Beginning with Muhammad Ali Pasha, an Ottoman officer with no hereditary claim to Egypt, the family rose from military power to establish a dynasty that would produce governors, khedives, sultans and kings. Under its rule, Egypt built armies, factories, railways and palaces, expanded across the Middle East and Africa, and became home to one of the world’s most important waterways: the Suez Canal.
But ambition came at an extraordinary price.
Muhammad Ali came close to building an empire powerful enough to threaten the Ottoman Sultan himself, only for Europe to intervene and force Egypt back. His grandson Ismail transformed Cairo into a dazzling capital designed to rival Europe — while foreign loans and mounting debt gradually gave European powers increasing control over the country.
By the twentieth century, the dynasty possessed a crown but increasingly struggled to control the nation beneath it. British occupation, nationalist revolt, political rivalry and royal excess weakened the monarchy from every direction. For the young King Farouk, once welcomed as the symbol of a new Egypt, the final humiliation came as British tanks surrounded his palace and later a generation of Egyptian officers concluded that the entire system had failed.
In July 1952, the dynasty’s extraordinary rise ended almost as dramatically as it had begun. Farouk was forced to abdicate and leave Egypt aboard the royal yacht El Mahrousa, surrendering the throne to his six-month-old son, Fuad II. Less than a year later, the monarchy was abolished altogether.
