God is our source.
04:24David said,
04:24I'm not going to have divided dependency.
04:27I'm going to have my dependency only upon God,
04:31even if they remain silent.
04:33It doesn't matter
04:34because my expectation is from God.
04:37David said,
04:38my expectations from him,
04:40even if they're silent,
04:41it don't matter.
04:43Even if they reject me,
04:44it don't matter
04:45because they're not my source.
04:46Even if they delay,
04:49it does not shake me,
04:51it does not move me,
04:53and it will not define me
04:54because God was my expectation all the time.
04:58I was looking unto him.
05:00Sometimes when we are hurt,
05:02we must ask ourselves,
05:03were you expecting too much from people?
05:05Were you expecting too much from this life
05:08and circumstances and things?
05:09Ah, Lord, help us.
05:11When expectation is put on people,
05:13we become emotionally dependent upon their behavior.
05:17When they come through,
05:18it's good.
05:19It's all good.
05:20But when they don't come through,
05:23or when circumstances turn not to be in our favor,
05:26then we're emotionally distraught.
05:29The right expectation,
05:31when our expectation is upon God and God alone,
05:35it removes unnecessary emotional weight.
05:40Oh, life is easier
05:42because it's not working so hard,
05:44dealing with the ups and downs of people.
05:46It's steady and focused upon him.
05:49Ah, and he does not vacillate on us.
05:52Praise be unto God.
05:53So David said,
05:55he is my rock.
05:56I shall not be moved.
05:58I shall not be moved.
06:01That meant that go,
06:02I am attacked.
06:03People may still attack me.
06:04They may still reject me.
06:06I might be a bit lonely,
06:08but this will not make me collapse.
06:11I shall not be moved.
06:14If our expectation is upon God,
06:17people still might disappoint us,
06:19but it won't destabilize me.
06:22I'll be okay.
06:23I'll make it.
06:24I'm not destabilized.
06:25I can keep on moving
06:26because I was looking unto God.
06:29David says twice
06:30that to put our faith only in God.
06:32He says in verse five,
06:34my soul wait thou only upon God.
06:37Then in verse six,
06:38he only is my rock.
06:40Only, only, only.
06:42He said it twice
06:43because we have a tendency,
06:45a human tendency to drift.
06:49That's why we need to hear the word.
06:51I can drift back into
06:53what people think about me
06:54and their opinions upon me.
06:56I'm drifting now.
06:57I've taken my eyes solely off of God
06:59as my source.
07:00And I start looking to things.
07:01My soul drifts.
07:03Ah, and when you're hurt really bad,
07:06you have to ask yourself,
07:08has your soul drifted away from God
07:09being your all?
07:11Oh, Lord, help me.
07:12David reinforces God only.
07:16Not people's responses,
07:17not people's opinions,
07:19not people's approval.
07:20God only.
07:22He goes on to say,
07:24he only is my rock
07:26and my salvation
07:27and my defense.
07:30He is my rock.
07:32What's that mean?
07:34He is something that does not move.
07:36Ah, he won't move on me.
07:38People may move on me,
07:39but he will not.
07:40He is a firm foundation.
07:42I can sit back in him
07:43and relax in him.
07:45I don't got to worry about him
07:46moving around.
07:47Ah, firm foundation.
07:50Then David goes on
07:51and says that God is my salvation.
07:53What do we mean by salvation?
07:55He is my deliverance.
07:56If I'm in trouble,
07:58I'm looking to him,
07:59not people,
08:00not places,
08:01not things.
08:02Now, he might use people,
08:03places, things,
08:03but I'm looking unto him
08:04to deliver me.
08:06Oh, if I'm in trouble,
08:07he shall rescue me.
08:09That's what he means by
08:10he's my salvation.
08:11Look at what God is.
08:13He also says
08:14that God is my defense.
08:15What are we talking about?
08:17Meaning that God
08:17will protect me.
08:19People might not protect me.
08:20People might slander my name.
08:22They might talk
08:22all kind of bad about me,
08:23but God will protect me
08:28and he will shield me.
08:30People might not care
08:31for my well-being,
08:32but God does.
08:35Look at what we have in Jesus.
08:38David is saying,
08:39God is my rock.
08:40People will no longer
08:42have an emotional hold
08:44over my life.
08:45They will not carry
08:46emotional authority in my life.
08:49Only God.
08:50There may be pressure in my life.
08:52There may be opposition
08:54in my life.
08:55I may have an emotional awareness
08:57of this pressure
08:57and this opposition.
08:59I may even feel it,
09:01but I shall not fall apart
09:04for God is my rock,
09:06my defense,
09:06and my salvation.
09:07I shall not move.
09:10I shall not be moved.
09:12Oh, Lord.
09:13Thank you, Jesus.
09:15I won't fall apart.
09:16I may see it,
09:17but I will not be shaken.
09:19Help us, Lord,
09:21to not have too much expectations
09:23in people, places, or things,
09:26but to have our expectation
09:27in you and you alone.
09:29In Jesus' name,
09:29we pray and say,
09:30Amen.
09:50Amen.
09:51Amen.
09:52Amen.
09:53Amen.
09:56Amen.
